(AP)  Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul, aided by an extraordinary outpouring of Internet support Monday, hauled in more than $4.2 million in nearly 24 hours.

Paul, the Texas congressman with a libertarian tilt and an out-of-Iraq pitch, entered heady fundraising territory with a surge of Web-based giving tied to the commemoration of Guy Fawkes Day.

Fawkes was a British mercenary who failed in his attempt to kill King James I on Nov. 5, 1605. He also was the model for the protagonist in the movie "V for Vendetta." Paul backers motivated donors on the Internet with mashed-up clips of the film on the online video site YouTube as well as the Guy Fawkes Day refrain: "Remember, remember the 5th of November."

Paul's total deposed Mitt Romney as the single-day fundraising record holder in the Republican presidential field. When it comes to sums amassed in one day, Paul now ranks only behind Democrats Hillary Rodham Clinton, who raised nearly $6.2 million on June 30, and Barack Obama.

Paul spokesman Jesse Benton said the effort began independently about two months ago at the hands of Paul's backers. He said Paul picked up on the movement, mentioning in it speeches and interviews.

"It's been kind of building up virally," Benton said.

The $4.2 million represented online contributions from more than 37,000 donors, fundraising director Jonathan Bydlak said Monday night.

Paul has been lagging in the polls behind Republican front-runners. But he captured national attention at the end of September when he reported raising $5.2 million in three months, putting him fourth among Republican presidential candidates in fundraising for the quarter.

Paul as of Monday had raised more than $7 million since Oct. 1, more than half his goal of $12 million by the end of the year, according to his Web site.

Paul advocates limited government and low taxes like other Republicans, but he stands alone as the only GOP presidential candidate opposed to the Iraq war. He also has opposed Bush administration security measures that he says encroach on civil liberties.

Ohhhh, don''t be such a negative Nancy. What would be so bad about merging with Canada and Mexico? The Canadian dollar is really strong these days, I wouldn''t mind getting in on that action. Maybe we could volunteer to be a Canadian province?

Did I lie about Ron Paul''''s opposition to the 1964 Civil Rights Act? Research it, learn. Did I lie about Ron Paul using anti-gay hate language on his website? Research it, learn. Did I lie about Ron being a magnet for gun-nuts? Look at the comments on this site, learn. Did I lie about Ron Paul being a magnet for militant pro-lifers? Look at the comments on this site. Did I lie about Ron being a magnet for people who hate our federal government? Research it. I don''''t know where I lied, sister. Can you help me out?

Our borders? Don''t let none of the boogiemen get through! You people are so gullible! Lou Dobbs tells you the country is in the gutter ''cause of illegals and you eat it up like candy. Don''t you know when republicans are trying to defraud you? You give them your votes out of irrational fear, and they give you nothin'' in return. But you keep voting for ''em, like a crack addict buying a lottery ticket with his last dollar! LOL!

FYI

It is my understanding the REPUBLICANS didn''t like RON PAUL
so they redrew the district lines
so RON PAUL district would be majority BLACK VOTERS (Minority)

What the republican thought that the BLACKS
would VOTE DEMOCRAT (always faithful, to those who could care less)

any even with his district redrawn
to a LARGER MINORITY BIAS VOTE

RON PAUL STILL WON THE ELECTION BY A LANDSLIDE...

In law they have thing (IMPOSSIBLE)

prove a NEGATIVE
instead of prove a POSITIVE

I never had a press conference on
my PREJUDICE against the YELLOW SUN (NEGATIVE)
and I bet I''M not the only one on subject..

But if someone had a picture of me (POSITIVE)
it would be a different story....

I''''m curious, who are you backing in this election?
Posted by slider0713 at 10:35 AM : Nov 07, 2007

This election, I''''ve decided to back the truth. Whenever a candidate''''s campaign and supporters start talking about everything under
the sun, except what their real agenda is (abortion, guns, Jesus, freedom to discriminate, etc.), I''''m going to call them on it. Ron
Paul is a lot further right on all these issues than he and his supporters want to admit. You can dress them all up as federal v.
state issues, but they still smell like bigotry to me.

I''''m not a CBS employee and your attempt to discredit me that way instead of addressing my comments on the merits is a real disservice to your candidate. It makes you appear weak. And no, I''''m not a coward. I''''m still posting despite a death threat from USAwatchman, apparently one of the gun-nuts Ron Paul is attracting.

