Confident Clinton Takes Aim At Attackers

By
Katie Couric
(CBS)  With the Iowa caucus just more than a month away, CBS News anchor Katie Couric sat down for an exclusive interview with Democratic frontrunner Sen. Hillary Clinton.

She's the woman on everyone's mind right now. But polls in Iowa are showing the race could shape up to be very close. Couric asked Clinton if she's lowering her expectations as the primary approaches.

"I never raised them, you know when I got into race at the beginning of the year. I wasn't even in double-digits. I was so far behind in Iowa, it was embarrassing," Clinton said.

Her campaign instead is "encouraged" she said, because "we're making progress - but I take nothing for granted, this is going to be a tight race."

"I think everybody should just take a deep breath and say 'let's just go to the finish line,' which will be probably be midnight West Coast time on Feb. 5," she said.

Couric asked Clinton: "Many of Barack Obama's supporters were urging him to be more aggressive and to fight back a little more when it came to your candidacy. It seems as if in recent days you've returned the favor; you've taken off the gloves a bit. And some people are interpreting that as your campaign being pretty nervous..."

"That's not the case at all. Campaigns have rhythm. And we're now down to end. We're going to have a mad dash to Iowa caucuses, turn around and have a mad dash to New Hampshire and then keep going," she said.

Has the Clinton campaign gotten more aggressive?

"It's time. I have absorbed a lot of attacks for several months now - my opponents have basically had a free rein," she said. "After you've been attacked as often as I have from several of my opponents, you can't just absorb it, you have to respond.

"But a lot of the attacks have been quite persistent, shall we say," she said. "Hardly a day goes by when I'm not attacked."

Clinton said she wants voters to know how her plans - particularly health care - stack up against those of other candidates.

"I figure it's about time now for me to draw contrasts, which I think are pretty important to voters," she said. "And that's what I'm going to do."

She distinguished Obama's plan from those of her Democratic opponents.

"All of us except Sen. Obama have universal health care ..." Clinton said. "I want people to know that."

It was announced Monday that Oprah Winfrey would be campaigning with Obama in three key states. "How do you feel about that?" Couric asked.

"I think it's great ... I'm proud to have a lot of very distinguished Americans [supporting me]," Clinton said.

Is she concerned Obama will get a major boost from Winfrey's enthusiastic fan base?

"No," Clinton said. "...at the end of the day, it's among us as candidates. People will make their judgments. I'm proud to have my husband support me. It's wonderful to have someone with his knowledge and experience and incredible ability vouch for me campaign for me."

"If it's not you, how disappointed will you be?" Couric asked.

"Well, it will be me," she said.

But she said she would stand behind any other Democratic nominee, if it came to that. "We're going to have unified party, behind whoever we nominate."

Clearly, she has considered the possibility she won't be the nominee?

"No, I haven't," Clinton said.

we all know that this lady will be the best president we will ever have, she will bring change and experiece to the white house and she will be the best qualify person in the history of america politics to be president. And for me been a young black man i am very excited for her and their is no reason why no one in america should be against her because been a senator in new york she prove that both democrats and republican love her.

hillarybad...You''ve got to be kidding--right? When was the last time she practiced law? She''s a serving U.S. Senator from New York. Why would she keep a law license in Arkansas? This is such a non-issue it''s ludicrous. You''re grasping at straws to justify your prejudice against her. If you don''t like and don''t have any good basis for it, be bold and admit it. If you can''t find something more substantive to pin on Hillary than this, give it up.

oh let''s face it -- neither Hillary or Obama will beat the GOP candidate - even if the candidate were George W. with all his failures and failings.

Mugwump,
People who live in glass houses should not throw stones. Hillary''s CLE suspension is a tad more serious than you suggest. Take a look at that Arkansas Bar Assn. rules regarding failure to comply with the minimum continuing legal education requirements:
http://courts.state.ar.us/opp/cle_rules2.html#Sanctions
To wit:
6.(H) An attorney who has been suspended pursuant to these rules who desires reinstatement shall file a petition for reinstatement (which in appropriate cases may incorporate a request for stay of suspension) with the Secretary of the Board. The petition shall be sworn and properly acknowledged by a notary public or any official authorized to take oaths.

. . .

The petition must contain an affirmation that the petitioner has not engaged in the practice of law subsequent to receipt of notification of suspension or actual knowledge of suspension, whichever is earlier.

. . .

In the event the attorney is reinstated, the Board may set additional educational requirements as a condition of reinstatement and may assess reinstatement fees and late filing fees consistent with its regulations.

But I guess I don''t know what I''m talking about.

Hillary''s record in congress proves that she''s just another rabid gun-banning extremist.
Plus, since she''s a CFR member like Bush and Cheney, don''t expect much to change if she''s "elected"!

Get over it hillarybad- if you knew anything about how state bar associations function, you would realize that attorneys are allowed to let membership lapse by not meeting CLE requirements without ANY PENALTY. Letting your license to practice lapse is not a crime, and she hardly needs to be barred in Arkansas to be a senator for New York. If you don''t like the woman- fine by me, but at lease come up with a real criticism of her record, not some trumped uop BS.

It took me about five minutes to learn that a public record of discipline for Hillary D. Rodham Clinton appears on the Arkansas Bar Assn. web site:
http://courts.state.ar.us/attorneys/attorney_info.cfm?number=0073104
Or go to www.arkbar.org.
Scroll to the Attorney Discipline link.
Click on the Office of the Arkansas Supreme Court Committee on Professional Conduct link.
Click on the Searches link.
Click on the Arkansas Licensed Attorney Search link.
Type Clinton into the last name pane.
Up will pop two familiar names.

As for the one with the first name of Hillary who resides in Chappaqua, it appears she may have been suspended for failing to meet her Continuing Legal Education requirements, as it says "CLESUSPENS".

The Arkansas Bar Assn. Committee/Office on Professional Conduct at 1-800-506-6631 told me CLESUSPENS means an attorney has failed to meet his continuing legal education requirements within the time allotted. That failure results in suspension from the practice of law. So in 2002 she didn''t care enough to keep her legal educational requirements current. Maybe Hillie no longer cares whether she can practice law as now she''s a millionaire. Maybe she was sloppy and careless and therefore didn%u2019t realize she needed to meet the requirements. Whatever the excuse, it%u2019s another ***** in her false front of competence.

Gee, and to think that hard hitting investigative reporter Katie Couric didn''t ask Slick Hillie about this?!
