Memo to: Ron Paul supporters
Subject: Your e-mails

Okay, enough is enough. Like every other journalist in America, and who knows, maybe the world or even the universe, I’ve been deluged with your letters and e-mails. So I’ve done as you asked and taken a closer look at your candidate. Here is what I’ve found:

1. Ron Paul is inconsistent. Though he calls himself a man of principle and is apparently admired as such by his ardent fans, his principles seem somewhat elastic. He rails against the Bush administration for its supposed assault on civil liberties, yet when he was asked at one of the debates whether Scooter Libby deserved a pardon, he said no. “He doesn’t deserve one because he was instrumental in leading the Congress and the people to support a war that we didn’t need to be in.” Notice that he didn’t say it was because Libby was guilty of committing a crime. No, because Libby argued for a policy with which Paul disagreed, he deserved to serve time in prison. Ron Paul, the libertarian, who presumably values liberty above all, is willing to deprive someone else of his because of a policy disagreement?

2. Ron Paul is historically challenged. He argues that by embracing isolationism, he fits within a Republican tradition stretching back to Eisenhower “who stopped the Korean War” and including Nixon “who stopped the war in Vietnam.” Let’s recap. Eisenhower threatened to use nuclear weapons against China. It was the Eisenhower administration that had a hand in toppling Iran’s Mohammad Mossedegh (an intervention that Paul has elsewhere cited as causing the United States grief 25 years later when the Islamists took power). Eisenhower also intervened in Guatemala, Cuba (planning for the Bay of Pigs began during his tenure) and Lebanon.

Nixon, an isolationist? Most observers, whatever they may make of detente with the U.S.S.R. and the opening to China, agree that Nixon was an emphatic internationalist. For the record, he intervened in many countries including Chile, Peru and Cambodia. And he saved Israel by resupplying her during the Yom Kippur war. Neither his successes nor failures grew out of a Paulesque policy of “minding our own business.”

3. Ron Paul is unserious. Suggesting that you will eliminate the IRS, the CIA, the FBI and other government agencies within weeks of taking office is ridiculous. These are bumper stickers, not serious reform proposals.

4. Ron Paul is too cozy with kooks and conspiracy theorists. As syndicated radio host Michael Medved has pointed out, Ron Paul’s newspaper column was carried by the American Free Press (a parent publication of the Hitler-praising Barnes Review). Paul may not have been aware of this. But though invited by Medved to disavow any connection, Paul has so far failed to respond.

Paul has appeared on the Alex Jones radio program not once, not twice, but three times. Jones is the sort who believes that black helicopters are coming to impose a police state on America. He is quite concerned about the Bohemian Grove, the Bilderbergers, the federal election system (it’s rigged, of course) and so on. Naturally, he believes that 9/11 was an inside job. Ron Paul has even appeared in a Jones film, "Endgame," the point of which is apparently that the Bilderbergers are plotting to control the world. They’ve already got Europe (through the European Union) and now are on the verge of securing America by means of a North American union that would unite Mexico, the United States and Canada.

Even if Paul says nothing insane in this film, his appearance alone calls his judgment into question. I have not seen "Endgame," but I have heard a tape of Paul on the Jones program just after the 2006 election. Jones asked the congressman whether the victory for the Democrats wasn’t a “rejection of neo-fascist imperialism.” Paul replied, “Yeah ... This was a healthy election as far as I’m concerned.”

Ron Paul is the favorite candidate of a number of racist, neo-Nazi and conspiracist Web sites. While Paul cannot be held accountable for the views of cranks and kooks, he can disavow their support and return their checks. He received $500 from Don Black, the proprietor of Stormfront.org and former Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan. He has not yet returned it.

Moreover, Paul seems to be playing a sly game with his conspiracy-minded fans. He does not explicitly endorse the crazier theories out there, but he hints at dark forces in the U.S. government threatening our liberties, he inveighs against the “neo-cons” (shorthand for Jews in some circles), and he gives aid and comfort to the paranoid by appearing on their favorite radio shows.

No, Ron Paul is not my candidate. Not for president. He might make a dandy new leader for the Branch Davidians.

Wow, what a hit piece! Good job, CBS News, that was one of the worst! I won''t go into everything, but I''ll go into a few...

Alan Keyes was in Borat... I won''t even go into how racist and bigoted that movie is! Ron Paul was asked a question about the 2006 election, by a person whose ideas may be out there. I''m not sure that''s a big deal. People with just as crazy ideas can be found in the White House, for at least the last 20 years.

I''ve never once heard the word ''Neo-con'' equate to Jew... That''s just a blatant lie, unless you''re hanging out with some evil people. Maybe I just hang out with smarter, much nicer folks.

Ron Paul is a non-interventionist, NOT an isolationist. I would also say that I believe that Nixon and Ike were both elected to stop the wars. I don''t think he ever said that they lived up to the promises.

