Photo Essay John McCain Some call him a hero, some a maverick. Will Americans call him Mr. President?
"As president, I'll propose a national energy strategy that will amount to a declaration of independence from the fear bred by our reliance on oil sheiks and our vulnerability to the troubled politics of the lands they rule," McCain said in remarks prepared for delivery at the Center for Hydrogen Research in this early voting state. "The strategy I propose won't be another grab bag of handouts to this or that industry and a full employment act for lobbyists. It will rely on the genius and technological prowess of American industry and science."
The Arizona senator said in the remarks that more nuclear power had been stymied by politics.
"We've let the fears of 30 years ago, and an endless political squabble over the storage of nuclear spent fuel make it virtually impossible to build a single new plant that produces a form of energy that is safe and non-polluting," McCain said. "We can also find ways to use new sources of power like hydrogen. My energy policies will rely on setting good incentives for firms, entrepreneurs, and households."
At a North Augusta restaurant, McCain stressed his foreign policy credentials during an address to hundreds of people.
"If we fail in Iraq, they will follow us home," he said of radical Muslims.
McCain said Mike Huckabee's recent surge in the polls showed that debates matter, but did not elaborate.
"I think that my national security experience and background qualify me to be commander in chief," he said.
McCain also said that Sen. Joe Biden's call for a special counsel to investigate why CIA destroyed tapes of terror suspects under interrogation was "a partisan measure."
The Justice Department and the CIA's internal watchdog are conducting a joint inquiry to determine whether a full investigation is warranted.
McCain said the U.S. attorney general should investigate.

- GiantRobot2--Then why did he raise taxes in Arkansas? What is he going to do about the open borders?--Nothing! My plants need carbon dioxide! Why does he want to starve them? And--they make oxygen for me! Global warming is a globalist scam for a carbon tax. The current weather patterns reflect changes unrelated to man''s activity on earth--they used to grow wheat in GREENland...
His ''fair tax'' is going to rest on the backs of working Americans while the super rich escape virtually unscathed. The only ''fair tax'' is a single tax on gross incomes--that takes the politics out of taxation.
What will he do about the FED? This albatross around America''s neck, owned and operated by private international bankers who suck the life out of out country, needs to be utterly and ruthlessly destroyed root, branch and open window. - Reply to this comment
- What a novel idea...reduce our dependence on foreign oil...why hasn''t anyone ever thought of that before?--They''ve been saying it since the early 1970s and before...but, Americans keep electing Rockefellar Republicans and Democrats who are beholden to the international interests that profit from Middle Eastern oil and the use of the dollar as an international unit of commerce and debt. And! if the polls are any indication of America''s ''thinking'' in Iowa...they are going to keep the same interests at the helm in Washington...Idiots!

Thank you for your words. It really makes me angry when I hear idiots like Bush try to blame the restrictions on drilling in ANWR on environmentalists. Most environmentalists would be willing, as good Americans, to allow safe drilling there, but the oil companies insist on having the right to sell American oil overseas and not =keeping it home. If we''re going to be asked to take a chance with environmental damage in one of our states, then it only seems reasonable to me that we be allowed to keep OUR oil here for our use, instead of allowing the oil companies to sell it for no one''s benefit except their own and the politicians they''ve bought. I am an environmentalist, but if I thought it would actually reduce our dependence on foreign oil so we wouldn''t have to fight Bush''s made up wars in the Middle-East, then I''d support drilling in ANWR. IF they oil stayed here! - Reply to this comment

Excellent post! With Bush in their backpockets the big oil companies have been calling the shots all along. We all know this is true. I may be wrong about this but the timber industry is doing the same thing with lumber. Also, I was just on the Vick site and our boy Donnie is in rare form tonight. That guy is certifiable isn''t he. You never know what he''s gonna say next. Can you imagine trying to carry on a convesation with him in person? That would be really interesting. I also wanted to say how much I appreciate you and RowdyTexan. You guys are great posters and I truly enjoy reading your stuff. Thank you...see you later. - Reply to this comment

- The bulk of the oil we pump out of our own reserves in Alaska is sold by the big oil companies to China for a bigger profit then they could get refining it in the US. The main reason the big oil companies have been refused the right to drill in ANWR is not because of the environmentalists, but because they refuse to accept the restriction that the oil be used only for Americans, instead of being sold in Asia. We would be much less dependant on foreign oil if we stopped allowing American oil companies to sell American oil to foreign nations instead of requiring them to process and sell OUR oil here!

Since the other candidates don''''t have anything to say on what they can do for America, they take the easy road and resort to taking cheap shots at Mike. Don%u2019t fall into their trap any longer with negative attacks, let''''s show the critics and the naysayers that Americans have pride and we are ready to elect an honest, humble, trustworthy man for US President. - Reply to this comment
- I will agree with ANY candidate who wants to go "self reliant" for our energy needs from ANY of our own sources as fast as we can do it. It is a pure and unbiased AMERICAN issue, not a party issue. We already have far more efficient inventions for all available power generation methods. I think it CRIMINAL that some corporations have bottled and shelved away these "GREENER" inventions from being used. I say we should confiscate these unused inventions and implement them immediately. Throw out the red tape of junk science while your at it too!

- "The Justice Department and the CIA''s internal watchdog are conducting a joint inquiry to determine whether a full investigation is warranted."
But both of these entities have already proven that they can''t be trusted! And so has the republican party! It needs to be a party issue if that''s the only way to get the truth out of these people. - Reply to this comment
