(CBS)  Actress Jennifer Love Hewitt is getting a lot of grief for some recent paparazzi photos showing her in a bikini while on vacation with her fiancé.

Some bloggers say she looks overweight and has too much cellulite -- particularly in shots showing her from the rear. One wrote, "She needs to do some jogging. Badly."

E! News Now host Ashlan Gorse says, "People just of course wanted to scrutinize her because she is famous and wanted to call her out on it and called her fat, which wasn't fair."

Love Hewitt, who stars in the CBS drama "Ghost Whisperer," is a size two. And she isn't taking the criticism sitting down.

She's done something rather unusual for a star under the cellulite spotlight. She's spoken up.

Pacific Coast News found her browsing in a bookstore and she looked directly into the camera, saying, "People should be proud of who they are and what they look like, and not let all this silliness and judgment sort of get in the way."

On her Web site, Hewitt says, "I've sat by in silence for a long time now about the way women's bodies are constantly scrutinized. To set the record straight, I'm not upset for me, but for all of the girls out there that are struggling with their body image.

"A size two is not fat! Nor will it ever be. And being a size zero doesn't make you beautiful.

"What I should be doing is celebrating some of the best days of my life and my engagement to the man of my dreams, instead of having to deal with photographers taking invasive pictures from bad angles. I know what I look like, and so do my friends and family. And like all women out there should, I love my body.

"To all girls with butts, boobs, hips and a waist, put on a bikini -- put it on and stay strong."

Author, columnist and self-esteem expert Jessica Weiner told Early Show co-anchor Hannah Storm the putdowns of Love Hewitt are "mortifying, actually, and we need a reality check. She's not fat, she never will be fat at that size, and we have a really skewed sense of beauty in this country. It might be one thing to say, 'Oh, well, it's just relegated to celebrity criticism,' but when we criticize a body like that and we criticize a woman like that, we criticize our own daughters like that.

"Cellulite does not always equal being overweight. It's a genetic thing. We have to keep it in perspective. I work with girls all the time who are saying, 'If they're calling her fat, what are they gonna say about me?' "

"The problem with our daughters," Storm observed, "is that they have a real hard time distinguishing this. If people are calling Jennifer Love Hewitt fat, our daughters assume those people are right. rather than wrong."

"Exactly," agreed Weiner, who wrote, "Life Doesn't Begin Five Pounds From Now." "We have a bombardment of images for our daughters, as we all know. They see hundreds of messages a day that tell them what to eat, what to wear, what to weight, and right now I'm working with girl ... one who is 17 and considering plastic surgery that we're coaching her on. And she's looking at this saying, 'Maybe I should get liposuction, too.' "

"It's really important that moms use this as a teachable moment. They should take our conversation that we're having and bring it home to their daughters, and talk about what they see -- get a Hollywood reality check. What you see out there is airbrushed and retouched, and when you see a photo like this, and it has a cruel intention behind it, use it to talk to your daughter about how to love and appreciate her body right now. Moms have to talk about it. If they want some more tools, they can go to campaignforrealbeauty.com and get involved in the conversation with their daughters."

"And never," Storm stressed, "say to your daughter, 'Does this make me look fat?' Or, 'I feel fat today?' "

"Right," Weiner concurred. "They have to walk their talk."

What most upsets me about skinny minnies is that their figures are more like a 10 or 12 year old child''s figure. Isn''t that borderline sick! And what we need most is a designer who will design clothes for the fuller figured woman that looks good. You cannot find these kinds of clothes anywhere any more. It''s like the designers are too afraid to try to make clothes for women. It is alot easier to design clothes for the skinny minnies.

talking about "skinny minnies" having the body of a child is every bit as offensive as criticizing a woman for having curves. If we''re going to ask people to stop criticizing peoples weight let''s not allow a double standard. "don''t criticize peoples'' weight unless it''s because they don''t way enough." A small frame is every bit as womanly as a "fuller figured" one. It''s time to accept that there are a wide range of acceptable sizes and shapes that are beautiful for a woman''s body and quit the war between fats and skinnies.

