Edwards Says Clinton Would Continue War

Democratic Hopeful Says Slams Front-Runner's Opposition To Setting A Timetable

(AP)  Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards criticized Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton over her unwillingness to set a timetable for withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq, saying her position is tantamount to "continuing the war."

Speaking to reporters after a town hall meeting Sunday in Reno, Edwards contrasted his Iraq views with Clinton's and said the Democratic front-runner owes it to voters to provide specific plans on how to end the war.

Edwards said his plan calls for the immediate withdrawal of as many as 50,000 troops and the full withdrawal of all troops within 10 months. He also said he would prohibit permanent U.S. military bases in Iraq.

At a town hall meeting Friday in nearby Fernley, Clinton said she would withdraw troops "as soon as I can" if President Bush fails to do so. Campaign aides called her a war opponent but said she has offered no timetable for a troop withdrawal.

"She says that she will end the war, but she also says she will continue combat missions in Iraq and keep combat troops stationed in Iraq," Edwards said. "From my perspective, that's not ending the war. That's continuing the war. In fact, it's continuing the occupation. So we have really different views about that."

In a news release issued before the town hall meeting, Edwards said, "On such an important question we need honesty and answers, not double-talk and evasions."

Clinton spokeswoman Hilarie Grey defended the New York senator, saying Edwards' remarks reflect a struggling candidate.

"This is a bogus attack from a candidate who is angry that his own campaign hasn't taken off," Grey said. "The fact is that Sen. Edwards and Sen. Clinton have both said they'd use U.S. forces to go after al Qaeda in Iraq. So it's unfortunate that Sen. Edwards keeps making this phony charge when he's out campaigning."

Edwards, who's locked in a tight race in Iowa with Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama, also criticized Clinton over her response to an Edwards' television ad concerning health care.

In the ad, the former North Carolina senator promises to use his power as president to take away health care benefits from members of Congress unless they pass universal health care by July 2009.

The Clinton campaign branded the threat as "unconstitutional gimmickry" and said the president doesn't have the power to take health care away from Congress unilaterally.

"To me, this is exactly the kind of response you'd expect from a Washington insider," Edwards said. "(It's) circling the wagons, looking out for politicians inside of Washington inside of shaking up the place and doing what's necessary to get universal health care passed. This is another example of the clear choices our country has in this election."

Still, Edwards said all the Democratic candidates offer a clear choice to voters. He called the Republican candidates "George Bush on steroids. They want to keep the war in Iraq going and we want to end the war."

Edwards is running a distant third in Nevada, according to a CNN poll conducted Nov. 9-13 in which Clinton had 51 percent, Obama 23 percent and Edwards 11 percent.

A FOREIGN POLICY OF FREEDOM
All of the other presidential candidates want to continue our illegal police action in Iraq indefinitely, and they do not rule out a preemptive (nuclear) first strike against Iran. Conversely, Ron Paul voted against our (undeclared) war in Iraq, which was sold to us with lies. The area is more dangerous now than when we entered it. We destroyed a regime hated by our direct enemies--the jihadists, and created thousands of new recruits for them. The war in Iraq has cost more than 3,500 American lives and almost a trillion dollars. We need a leader in the White House who will ensure this never happens again. Both Jefferson and Washington warned us about entangling ourselves in the affairs of other nations. Today, we have 750 foreign bases and troops in 130 countries. We can continue to fund and fight no-win police actions around the globe, or we can refocus on securing our borders against illegal aliens who are invading us from the South. No war should ever be fought without a Declaration of War voted upon by the Congress, as required by The Constitution. John Holland, the founder of a leading advocacy organization for troops, veterans, and POW/MIAs, delivered an enthusiastic endorsement of Congressman Paul, before the congressman addressed the crowd. The results of a nationwide telephone poll, announced by Zogby on November 19th, reveals that Americans want to vote for a candidate who protects liberty; who wants to shrink government; and who wants to immediately withdraw our troops from Iraq - positions of Ron Paul. As part of a blind, spread poll, 1009 likely voters [from all parties] were provided with descriptions of four different candidates and asked to choose who they would vote for based on each one''s attributes and political platform. 33% of pollees chose Ron Paul, 19% chose Rudy Giuliani, 15% chose Mitt Romney and 13% chose Fred Thompson. The results clearly illustrate that the country is crying out for Ron Paul, which is why mainstream media has launched a PR offensive to marginalize his accomplishments and suppress the Congressman''s name recognition. In a seperate question, over 49% of pollees said they would be more likely to vote for a candidate who would begin an immediate withdrawal from Iraq. In fact, Ron Paul won in every demographic in this poll (religious voters, NASCAR fans, military families, etc.) except amongst 503 preselected Zogby pollees, which identified themselves as "extremely conservative," which Guiliani won when they were only presented with the candidate''s name rather than his biography and platform. When I consider the prospect of a War with Iran, I wonder whether or not another major power might be inclined to side with Iran and oppose us. 10% of China''s exports go to Iran and 12% of Germany''s. Also, many countries, including China, are heavily dependent on the 2,836,000 barrels of oil Iran exports everyday. Not a problem. I''m sure those folks won''t mind riding bikes until the war is over. As far as the Iranians are concerned, I''m sure they''re just dying (no pun intended) to be invaded, er, I mean "liberated" by Americans, considering the horrid 70% approval rating of Ahmadinejad and the terrible $8,700 gross domestic product per capita there (8.6% better than China). I''m sure we''ll be welcomed in the streets after we "shock and awe" their all important looking buildings to Jahannum and back. When I compare U.S. military numbers with Iran''s, what I find is truly alarming. The U.S. has 2.37 million soldiers ready for combat. Let''s compare that with little ol'' Iran, which has more soldiers available for combat than any country in the entire world. Actually, Iran has more combat-ready soldiers (11.7 million) than China and Russia combined. Talk about hell! The bottom line is that America can''t even handle Iraq. At one point, we thought we could rush in, smite some nubs with dirks and bunnle on back home in time to catch the next season of American Idol, but it didn''t quite work-out that way. Did it? With Iran, reality is going to hurt a lot more.

The Democrats will promise you anything to get you to vote for them. Reality is that most of their plans and schemes will fail. The Democrats remind me of a love sick teenager, not thinking clearly, and doing all the wrong things. The bickering and the competition amongst themselves proves they are unable to do a job that calls for strong leadership. Issues are no longer the issue ~ unless they are being used to illustrate how unethical the opposition is, they are named but never discussed in depth. VETERANS DENIED FREE SPEECH RIGHTS
Several pro-peace veterans were arrested when they protested their exclusion from a Veterans Day event in Boston. The local chapter of a group called Veterans for Peace estimated 15 of its members and supporters were arrested Sunday at the event sponsored by the American Legion. Boston Police said several arrests were made, but did not have an exact number. "We''re opposed to the U.S. invasion of Iraq; we''re opposed to the planned invasion of Iran," said group member Winston Warfield, a Vietnam War veteran." Warfield said the American Legion rejected their request to have a speaker at the event, which took place outside City Hall. A call to the American Legion office in Boston was not immediately returned Monday. "From our point of view, it''s a public affair," Warfield said.