The Libby thing, is of such little importance in general, for all the presidential candidates, that I''m not sure why you even put it in.

I have noticed, though, that in the past couple weeks, there have been a huge influx in Ron Paul hit pieces. I''m sad to see CBS News, whom I still like, participate in this. I realize it says NRO, but CBS News is allowing this to happen. Too bad...

This sort of character assassination is an old tired tactic. It is doing nothing to encourage honest debate regarding the real problems facing this country and only serves to keep a well-ensconsed but detatched political system in charge of our government. So politically incorrect sources have given support to Ron Paul. The other candidates (in both parties) have received support from financial interests that have embraced policies that have put America''s shrinking middle class in economic competition with third world serfs and slaves--these same sources, by the way, have the wherewithal to advertise heavily through the traditional electronic media such as CBS.

Please dispense with the guilt-by association propagandistic tactics and debate positions that Mr. Paul has clearly stated--they are readily available through his many speeches and columns.

These right-wing-nuts at the NRO and at large have nothing to say any more but bitter mumblings.

They''ve completely ruined the Republican party, ruined our government, ruined our military readiness, ruined our US economy and the dollar. Now they want to stomp the party''s last best hope to restore dignity to the once noble GOP.

I thought this article supplied some very good balance, to offset the reams of swill spewed out by RonPaulies spambot minions. I find their endless, repetitive spam nauseating.

RP will NEVER get the Republican nomination, regardless of how much spam his little spambots copy and paste.

By MyIDonCBS: "RP will NEVER get the Republican nomination, regardless of how much spam his little spambots copy and paste." Boy, that is pretty far fetched for no proof whatsoever. Your right though, it will be hard as the electoral college has already made their decision and the people''s votes no longer matter.

Suggesting removing big government that is not allowed by the Constitution is reasonable. Unreasonable is big and bigger federal government.

Nice hatchet job CBS. This shows the big media is scared.

Hit piece?

You have got to be kidding me!

Is your loyalty that ego that you shrivel-up whenever your God Paul takes a bit of criticism?

Whenever any other candidate takes the slightest criticism, God Paul''s cronies jam the site with spam.

kingaaronm, you also said

"I have noticed, though, that in the past couple weeks, there have been a huge influx in Ron Paul hit pieces."

Maybe because your spammers have been making your God Paul a tempting target ...?

Don''t you use your own brain?

kingaaronm: Do you have any idea how many potential voters for your candidate-of-choice that you alienate by spamming your opinions? No matter how many times you repeat something, it won''t convince anyone unless you have a valid argument. If your argument is valid, intelligent people will read, evaluate and then accept or reject it. But your spamming makes you look like a fanatical cult member and your candidate like a demagogue.

Is that the best you can come up with as an attack on Ron Paul''s character? You''re actually hitting on his strengths:
He has the most consistent voting record of any other candidate, voting according to constitutional principles rather than party pressures.

Ron Paul wants to trade goods and services with the world instead of imposing military presence.

Ron Paul is completely serious about reducing bloated and constitutionally flawed federal programs. Let it be known that it would be more feasible to eliminate the IRS than to attempt complicated redistributions of wealth. The Constitutional framework made this nation great and fundamentally sound, while wealth redistribution causes empires to fall like a house of cards without exception. Ron Paul is visionary for simply keeping his word while the other candidates are yes men to this or that spending program.
And yes, Ron Paul is attracting liberals, conservatives, libertarians, and others who want someone with a track record of honesty.
So, thanks for your failed attempt at trying to smear Ron Paul''s character. I assure you that Paul will continue to protect your constitutional right to print less-than-truthful statements without a federal program to end poor journalism. In the meantime, the groundswell of Ron Paul supporters is growing vastly larger.

Don''t believe the Hillary or Ghouliani hype. Both are pro-war, pro-immigration, pro-tax, pro-big brother, and pro-government controlling your life. Vote Ron Paul for a real change. Please name one good freaking reason why you should vote for Hillary or Ghouliani! The media''s does NOT want you to think about issues like how money is really created, who the national debt is really owed to, who really pushes these ridiculous wars, and why immigration controls are never enforced. Vote for a change. Boycott controlled media.

Thanks Mona Charen for telling me who to vote for. Like most people, I can''t think for myself, so I''ll just vote for who you''re voting for. I don''t read any articles written by any company that''s not owned by WorldCorp who has my best interests at heart. In fact, I want a nanny president. I''ll vote for Hillary and hope that someone will come change my kids'' diapers for me. I hope Hillary just takes my wallet and confiscates my property and just lives my life for me because I can''t find money in my budget for important things like going to the doctor. Although I find plenty of money for my new toys like my iPhone and plasma TV and for living in a nice big house that''s three times as big as anything my parents lived in.

