Basic training to learn all about America's fighting force.

(CBS/AP)  The Pentagon announced Monday that five Army National Guard units have been alerted that they are going to serve in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The units include some 8,000 troops going to the Iraq war and 7,000 to Afghanistan, all as replacement units to deploy in the summer of 2009.

They are being alerted now to give them the most time possible to complete the training they'll need for their missions and to allow "a greater measure of predictability for family members and flexibility for" their civilian employers, the department said in a statement.

The units for Iraq will be assigned a security force mission including base defense and route security in Iraq and Kuwait. They are:

-The 32nd Brigade Combat Team from Wisconsin. Part of the unit had also been mobilized in 2005 for duty in Iraq.

-The 41st Brigade Combat Team from Oregon. About a third of the unit has already served in Afghanistan.

-The 155th Brigade Combat Team from Mississippi, which has already served in Iraq.

Those going to Afghanistan are:

-The 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team from Georgia, which already has served in Iraq. It will concentrate on training Afghan National Security Forces.

-The 53rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team from Florida, which left for its first tour in Afghanistan in mid-2006. It is to assume battle space in Afghanistan, where it will perform a full range of operations, the Pentagon said.

While active-duty soldiers and smaller Guard units and members have returned to Iraq for multiple tours, the Guard now is trying to send entire brigades back together to the battlefront on grounds they work more effectively as teams. Brigades generally have about 3,500 troops. Because people come and go from units, it's not possible to immediately determine how many of the people being sent will be going for repeat tours.

Right now Guard members account for roughly a fifth of the Army in Iraq and Afghanistan - dramatically lower than levels during part of 2005, when the Guard soldiers made up about 50 percent of the force in Iraq.

Under a Pentagon policy announced this year, Guard members will serve on active duty for a year.

The announcement affects about 15,000 soldiers, and is part of the regular rotation of forces, according to the Army Times.

The administrations interest in Iran & nukes is more of a smoke screen for their real agenda. Their true interests are in Cheney''''s energy policy. The Caspian oil pipeline will be cheaper to construct if they can go through Iran. This pipeline was the reason for the invasion of Afghanistan. The Caspian sea area holds a third of the worlds oil,and south asian markets are the target for their oil trade.Cheney''s energy policy is at the root of all these middleast wars, the court sealed all documents associated with it, and the national media are not allowed to discuss it. That''s the real deal and this should be a cause for the concern of both parties.
More troops are needed in Afghanistan to protect the contractors building the Caspian sea pipeline. Iran is a target of Cheney, because it would be cheaper to pass through part of Iran with the pipeline than the current plan. Eventually the line goes through Pakistan,to India and Nepal. Remember China warned the US not to interfere with their direct oil buying contracts signed with Iran a few months ago. China said that their would be dire consequences if the US interfered. China is quietly building up there war machine and everyone should be concerned.

Soldiers of the Guard! Before you go on this mission, understand who was responsible for the ''attack on America'' of September 11, 2001...

The former president of Italy, Mr. Cossiga, states that the Mossad and the CIA ran the attacks on the World Trade Centers and the Pentagon. KNOW YOUR ENEMY!!

Are the Republicans listening to us we said out and they keep sending more troops to Iraq.

Well, GOP you had your chance and now I don''t think it will matter what you do. There will be a blood bath in 2008 for the GOP and I don''t want to hear any crying because if I do I think along with me many Americans are going to lose it.

Stupidest comment on the board. Our National Guard was created to protect our borders. Not to be exploited by this fascist regime and sent overseas to be killed in an illegal, immoral, financially motivated invasion built on lies.

Keep your eyes open folks. It is just one more step after cutting funding for homeland security that puts our own soil at even greater risk.

And by the way hillaryin08, the vast majority of US citizens DO NOT support the so called "War On Terror."

God bless our men and women wearing the uniform. They absolutely did not volunteer to give their lives for this.

I, and many others enlisted because I was young, naive, & patriotic. I believed it was a noble and courageous duty to serve my country.

It is with extreme sorrow and disappointment that I report that in this "war," the lives that have been lost are for nothing noble.

Terrorism worldwide is at an all time high. But that''s the idea. It creates a great distraction which enables this administration to continue justifying its'' actions.

More reason for a blue and white Wave to crush the red threat in 08 let us stop the republican pimping our troops while lining their pockets as war profiteers

We need to know why the President of the United States just recently publicly explained a threat of Iran WMD and WW III to the American People when he has known for some time that the Iranians had stopped their program several years ago. Why did this happen, why is America being told to fear bogus threats. The impact on our country our pocketbook by this reckless outrageous behavior that gave rise to speculation on oil has clearly impacted the price of oil and just in time for winter in our State. This has got to be dealt with, what can be done, what should be done these acts appear to be acts against the America People and our direct interest.

Write and call your elected Representatives do not let the red subversive be the only ones speaking up and out on this betrayal

Thank you Liberals for giving the enemy confidence to under estimate the American Soldier and Marine. Because of you, the enemy came from all over the world to fight us by the thousands in a two front war they could not sustain. And they died by the thousands too. We didnt have to go find them because they came to us. If you havent been paying attention, there is a troop surge now going on in Afghanistan for the knock out blow. All because of you liberal, all because of you......America will remember whos side you were on in 08.

"Surely that 1959 *** won''''t pass...

Posted by jh6379 at 10:17 AM : Dec 04, 2007"

When I was a kid, I couldn''t imagine America becoming a Fascist State in my lifetime. My but times have changed and I have learned differently!

The law will pass eventually in some form because the government needs to criminalize any opposition to its power. The totalitarian state marches forward and it needs to protect itself from the People.

But it is interesting to note how our "leaders" plan to define us as terrorists. Terrorism will be the "planned use of force to promote a political or social belief."

If you think about it, the government is engaging in the "planned use of force to promote a political or social belief" of their own, aren''t they? Yes, their true colors are revealed by their own definition--we live in a terrorist state. That''s not my opinion, I am merely judging by the government''s own stated standard!

People used to laugh and say it can''t happen here. They won''t be laughing in the uncomfortably near future. When people extol the virtue of supporting the troops, the president, the government, etc., I no longer wonder what they are thinking. I wonder why they aren''t thinking.

Hang in their George, The real Americans that love America are behind you. You forced the enemy to fight a two fron war they could not sustain. And you did it right under the Democrats noses. America will remember the liberals taking sides with the enemy in 08

Guess who''''s back????

Don%u2019t ever say the Bush administration doesn%u2019t take care of its own. Nearly three years after Paul Wolfowitz resigned as deputy Defense secretary and six months after his stormy departure as president of the World Bank%u2014amid allegations that he improperly awarded a raise to his girlfriend%u2014he%u2019s in line to return to public service.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has offered Wolfowitz, a prime architect of the Iraq War, a position as chairman of the International Security Advisory Board, a prestigious State Department panel, according to two department sources who declined to be identified discussing personnel matters. The 18-member panel, which has access to highly classified intelligence, advises Rice on disarmament, nuclear proliferation, WMD issues and other matters. %u201CWe think he is well suited and will do an excellent job,%u201D said one senior official.
