Illegal Immigrant Is Boy's Guardian Angel

(AP)  A 9-year-old boy looking for help after his mother crashed their van in the southern Arizona desert was rescued by a man entering the U.S. illegally, who stayed with him until help arrived the next day, an official said.

The 45-year-old woman, who eventually died while awaiting help, had been driving on a U.S. Forest Service road in a remote area just north of the Mexican border when she lost control of her van on a curve on Thanksgiving, Santa Cruz County Sheriff Tony Estrada said.

The van vaulted into a canyon and landed 300 feet from the road, he said. The woman, from Rimrock, north of Phoenix, survived the impact but was pinned inside, Estrada said.

Her son, unhurt but disoriented, crawled out to get help and was found about two hours later by Jesus Manuel Cordova, 26, of Magdalena de Kino in the northern Mexican state of Sonora. Unable to pull the mother out, he comforted the boy while they waited for help.

The woman died a short time later.

"He stayed with him, told him that everything was going to be all right," Estrada said.

As temperatures dropped, he gave him a jacket, built a bonfire and stayed with him until about 8 a.m. Friday, when hunters passed by and called authorities, Estrada said. The boy was flown to University Medical Center in Tucson as a precaution but appeared unhurt.

"We suspect that they communicated somehow, but we don't know if he knows Spanish or if the gentleman knew English," Estrada said of the boy.

"For a 9-year-old it has to be completely traumatic, being out there alone with his mother dead," Estrada said. "Fortunately for the kid, (Cordova) was there. That was his angel."

Cordova was taken into custody by Border Patrol agents, who were the first to respond to the call for help. He had been trying to walk into the U.S. when he came across the boy.

The boy and his mother were in the area camping, Estrada said. The woman's husband, the boy's father, had died only two months ago. The names of the woman and her son were not being released until relatives were notified.

Cordova likely saved the boy, Estrada said, and his actions should remind people not to quickly characterize illegal immigrants as criminals.

"They do get demonized for a lot of reasons, and they do a lot of good. Obviously this is one example of what an individual can do," he said.

Who determines the laws? Why are they put into place? What values do they uphold? What merit is there in blindly defending a law that does not speak directly to the uniqueness of a situation?

History shows that Law is not a fixed set of rules, but rather an ever evolving set of opinions and ideas on how things should be governed.

The current border laws uphold the values of equity and justice (following the rules), but what about the more equally important value of compassion? Cordova certainly showed his compassion for a 9 year old boy. Where is our compassion for Cordova?

I think U.S. should provide a Humanitarian visa to this gentleman, since we need more people like him in this country he didn''t do anything wrong. I am not supporting illegal immigration, however in this case this man did saved the life of another human being, and he deserves to make his dream come true and look for a better life here. I hope the government reconsider this and provide a humanitarian visa he deserves.

I totally agree with the comments made about using the American PRIVILEGE of the right to vote. Most people I have talked to say" I don''t vote because it wouldn''t make any difference." The truth is they are too lazy to accept the responsibility of being an American citizen. If you don''t vote, dont complain. I agree, I believe there may be a BIG surprise next November. Frankly if Hillary Clinton, does not get the Dem nomination, I will vote for Ron Paul, even if I have to write him in. I personally believe Hillary will have so much input by the women of this country, there will be major changes. IRAQ, health care, school systems, NAFTA because it has affected family incomes, etc.

I would also try and place Americans into those jobs, but none of them were having it.

.................

With the extremely harsh conditions that is placed on the crop workers, I can easily see why many people, Americans or otherwise, would turn down such work at around $7 an hour!

Now at $15+ an hour, perhaps there would be more Americans willing to work in those conditions for that amount of money... not a lot... but more than now.

However, every American would be paying something along the lines of $10 a pound for bananas, tomatoes, strawberries, apples, just to name a few items. Put simply, Americans would have none of that either!

So we''re stuck in the economic rut we all helped (unintentionally) create.

I support guest worker programs for agriculture/food industries (ie. packing plants, etc.), but I frown upon such programs for industries like construction and the service sector. Hopefully someday there will be a compromise that will benefit the MAJORITY of Americans and immigrants alike... not just the few.

Thanks for answering my question rudy.

TO APATHETIC AMERICANS
Voter disenfranchisement and apathy infects the heart of our Republic. Get off your couch, put your remote control down, and become active in your nation''s political process. The pathetically few people that do vote in this country, a.k.a., "the ruling class", who currently get to decide under what kind of conditions (and Laws) you and your family will live, are certainly involved. I can assure you of that. In fact, the ruling class would be much happier if you would just continue to stay home and watch TV in your pleasantly distracted and brainwashed, stupor. That way they can continue to elect their political ****** to office, and continue to maintain their grip on 100% of the political power they currently own in this country. If you voted (God Forbid), it would cancel-out their vote, and they would lose control. They can''t have that. Now can they? If you don''t vote, my friends, you''re nothing but an unwashed "Pleb" to those that do, and the ruling class should rightfully consider themselves superior to you in every way. They do, after all, have all the power, while you have none. If you''re too apathetic and powerless to do anything for yourself more time-consuming than driving down to Mickey D''s to buy a milk shake in order to sieze control of your life, and your country''s destiny, then perhaps you deserve to be ruled over like the "Pleb" that you then are. The time to act is now. The time for political revolution has come. The time for Ron Paul is NOW!

YOU LIVE IN INTERESTING TIMES
America is tipping way too far back in her easy chair. Something BIG is about to happen, and I predict this upcoming 2008 Presidential Election will be extremely pivotal. I''m not going to name any candidates. You probably already know who my favorite one is. But let me make my point absolutely clear: If you think times are boring, think again. If you think the future is predictable, think again. My advice to everyone who reads this is to be thoughtful. Trust only that wisdom which is your own. 90% of mainstream media in this country is controlled by fewer than 20 different organizations. Unfortunately, they, like the sold-out political ****** who pretend tp serve us in Washington, were bought and paid for by the military-industrial-pharmacutical complex decades ago. Therefore, mainsteam media will paint pictures they want to paint, and people will open their minds to pictures they want to see. So, be skeptical. Be wise. Research issues and talking points on your own, and share what you learn with those you love. The future of your family tree may lay in the balance.
