Romney Puts Effort Into New Hampshire

GOP Candidate Hopes "Volume" Campaigning Will Secure Standing

(AP)  Walk into Mitt Romney's New Hampshire headquarters and you see a blend of high technology and old-fashioned political heavy lifting that's become a hallmark of his primary campaign.

On one shelf, for example, sit rows of neatly stacked cell phones, standing by for the staff to set up a phone bank - anywhere volunteers can be assembled.

"Someone says they can get eight people in Grafton County, we're there," said Rich Killion, a campaign adviser.

Romney is hardly the only Republican presidential contender competing here. Rudy Giuliani is stepping up his campaigning in New Hampshire, John McCain won the last time there was a competitive GOP primary here and Ron Paul has money and surprisingly strong support.

But it's Romney, the former governor from next-door Massachusetts, who is hoping hardest that a victory in the Iowa caucuses followed by a strong showing in New Hampshire primary will propel him toward the GOP nomination.

Polls show Romney maintaining a lead here, and if he doesn't win, it won't be for a lack of effort.

He will return to the state Friday for three sets of campaign appearances over four days. His staff expects him to spend roughly half of his time in New Hampshire during December, buoyed by nightly visits to his vacation home in Wolfeboro.

Romney has already spent more time than any other candidate campaigning in the lead primary state, and he's been advertising on local TV virtually nonstop since April.

"It's all about volume," said Jim Merrill, Romney's state coordinator. "We're trying to meet as many voters as possible. New Hampshire voters always make up their minds late in the process, so we want to be here when they do."

A St. Anselm College poll in mid-October showed Romney leading the pack with 32 percent, followed by Giuliani at 22 percent and McCain at 15 percent. A Marist College poll at the beginning of October pegged Romney at 27 percent, Giuliani at 21 percent and McCain at 17 percent.

A mid-September CNN/WMUR-TV poll had the race even, with Romney at 25 percent and Giuliani at 24. A similar CNN/WMUR poll in July had Romney at 33 percent and Giuliani at 18 percent.

The Romney campaign believes it sent a message last week to the state's all-important fiscal conservatives by winning the endorsement of Sen. Judd Gregg, a former governor and the state's most senior Republican.

"He brings us the ability to point to someone who knows the federal budget process and knows the government and can say to others, `This is the best person, I think, for president,"' said Tom Rath, a former New Hampshire attorney general who is a senior adviser to Romney.

However, there are several unknown factors for Romney.

One is how his standing will be affected once his rivals begin to match him dollar-for-dollar with advertising. Paul, a Texas congressman, is already on TV and radio thanks to fundraising that included a record $4 million one-day Internet haul earlier this week.

Romney on Thursday sought to prove he won't lose the air war, at least at this point. He launched a new television ad touting his opposition to illegal immigration, ahead of a weekend spent campaigning on the issue in the Granite State. The on-air and in-person push is certain to help Romney in a state where airtime is relatively inexpensive and Romney is a familiar face.

Another question is whether the front-running Romney will be targeted by a "527," one of the special interest groups that derive their name from a provision in the federal tax code. One such group, "Swift Boat Veterans for Truth," questioned Democrat John Kerry's Vietnam War accomplishments in the 2004 general election, boosting President Bush.

A third issue is whether Giuliani, the former mayor of New York, or McCain, the senator from Arizona, will take a run at Romney with negative advertising. The Romney campaign has tested what it terms "comparative" advertising against all its rivals, as it insists those rivals are also doing, but says such spots will be used only if they go after him first.

Would that mean trying to reach social conservatives by highlighting his 38-year marriage in contrast to divorcees like Giuliani, McCain and former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson?

"We're allowed to say that," Rath replied, singling out Romney's long marriage. "It's the second part we're not allowed to say - and we're not going to."

