Thugs Beat Jewish Group Who Wished Them A "Happy Chanukah"; Student Comes To Their Aid

(CBS/AP)  A suspected bias attack on four Jewish subway riders in New York City has resulted in a friendship between the Jewish victims and the Muslim college student who came to their aid.

Walter Adler is calling Hassan Askari a hero for intervening when Adler and three friends were assaulted on a subway train in lower Manhattan on Friday night.

The altercation erupted when Adler and his friends said "Happy Chanukah" to a group yelling "Merry Christmas" on the Brooklyn-bound train.

Adler told the New York Post that one of his attackers rolled up his sleeve to display a tattoo of Jesus Christ.

"Happy Chanukah. That's when the Jews killed Jesus," the attacker told Adler.

The 20-year-old Askari, who suffered two black eyes, said he tried to fight off the 10 attackers, giving Adler a chance to summon police by pulling an emergency brake.

"I did what I thought was right," said Askari, a student at Berkeley College in Manhattan, who was allegedly punched and beaten. "I did the best that I could to help."

Eight men and two women have pleaded not guilty to assault, menacing and other charges in the case. Prosecutors have said the charges could be upgraded to hate crimes.

The Post said two of the suspects had been charged with hate crimes in the past.

"That a random Muslim kid helped some Jewish kids, that's what's positive about New York," said Adler, 23, who suffered a broken nose and a lip wound.

Dutch lawmaker planning film criticizing the Quran
A Dutch conservative lawmaker said Wednesday he is making a film to highlight what he describes as "fascist" passages in the Quran, his latest high profile criticism of Islam.
Wilders plans to depict parts of the Quran he says are used as inspiration "by bad people to do bad things."
Less than 10 minutes long, the film is expected to air in late January. It will show "the intolerant and fascist character of the Quran," said Wilders, whose anti-Islam campaign helped his Freedom Party win nine seats in parliament in last year''s election.
In the past, Wilders has said that half the Quran should be torn up and compared it with Adolf Hitler''s book "Mein Kampf." He has claimed the Netherlands is being swamped by a "tsunami" of Islamic immigrants.

The jewish kid''s positive comment about the muslim kid stepping up to help him, is what America used to be--a melting pot; not now. The US is turning into an intolerant, hate-filled place with the most obnoxious of religious excess riding shotgun with the worst sort of nationalistic right-wing divisionalist sentiments. As a youth studying history, I simply could not believe that the German people would have stood idly by and watched Hitler''s right-wing nationalism take over Germany, and I believed that the German people as a group actively approved of the horrible and hatefilled actions of its government. Today, I think I understand better how right-wing nationalism took over Germany: you need economic duress and someone different than you to blame it on, with a war and a contant drumbeat of fear to justify eliminating civil rights, and a people cowed into inaction for fear of not being patriotic to the homeland and who stand quietly by watching it happen, and tut-tutting the actions of tatooed brownshirts mindlessly attacking those who aren''t them.
