(CBS/AP)  A suspected bias attack on four Jewish subway riders in New York City has resulted in a friendship between the Jewish victims and the Muslim college student who came to their aid.

Walter Adler is calling Hassan Askari a hero for intervening when Adler and three friends were assaulted on a subway train in lower Manhattan on Friday night.

The altercation erupted when Adler and his friends said "Happy Chanukah" to a group yelling "Merry Christmas" on the Brooklyn-bound train.

Adler told the New York Post that one of his attackers rolled up his sleeve to display a tattoo of Jesus Christ.

"Happy Chanukah. That's when the Jews killed Jesus," the attacker told Adler.

The 20-year-old Askari, who suffered two black eyes, said he tried to fight off the 10 attackers, giving Adler a chance to summon police by pulling an emergency brake.

"I did what I thought was right," said Askari, a student at Berkeley College in Manhattan, who was allegedly punched and beaten. "I did the best that I could to help."

Eight men and two women have pleaded not guilty to assault, menacing and other charges in the case. Prosecutors have said the charges could be upgraded to hate crimes.

The Post said two of the suspects had been charged with hate crimes in the past.

"That a random Muslim kid helped some Jewish kids, that's what's positive about New York," said Adler, 23, who suffered a broken nose and a lip wound.

You didn''t qualify your statement, Are you a Jew hater or a christian hater, You just couldn''t let it be, could you, You defiled a good thing with a statement that prompts more bad feelings. Just so you know, I am a Christian that hates nobody, just some of their actions.

People better wake up to the bullying going on in the U.S. by the Christian crazies. They are feebleminded but unfortunately quite mobile and loud. The megachurches are filled with megamorons. Put them in brown shirts and you have the makings of a group that will make the Nazis look like amateurs. The Christians weren''t yelling "Merry Christmas" in a real way, it was done to bother the Jews. The Muslim student is a brave person. Every Muslim student I''ve ever met has been intelligent and courageous. The ones who wanted to stay in the U.S. in the 70''s and 80''s were summarily pushed back to Iraq and Iran.

How small minded could this article be?

Next time a person (who happens to be Christian) does something news-worthy, will it read "Christian does so-and-so"? How would the editor/writer describe the Civil War: "Christians fight Christians to help free enslaved Christians and others"? How about the Arab/Israeli conflict: "Christians help Jews fight Arabs/Muslims"

CBS...why don''t you realize that evil and hatred, as well as goodness reside in PEOPLE not in demographics. SHAME ON YOU.

Apparently, the dude with the Jesus tattoo missed the whole point of the crucifixion. Yes, the Jews at the time were involved, but that''s simply because of the region where it took place. Jews were there. Big deal. If the crucifixion happened in Mexico, the Mexicans would naturally have been implicated. It doesn''t matter who did it, what matters is that it was SUPPOSED to happen the way that it did. It was for the benefit of us all. It was part of God''s plan. Holding Jews responsible for killing Jesus completely misses the whole point.

That guy with the tattoos wasn''t a Christian - he was an assshole.

At least two people here actually believe a Jesus tatoo is what makes a Christian, a Christian. Hmmmm. So, if I tatoo United States of America on my arm, would that make me an American? Why didn''t anyone make a point about the attackers gender, or his race?
I suppose if you already hated Christians, you wouldn''t need anything more to go on. A real Christian wouldn''t even make a statement about the Jews killing Jesus, since it was ultimately God the Father who put his Son to death. If there was a contest to see who was the dumbest, then why wouldn''t Christians hate all Italians, too? Since, it was the Romans who executed Jesus, too. Duhhh.

Ha! So ONE Muslim actually does something kind, courageous & selfless for a Jew and all you liberals are nodding your heads like you were right about your Muslim allies all along.... and of course, the requisite bashing of Christians is not to far behind... Puh-LEASE. The reality is that most Christians would be appalled at so-called Christians beating up Jews in the name of Christ while most Muslims would be appalled at a so-called Muslim helping out any Jew... What you''re seening is is TWO examples of ''believers'' acting outside the norm of their faith. Funny how liberals don''t say squat when Muslims blow up a bunch of innocent people in Algeria - except of course for you liberal conspiracy theorists blaming Bush & the CIA while chanting oil, oil, oil...