Jennifer is so right women should be proud of there bodies. She is absolutly correct women shouldnt be catigorizing the "fats" and the "skinnies" because you yourself are creating animosity. What differentiates someone who is skinny from fat and someone with a very slim figure to a fuller figure? Jennifer love hewitt is a size two with boobs and tush, shes no where near fat but is she considered a fatty because she has that? No! She is thin with curves so this stupid skinnie minnie name and the fatty word needs to get lost. Women complain that there so tired of the messages that are being sent out there, well stop critisizing eachother for who is to thin and who''s got a little extra meat on there bones. Once people start realizing that no two women have the same figure then maybe people will stop being so ignorant. I would also like to say this to "todayswom" who are you to judge a women who has a slim figure? where do you get off stating that they have the body of a 10 or 12 year old child? That is an ignorant thing to say, and just because some women have very thin figures that by no means makes them borderline sick! And i dont know where your shopping but theres plenty of clothes out there for chicks with curves.

You go girl. Finally someone sticks up for the beauty of a womans body. I do not consider myself fat and neither does anyone that knows me. I a full figured and I have alot of friends because I am a good person. It doesn''t matter what you look like, it''s who you are and who you decide to be. It took me years to be comfortable with myself, but i made it through and know I am still overweight, but I can almost outrun my husband in a race. Moral to the story: Always love yourself and remember, it''s not what people call you, it''s what you answer to. Have a great day ladies!

Trashing celebs for any number of things isn''t going to stop until the public stops buying the magazines etc. I think a lot of women like to see these "fat" pictures, it makes them feel normal and a lot less inadequate. I know celebs have feelings too and it''s no more acceptable to be mean to them as to anyone else, but they are lving a double standard themselves. They are getting the high paying gigs because of how they look. Hollywood has a different standard than the rest of the world and when you go into this you have to know that one mere pound and one mere year older could be enough to knock you off the top. You have to be strong and feel good about your self. If Jennifer felt happy about how she really looks right now (bad photo or not) then she wouldn''t be so angry. I think she is pissed because "they" caught her in a non perfect phase - maybe temporary, may not be, she isn''t 21 anymore. I still think she is super hot, super classy and a very talented actress and I should be so fat on a very good day. But If you don''t want to be caught photographed in all your non perfect glory, then don''t got to the photo hot spots, in a bikini no less. If you want to stay on top, then you need to keep yourself up. If it was just a bad photo, then who cares? Next week she will be photographed looking stunning.

If she has cellulite, that makes her all the more LOVEABLE in my mind! If she puts on 20 more pounds even, that''s fine too! Anyone can take an unflattering picture...My sister is beautiful, but taken at a wrong angle, her nose looks bigger than it really is. -So FU*KING WHAT!

Let''s get real. She is FAT and UNHEALTHY. Her figure shows she has not exercised enough. That''s not a figure of someone who works regularly and eat a healthy diet.

Jennifer, you look fantastic. Remember, girls, those of you that even remotely think she is fat, some of these pictures are angled, emphasized, manipulated to plug the story they want to get out. Just as they beautify pictures, editors can also make them as unflattering as they want. Jennifer, you look hot, even when they TRY to put you in an unflattering light.:)

I was a model years ago and my weight played a big part in my life. I think Jennifer is absolutely beautiful! I am very critical of women and how I rate them, ( I don''t know why ) but she rates a 10 in my book of beauty. I also think she is beautiful inside as it shows in her demeanor. Jennifer appears to be a very secure person and she should be applauded for speaking out! Donna James

Slack? She''s getting a lot of slack? Who is writing this thing? If we can beyond the lack of language skills here for a moment, Jennifer is truly beautiful and a real jewel among the phony, underfed and over-hyped skinny broads that get so much attention. When I see those girls I just want to buy them a cheeseburger and a shake!