RON PAUL CAN WIN THE ELECTION
Ron Paul can win the GOP nomination. If he does, I predict a landslide victory in November of 2008. Even the oddsmakers in Vegas aren''t willing to discount his chances. They''re currently giving him 3:1 odds to win against Hitlery if he gets the nomination. Romney, McCain and the globalist, sell-out Giuliani aren''t given anything better than a 35:1 chance of winning if they get the GOP nod. All it takes is for formerly apathetic individuals to get off the couch and nominate him in their local Republican primary or caucus process. Political parties are nothing more than tools. Those who read the manual and use the tools properly will win the nomination for their candidate. For the past 20 years, many good people have stayed at home and accepted whatever candidate they let others select for them. This year, those people are learning how to use their vote to make a difference. In order to do so, you must participate in the Republican primary election or caucus process in your county, precinct or district. Nothing else matters. If we do this, we win. If not, we lose. CBS NEWS PREJUDICED AGAINST RON PAUL
Most people can see right through the prejudice CBS News obviously has towards Ron Paul. In the few times they''ve covered him at all, I''m suprised they didn''t have one of their graphics artists Photoshop some devil horns on top of his head in that worst ever photograph they always use of him. CBS obviously thinks that if they pretend Paul isn''t a top-tier GOP candidate, then their readers and viewers will eventually think so too. Whenever they are is forced to do a story on Paul, because some other mainstream source is covering him for some reason, the fact that their editors work overtime to slant their stories in such a way as to either marginalize his accomplishment, or present Paul in the most negative light possible, is obvious to anyone with a modicum of intelligence. "What about their polls?," you ask? As far as the CBS News poll is concerned, they don''t even include Paul on the list of GOP candidates which pollees can choose from, and then afterwards, report to you that Paul doesn''t even rank in their final tally. Ron Paul is getting major grass roots support nationwide. He has over 60,498 meetup group members in 1,155 Groups from 904 cities nationwide, with another 7,033 people more folks just waiting to hear when a new meetup group will start near them. He''s won ALL of the viewer phone-in polls in ALL of the GOP debates he''s been in, and has raised more money ($4.2 million) in one day than any other GOP candidate ever. Go Ron Go!

RON PAUL FIGHTS FOR THE RIGHT TO LIFE
Unlike Clinton and the so-called GOP frontrunner, Giuliani, Dr. Paul fights for the right of an innocent, unborn child. He believes the right to life is at the heart of the American ideals of liberty. His professional and legislative record demonstrates his strong commitment to this pro-life principle. In 40 years of medical practice, he never once considered performing an abortion, nor did he ever find abortion necessary to save the life of a pregnant woman. In Congress, he authored legislation that seeks to define life as beginning at conception (HR 1094). He is also the prime sponsor of HR 300, which would negate the effect of Roe v Wade by removing the ability of federal courts to interfere with state legislation to protect life. RON PAUL IS THE TAXPAYER''S BEST FRIEND
If he is elected President, Ron Paul will work to abolish the Federal Reserve System as well as the IRS, returning our country to the Gold Standard. He believes, as I do, that our current Income Tax System is unconstitutional, because it is a direct tax that is not equally apportioned as The Constitution requires. RON PAUL TAKES ON FEDERAL RESERVE CHAIRMAN
Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke appeared before the Congressional Joint Economic Committee Member, Congressman Ron Paul on November 8th, and had to face some tough criticism concerning the fact that the Fed has been increasing the money supply while at the same time refusing to raise the Prime Interest Rate in order to curb inflation and devaluation of the Dollar. Paul accused the Federal Reserve of "robbery," telling Bernanke, "There''s a dollar crisis out there and people''s money is being stolen," Paul said. "People who have saved, they''re being robbed. I mean, if you have a devaluation of the dollar at 10 percent, people have been robbed of 10 percent." Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke attempted to dispel that notion by explaining, "If somebody has their wealth in dollars and they''re going to buy consumer goods in dollars, then the only effect it has on their buying power is that it makes imported goods more expensive." Paul disagreed, reminding Bernanke, "Yeah, but not if you''re elderly and you have your wealth in CDs. Their cost of living is going-up no matter what your CPI says," adding finally, "Their cost of living is going up, and they''re hurting. And that''s why the people of this country are very upset."

RON PAUL: A GUN OWNER''S BEST FRIEND
Like Ron Paul, I share our Founders'' belief that in a free society each citizen must have the right to keep and bear arms. They ratified the Second Amendment knowing that this right is the guardian of every other right, and they all would be horrified by the proliferation of unconstitutional legislation that prevents Law-abiding Americans from exercising this right. Congressman, Paul has always supported the Second Amendment and these are some of the Bills he introduced in the current Congress to help restore respect for it: H.R. 1096 includes provisions repealing the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act and the Federal Firearms License Reform Act, two invasive and unconstitutional Bills. RON PAUL KNOWS HOW TO STOP ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION
The talk must stop. We must secure our borders now. A nation without secure borders is no nation at all. It makes no sense to fight terrorists abroad when our own front door is left unlocked. Ron Paul has a plan: (1.) Physically secure our borders and coastlines. We must do whatever it takes to control entry into our country before we undertake complicated immigration reform proposals. (2.) Enforce Visa rules. Immigration officials must track Visa holders and deport anyone who overstays their Visa or otherwise violates U.S. Law. This is especially important when we recall that a number of 9/11 terrorists had expired Visas. (3.) No amnesty. Estimates suggest that 10 to 20 million people are in our country illegally. Pass true immigration reform. The current system, and those proposed by ALL other candidates, is incoherent and unfair, and would allow up to 60 million more immigrants into our country.