I watched the CNN debates and besides Kucinich and Biden, not one of these moron candidates could simply give a yes or no answer. RON PAUL draws excitement and honesty. That is why he is so popular Is it that hard??? The american people took notice. The news media, by the way who
is controlled by the elites, don''t want the american
people to know about RON PAUL. But, too late. His supporters know the media try to trash him, aren''t
falling for that trash the media spews. All the media

american people don''t want to keep hearing about queen

"Neo-con" is now short-hand for Jews?

What a sly, cynical attempt at trying to shame and silence all those who can''t stand the neo-conservatives and the foreign policy debacles they''ve brought us. First, they falsely brayed that anti-war (and anti-neo-con) equaled anti-patriotism; now, in Mona Charen''s world I guess anti-war equals anti-Semitism.

I won''t vote for Ron Paul for other reasons, and I don''t know how HE feels about Jews. But no one should seriously suggest that the millions of Americans (except for a few anti-Semitic whackos) who hate the war and the neo-conservatives who brought it to us are Jew haters.

It reminds me of an Orwellian type of twisted logic in the 50s and 60s: Mr. Doe is a liar; Communists are liars; therefore, Mr. Doe (and anybody who agrees with him) is a Communist.

I guess in Mona Charen''s world: Some Jews are neo-conservatives or neo-con supporters; Ron Paul and the majority of Americans dislike neo-cons and their war; therefore, all anti-war Americans are anti-Jewish.

Charen is stirring a pot devoid of logic. And adding anti-Semitism as a false, poisonous ingredient.

Look around. Aren''t you paying more for everything? Don''t be afraid of Ron Paul. He will still have the Congress to keep him in check. By voting for him we will send a clear message that the traditional politician, both parties, are the same and can''t be trusted anymore. We hear the same thing from every presidential hopeful and then they never deliver. Just listen to the candidates they will tell you how bad our lives are. We are loosing our jobs, houses, retirement, healthcare, getting poor education for our kids. Our dollar is worth 40% less compared to the Euro. Gas is going up and so are all utilites. its only getting worse not better. They all tell you the same *** year after year but nothing changes, only we are paying more and getting less. Higher taxes, US debt is through the roof. We are not the sheep they think we are. Americans unite against the lies and make a change.

Ha ha. Are you kidding me? This is inconsistency? How about you go look at his voting record.

Perhaps you should also realize that Paul thinks the Iraq war is unconstitutional and it''s well know that Libby helped mislead the American public AND Congress so that they''d support the war. Hmm... hardly sounds like a policy disagreement when you throw a few more facts in there, huh? Even if Paul is wrong in thinking the war is unconstitutional, this point hardly reflect any inconsistency.

1. ron paul never said that scooter liby should be pardon for that reasonhe said%u201CHe doesn%u2019t deserve one because he commited a crime and its not the first time, he was instrumental in leading the Congress and the people to support a war that we didn%u2019t need to be in.%u201D
2. dr. paul wasn''t talking about eisenhower as a whole he was pointing out that the anti-war stance is traditionaly a conservative position
nixon, an isolationist? no he opened up trade with china, which is what ron paul would do with all nations
3. ron paul never said that that he would do these things in his first week, however the cia has been known to spend massive sums of money and torture people to do a job easily done otherwise so he might get rid of it and use our military inteligence agencies and do this at a lower cost and are less likley to usurp oru constitution in the process
and the irs might be abolished once we balance our budget and cut costs
4.

luv2ski51: A national sales tax is simple to implement. Pay as you spend. No tax returns, no records to keep, no IRS, no accountants to pay, no loopholes, no special credits for special interests, no social engineering, no class warfare.

Can any of you Ron Paul supporters explain how he can get rid of the IRS, stop or reduce your taxes, and still finance the government, the army, navy and air force (all national defense necessities). Pay the $500 billion dollars (every year) in interest on the $9 trillion national debt, let alone pay it back?

This man is a snake-oil salesman and, like a wise man once said, there%u2019s a sucker born every minute.

What did we do before the income tax ****? Before 1913 the government got along just fine. It''s funny how the federal reserve came about the same time as the income tax. Another fraud on the American people. The money they steal from you goes to the interest the federal reserve charges for the loans they make to the government. I for one am tired of paying for bridges to nowhere, welfare, politicians flying around the country at the tax payers expense and everything else they waste our money on. As far as defense I do not consider black water and all the other no bid contractors a legitimate use of the tax payers monies. If the diplomats want security they should pay for it themselves.
You''re the sucker if you think your government gives a ***** about you.

Mona Charen has been a Neoconscum apologist from day 1, backing the Decider-in-Chimp''s programs all the way.

Even if everything Mona said about Ron Paul were proven true, if the next thing she said was that the sky is blue, it would still be advisable to run outside and check.

And any word published by the Mouth of Sauron, NRO, needs to be carefully scrutinized. These are the folks who think the Bushit presidency is a great triumph for America.