Show me one place Ron Paul has condemned racial discrimination, the KKK, White Supremacists, discrimination against ***, etc. I''''m not saying he never has, but he sure doesn''''t seem to want any bigots in this country to know it if he has. I''''d say he''''s catering to the bigot vote in this country, but I welcome anyone to present contrary evidence.

Have you noticed that they have even buried this story? It''''s sooo WRONG!
Posted by NYCMarine at 10:01 PM : Nov 07, 2007

Actually, they didn''t bury this story, but I will agree with you on one thing and one thing only, CBS''s coverage of the campaign races is pathetic. They are lazy, and undemocratic, like every other major news network. Sadly, although they are like every other network, they are not as bad as the other major networks, close but not quite as bad. I may not agree with Ron Paul, but I do think our supposed "journalists" in this country have an obligation to cover his campaign and CBS has an obligation to give him at least close to equal time, which they clearly are not doing. Shame on every news network for that. But you can thank republicans for this state of affairs.

cancide777,....."To sin by silence when they should protest makes cowards of men"----Abraham Lincoln.......If it helps the situation, by this quote I do not consider you a coward at all. I see nothing wrong or unconstitutional for someone to exercise their 1st. Amendment rights. That right deserves to be the first one as it is the most important of all. Though we disagree on matters, I will always back an American his/her right to speak their minds freely. You can count on it!

NYCMarine,......That right! It was in fact two democrat friends of mine ( Americans first ) that told me about Ron Paul and how his voting record was constitutionally impeccable and he didn''t tow any other line. I couldn''t believe it! Boy, did I get online to check this guy out and wallah, it was all true. Then I watched his Utube videos on his website. That''s all I needed to see and decided to give him back some free help for some of the free of charge baby deliveries that he did for folks who couldn''t afford to pay......What comes around goes around whether it''s good or bad. He''s a rare American that man!.....Ron Paul, the unsocialist, unCFR, yet pro-constitution candidate in 2008! GO USA!!!

Does everyone remember when the polls showed Brownback ahead of Ron Paul? But where is Brownback now? He is sitting busy kissing John McCain''s butt hoping for a VP spot. That''s where he is.

Also, does everyone remember when they said Ron Paul had not a snow balls chance of winning? I do that was like yesterday and today and everyday since this Presidential "race" started. CBS keeps forgetting to mention Ron Paul as a candidate. On the other hand, ABC covers him fairly. CBS leaves him out of polls, meaning they don''t even offer him as a choice to those that they call. They censor his supporters at Clinton rallies. I guess I have to ask, if Ron Paul didnt have a chance and doesnt have a chance and isn''t a "real" Republican then why censor him? Why not just let him hang himself?

I will tell you why. Every single one of the politicians and extremely rich powerful Elite that run tour government and media from behind the scenes is AFRAID of RON PAUL!! They fear him so much that they have no choice but, to censor his coverage and limit your exposure to him. They are so afraid that you might wake up and realize you are being lied to every day. Everytime you turn on the news owned by Rupert or Turner you are being misled!

Do us all a favor and remember that they said he wouldn''t make it this far. Do yourself a favor and choose a candidate based on his merits and morals and achievements not those of on gender, age or race.

VOTE RON PAUL! SEMPER FI!

So,......"Domestic Violence" is OK for you to commit? I''m sure that you said this out of passion by being provoked. Like wise USAwatchman in being provoked by you. It happens all the time on blogs. You been POUTING around like some kind of innocent victim here. And advertising that fact on other article comment section. I remember the teachers kid wusses in school that got away with just about anything they did wrong. But the first time someone let them have a little justice all heck broke loose on the kid. In other words, two wrongs don''t make it right, just even. Both of you grow up.

Ron Paul is not grass roots, or a politician. He is a statesman. This is the crucial difference that those feign covering his message miss. A politician is one who''s sole interest in life is political office or power. Everything in their life is oriented to achieve this. A "grass roots" campaign is merely a technique to get one''s foot in the door as a politician. The statesman is one who has built their entire life outside of politics successfully, and thus can afford to run on pure principle and see if there are those who agree. This is opposed to the traditional politician who must by necessity abandon principle to insure that there are those who agree until election day. This is a major reason why party affiliation is not important. Whether one agrees with Dr. Paul on specific issues or not, he represents a catalyst for the fundamental changes that Americans have paid lip service to for decades, but never got beyond the question of how.