I take my hat OFF to this Muslim kid though - but for his own safety from other Muslims - I suggest he lay low for a while.... otherwise we''ll be hearing about another honor killing before too long..

"Too bad that antijewish/antimuslim/antiarab bias is raging in the popular Christian community these days."

Only a liberal could, with a straight face, complain about stereotyping while stereotyping in the very same breath... besides, since WHEN to liberals support Israel? Liberals have allied themselves with the enemies of Israel (and the United States for that matter) in a joint effort to oust George Bush - that much is patently obvious....

Liberals - traitors to their country, enemies of Christ

matter77,

Even further, since Jesus and all his deciples were Jews it makes some sense to view Christianity as a sect of Judaism.

For an enlightening read on the origins and long long sad history of antisemitism read "Constantines Sword" by James Carroll.

Oh for god''s sake it''s ONE Muslim person vs. thousands and thousands of hate mongering, death chanting, extremists blowing each other up and attacking the WTC. Yeah, that''s all balanced now.

Let me go find one story of a German person befriending a Jew and then all is forgiven for the Holocaust I guess too? Give me a break.

The Nazis were Christians and the Holocaust was a Christian attrocity. And not the first. Almost every Crusade was accompanied by slaughters of European Jews. When the Crusaders took Jerusalem on one occasion they herded all the Jews into the Temple and burned it to the ground.

You need to acknowledge where you come from if you wish to do better.

Wonderful. A man who wears a tattoo of Jesus Christ, and he thinks Chanukah has something to do with the Crucifixion. Isn''t it heartening to know how well-educated about their own faith Christians are? I know many non-Christians, including Jews and atheists, who are considerably better informed on the subject.

I guess I didn''t talk slooowwwwwly enough in my last post. I''m talking about a) the 21st Century and b) there were PLENTY of German sympathizers when it came to the Jews; helping them, hiding them BACK THEN. Nope, bad example and completely not getting my analogy.

There are many potential heros, of all faiths, who would have come to the aid of innocent people being bashed on a subway. In this moment of time, a young Moslem student helped some Jews. In New York City where we were attacked on 9/11 by fanatics and in a world where there has been 60 years of suffering due to the violence and heightened anger over the Israeli and Palestine conflict - the fact that this young Moslem man would stand up and fight for some Jews just because they were human beings, is very encouraging and is a positive statement about the multicultural city where we live. We all celebrate these moments when the common humanity and respect for life we share overcomes the evil and cruelty of racial and religious prejudice.

It looks like the liberals that post here, as well as liberal CBS News, think that just because some guy has a Jesus tattoo that he is a Christian. I''m not surprised, just amused.

Wearing a tatoo of Jesus is no sign of faith. Helping a person in need (no matter who) ia sign of love that must be had to have faith in Jesus.

Having a Jesus tattoo doesn''t make one a Christian any more than performing oral sodomy on someone of the same gender, hating Christians, disbelieving the existence of God, raising our taxes, and atending "die-ins" (where full grown adults play "dead") makes one a liberal Democrat.

Wait - that may not have been a good comparison.

It doesn''t STATE that the attacker was a Christian, but it IMPLIES such (the Michael Moore technique of reporting). Obviously, a tattoo doesn''t make someone a Christian, but that doesn''t matter. CBS''s intent was to demonstrate MUSLIM=GOOD, JEWISH=GOOD, CHRISTIAN=BAAAAAD. And they''ve done a good job. Look at some of the anti-Christian posts here.

A lot of ''skinhead nazis'' also wear similar tattoos, and the KKK does too.

Some people just don''t know their own faith, I guess. That''s why there are "Muslim" terrorists, "Christian" skinheads, and "Jewish" leaders/criminals. They aren''t what they call themselves. I''m so glad that in a city where fanatics who called themselves Muslims attacked the USA, a Muslim student stood up for Jewish fellow human beings.
What people need to realize, no matter what faith you are, when you kill or hurt in the name of God, all you are doing is truly cursing God.

Has anybody here considered, just for a moment, the possibility that this is New York City and asssholes are everywhere? If this story didn''t have religious implications, it would have never appeared here.

And pleeeze, stop equating a Jesus tattoo with Christians. My girlfriend has a tattoo of a dog on her asss, but that doesn''t mean that she''s been plugged by a dog. At least not that I''m aware of.
