(CBS/AP)  Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick surrendered to U.S. marshals Monday, three weeks before his sentencing on a dogfighting charge and was being held in a regional jail.

Federal judge Henry Hudson signed an order today instructing the U.S. marshals to take Vick into custody based "solely on his desire to begin his period of incarceration prior to his sentencing hearing and not because of a violation of any condition of his bond," reports CBS News' Stephanie Lambidakis.

The order filed in U.S. District Court added that "Vick has indicated his desire to voluntarily enter custody prior to his sentencing hearing. It appearing appropriate to do so, the U.S. marshal is ordered to take custody of the Defendant immediately upon his surrender."

Vick is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 10 on the dogfighting conspiracy charge. He could be sentenced to up to five years in prison.

Vick is being held at Northern Neck Regional Jail in Warsaw until his sentencing, U.S. marshals told The Associated Press. The mixed-gender facility houses about 450 inmates.

"Today Michael Vick voluntarily self surrendered to U.S. Marshals Service in order to begin serving any sentence that may be imposed by the court," said Billy Martin, Vick's attorney. "From the beginning, Mr. Vick has accepted responsibility for his actions and his self surrender further demonstrates that acceptance."

In an e-mail sent to the AP, the U.S. attorney's office confirmed Vick's surrender but declined further comment.

This summer, Vick and three co-defendants pleaded guilty to charges related to a dogfighting operation financed by Vick. Bad Newz Kennels was based at a property owned by Vick in rural Surry County.

The NFL suspended Vick indefinitely and without pay.

Vick and his co-defendants still face state felony dogfighting charges.

"Crimes Punishable by UP to 5 years."

lol, with Vick''s cooperation in this case so far, the prosecution team will be lucky if Vick serves 6 months. Vick is a stand-up citizen, taking great responsibility for his actions. Good job Mike.

Go Hokies!

kansas1946, obviously you didn''t read the post, which stated Vick was a disgrace to the African American race, that''s who I was debating. So, stop go back and read his statement, then talk, until then, you have absolutely no clue of what''s being said..

realpatriot1, excellent point, I too, am a dog lover, and find Vick''s actions appalling, my two dogs, one is a Rottweiler mixed with pit and the other a Sheppard mixed, both male, and sweet as they can be, with the exception the Rottweiler chewed by seat belts, but you can''t help to love them.

So, I was outraged over what Vick was accused of doing, this does not negate that individuals accused of rape and murder shouldn''t receive harsh sentences, but those who can''t understand individuals that love animals shouldn''t be so quick to rush to judgment..

I feel that way about basically all animals, even the ones we consume..If I had to kill a chicken or slaughter a pig to eat, well I guess I''ll be eating fruits, nuts, beans, and vegetables. The most I would kill is "fish", and would feel apprehension.

I don''t like watching National Geographic and the Animal Planet and seeing individuals slaughtering sharks for sport, it makes me cringe and angry, cutting off the fins to serve in upscale Restaurants in Asia, I was infuriated. And the same goes for snakes, I love snakes, I couldn''t kill one to eat.

Maybe to some folks animals are meaningless, but to others who appreciate nature and all living things, animals are a blessing.

...lets see if i understand this ...its OK to have abortion, killing a HUMAN life and no jail time. But to kill an animal you''''''''re looking at 5 years in federal prison. I see it now an animal''''''''s is worth more than a human. What is happen to this nation. Can you say Double Standards!

Animals are not treated with the same rights and values under the law. That''s why criminal Vick gets to "volunteer" to show up to prison early, rather than taken there in shackles. And that''s why he only has a few months to a year to look forward to, rather than the life sentence, or in some states, death sentence, he''d get if he had committed the same crimes against humans.

And, in case you don''t know it, abortion is legal under certain circumstances. That''s the law. The fact that you''re probably part of some nutty right-wing religious sect which opposes abortion doesn''t give you any entitlement to try to deny animals the little amount of protection they have under the law.

Why do white folks always associate the actions of some black folk with the entire race, he''''s a disgrace to the entire black race, he doesn''''t represent the entire black race.
****************************
Well, while I agree 100pct with your premise, unless you replace "white people" with "some white people" you are guilty of what you are accusing white people of doing. There are some racists in the white community, and their are some thugs in the black community. It never occured to me (I am white) to associate dog fighting with the greater black community. In fact, here in Kansas most of the people I have known associated with this heinous practice have been red-necks who are probably members of the Klan! I don''t think race has anything to do with this case. Cruelty is cruelty and this guy is getting exactly what he deserves.

You problem is that you do not comprehend that a zygote is not a "human". Neither is a fetus.

If the were, they wouldn''t be called zygotes and fetuses, they''d be called "humans".

For your edification, Merriam-Webster defines "human as "a bipedal primate mammal".

Note: it doesn''t define "human" as a fetus or a zygote.

I hope this alleviates your confusion.

He is a disgrace to the African-American people? bdrlnt4rl, there are many white people from Africa. WHY do people insist on calling black people African American?

I hope Vick suffers horribly from what he''s done but I doubt it. They''ll glorify him in jail probably.