UGGGH! "Getting a lot of slack" - thank goodness someone other than I noticed this ignorance. How can someone call themselves a writer and not even bother to find out the meaning of terms before publishing them? It is SO easy to look things up if you aren''t smart enough to already know it. Then no one will ever no that you didn''t!

The correct term for the intended meaning here is "getting a lot of flak (or flack)" meaning to receive criticism. It is a figurative term refering to being shot at by artillery. If someone were "getting a lot of slack" that would mean they were being given a break, someone was going easy on them, as in "C''mon, give me some slack!" This is a figurative expression referring to not holding something tight, but letting it be a little looser (like slack in a rope.)

No wonder CBS news ratings are in the tank. Language skills leave something to be desired. Its flak (yes CBS, that is spelled correctly, look it up or Google it) not slack ...........

No wonder CBS news ratings are in the tank. Their language skills leave some to be desired. It''s "flak" (yes, that is spelled correctly. Look it up or Google it.) not "slack". When you want to give someone a hard time it''s "Giving them flak". When you want to be kind to them on an issue it''s "Cutting them some slack".

As for Jennifer, I have seen her in person just a couple of weeks ago and she looks great. It makes me wonder if some of those photos are doctored.

To Jennifer: Tell them to bug off .......

. . . and while I''m at it:

When you want to try a different way of managing a problem, you might suggest "taking a different tack." (not tact.)
If something is still in one piece it is intact. Not in tack.

If you are surprised at something you might be "taken aback" (not taken back)

If you are spontaneously expressing thoughts as they occur to you and want to point this out, you say "I''m just thinking out loud" (not "I''m just talking out loud" - duh, we hear you)

Quotation marks are not an appropriate way to emphasise a word - they indicate something someone said (a quotation!) or something that is not in actuality what you are calling it. (The "perfect" person told us all how to correct our speech and writing.) If you want to merely emphasise a word, use italics, bold, underline or larger or different font. (PLEASE listen.)

And APOSTROPHES are to indicate possesive form - not plural! Just because the word ends with an S does not mean it needs an apostrophe!

STICKLERS UNITE!

I am delighted to hear that Jennifer Love Hewitt is fighting back. I have grown weary of seeing the front pages of virtually every magazine littered with picture perfect waifs smiling that hollow-cheeked smile. It is time to send a message that we have had our fill of skeletons. I will take a fit and healthy body any day!

Jennifer Love Hewitt is an actress, she is not a model. We in this country are so obsessed with being perfect when in fact we will always have flaws. Jennifer is one of those celebrities who have "it". Some of the others who have that trait are Olivia Newton-John or Carly Simon. People who criticize JLH also call Sarah Jessica Parker unsexy, I think they probably need new glasses among other things.

A size 2 is a great size and you my dear are at least a size 5 or 6 and you need to drop at least 25 pounds to be a size 2, unless like you are dreaming, which you are doing right now. Having said that, true you are not a model so who cares how you look, but saying you are a 2 is a big fat lie.

You can''t go by that one picture. Looking at other pictures of her at events and such, she certainly can be a size 2, she''s pretty thin waist-wise. The infamous picture itself is a bit misleading because she''s only 5 foot 2 so any feature on her is exaggerated to begin with.

They say that the average woman is a size 12/14 - I''m a size 8 - sometimes a 6 and when I''m a 6 a few think I''m too skinny -- so there''s JLH who''s a size 2 and paparrazzi and other fools are saying she''s ''fat''???

No wonder so many teens have eating disorders - they''re trying to look like Paris Hilton who''s probably a size double-0.

The fact is that most men like a woman who looks like a woman and not a little girl - and I worry about the men that go after size double-0 - deep down do they like little kids??

Jennifer is not fat. A size 2 fat?? Not, but look at the folks on tv making these comments. Who set them up to comment?? And why would anyone think they are right?? I agree with Jennifer, size 0 doesn''t make you beautiful. Just look at the gals who seem so proud of being skinny. Let''s face it, those at that size are in the minority. The average size for the american woman is 12-14.