RON PAUL WILL RESTORE U.S. SOVEREIGNTY
All of the trade deals and world government organizations, which all of the presidential candidates support (except Ron Paul), such as the ICC, NAFTA, GATT, WTO, and CAFTA, are all a major threat to our nation''s sovereignty. They transfer power from our government to unelected foreign elites. The ICC wants to try our soldiers as war criminals. Both the WTO and CAFTA could force Americans to get a prescription to take herbs and vitamins. The WTO has forced Congress to change our laws to meet their needs, and not our own. If anything, the WTO makes trade relations worse by giving foreign competitors a new way to attack U.S. jobs. The NAFTA superhighway, being built by a Spanish company, is just one part of a plan to erase our borders and create the North American Union, a single nation State like the EU, out of Canada, the U.S. and Mexico, with a new, unelected bureaucracy and money system. Forget about controlling immigration under the NAU scheme. There won''t be any borders anymore, or a free America. Our limited, constitutional government will be gone forever. Let''s not forget the UN either. It wants to impose a direct Carbon Tax on us. Ron Paul successfully fought this move in Congress last year, but if we are going to stop ongoing attempts of this world government body to rule over us, we need someone in the White House who knows how to say "No." We must withdraw from any organizations or treaty that infringes upon our nation''s sovereignty.

THEY DON''T CALL HIM "DOCTOR NO" FOR NO REASON
Congressman, Paul never votes for any Bill which he feels is not authorized by The Constitution, regardless of what it might be named. He feels most Laws should be made at the local or State level: the way our Founders intended. We are a Republic, and we have plenty of State lawmakers who are more than willing to make Laws which best serve their constituents. "Ron Paul is one of the easiest people in Congress to work with, because he bases his positions on the merits of issues," says Barney Frank, who has worked with Paul on efforts to ease the regulation of gambling and medical marijuana. "He is independent, but not ornery." Paul has made a habit of objecting to things that no one else objects to. In 2001, he was one of only three House Republicans to vote against the USA Patriot Act. He was the sole House member of either party to vote against the Financial Antiterrorism Act. In 1999, he was the only naysayer in a vote in favor of casting a medal to honor Rosa Parks. Nothing against Rosa Parks. Paul also voted against similar medals for Reagan and Pope John Paul II. He did, however, offer $100 of his own money to help pay for Reagan''s medal, and invited others in Congress to match his offer, but not one Member took him-up on it. Instead, Congress spent YOUR money. He not only routinely opposes resolutions that are unconstitutional, he votes against Bills which presume to advise foreign governments how to run their affairs.

RON PAUL RESISTS SPECIAL INTEREST
In Congress, Ron Paul is not only known for his lack of ego (a rare quality in D.C.), he''s widely admired for his resistance to the influence of special interest groups. Again. They don''t call him "Dr. No" for no reason. He consistanly votes against pork-barrel spending. In a rice-growing, cattle-ranching district, Paul consistently votes against farm subsidies. In the very district where, in 1900, a storm destroyed the city of Galveston, and where repairs and refugees from Hurricane Katrina continue to exact their toll, he votes against FEMA (the poster child of inept agencies) and flood aid. In a district that is home to thousands of employees of the Johnson Space Center, he votes against financing NASA. Nothwithstanding this, his constituants in the 14th District of Texas continue to re-relect him. Why? You ask? I think one voter I talked to there summarized it nicely when she said, "We may not like his vote. But we trust his heart." Even Tim Delaney, the editorial-page editor of The Victoria Advocate, an influential newspaper in the district, which has generally opposed Paul, on the grounds that a lone wolf cannot get the homeland-security financing he says the district needs, says, "Ron Paul is a very charismatic person. He has charm. He does not alter his position ever. His ideals are high. If a little old man calls up from the farm and says, I need a wheelchair, he''ll get the *** wheelchair for him. Ron Paul is a man of integrity."

Mitt Romney is the most viable "moderate" conservative in the Presidential race and the best qualified to bring new leadership with his vision for America''s future.

Governor Romney has an impressive resume to showcase. When elected governor in 2002 he assumed a monstrous 3 billion dollar deficit and put the state of Massachusetts back in the black without raising taxes.

Mitt also brought HEALTH INSURANCE TO ALL THE citizens of Massachusetts in 2006 WITHOUT raising taxes. Does anyone out there care about health care? Mitt''s been there done that.

His success in public office mirrors his record in the private sector at Bain Capitol where he reorganized and made household names of companies such as Domino''s Pizza and Staples.

Mitt also bailed out the U.S. Olympics in Salt Lake City in 2002, and turned a profit there for 100 million dollars. I have nicknamed Mitt, "the Rominator", for obvious reasons.

Candidate Romney graduated valedictorian in undergrad; then pursued a double degree at Harvard (M.B.A. and law) graduating in the top 5% of his class while doing so.

Romney has also taken a tough stance on terrorism and in an interview with the AP in June, Mitt indicated that he was "against" any permanent US bases in Iraq.

Romney currently leads all Republican candidates in New Hampshire, Iowa and Michigan, Nevada, and South Carolina.
