(CBS/AP)  A female schoolteacher and a 13-year-old boy believed to be on the run from central Nebraska may have crossed the border into Mexico, a Nebraska police investigator said Friday.

Paul Schwarz of the Lexington Police Department said the white Pontiac owned by 25-year-old Kelsey Peterson crossed the California border into Mexico around 11 p.m. on Tuesday.

"We know that that vehicle crossed the border and that they are probably in it or possibly in it," Schwarz said. "We've already had the FBI active on the case, so they, of course, will continue to be active on the case."

The pair disappeared after police began investigating whether they had an intimate relationship. Court documents supporting a warrant for the teacher's arrest chronicle love letters between the two.

Peterson, a sixth-grade math teacher and basketball coach at Lexington Middle School, was put on administrative leave last week, one day before the boy was last seen. A judge issued an arrest warrant Monday charging her with kidnapping, child abuse and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Authorities believed the two were traveling together in Peterson's car, and police nationwide and the FBI were notified about them. Court documents said the boy was last seen Oct. 26.

The boy, 13-year-old Fernando Rodriguez, was an eighth-grader at the school, but district Superintendent Todd Chessmore said he wasn't sure whether Peterson was his teacher two years ago.
Quote

We're still focused on locating both of them, whether they're together or not. I think right now anything is possible.

Dawson County Attorney Elizabeth Waterman

The Associated Press generally does not identify people who may be victims of sex crimes, but the boy's name has been widely publicized as police search for him.

According to court documents, Fernando's aunt Laura Rodriguez told police that she talked to her nephew by phone after he disappeared, and he asked her whether a visa or passport was required to travel to Mexico.

Court documents showed authorities had recovered several e-mails and letters in which the two professed their affection for one another.

In letters, the boy called Peterson his "Baby Gurl" and said their relationship was "just not about the sex but that it was pretty good," according to court documents.

Court documents say Peterson's school-issued laptop contained letters to the student, including one from April saying she loved him, thought he loved her, was "100 percent faithful" to him and would always be faithful.

Police said the boy contacted his family over the weekend and said the two were in Grand Island, about 85 miles east of Lexington. Police have also said the pair were spotted over the weekend in Denver and Ogallala, in western Nebraska near the northeast tip of Colorado.

Peterson's MySpace Web site indicated she last logged in to the site two days before Chessmore confiscated her laptop.

"Watch your thoughts for they become words. Watch your words for they become actions. Watch your actions for they become habits," Peterson said in her profile.

Lexington, a farming and meatpacking town of about 10,000, is about 220 miles west of Omaha in central Nebraska.

Beside''s that when are we going to be honest.

This woman has kidnapped and raped a 13 year old boy and should be charged. If this was a male teacher and a girl student there would be no question as to the charges. There is a fine line between fantasy and reality and the line here has been crossed. A 13 year old is not old enough to know the difference between hormones and love, but an adult does, or should, know the difference. That''s why there are age of consent laws.

What about all the young, uderage schoolgirls out there who want to "DO" their teacher. Should we NOT have laws to stop them from having *** with their male fantasy teacher? Whether it''s a boy or a girl, they are minors who aren''t mature enough to make these decisions. It''s RAPE...pure and simple

i had to chuckle at jetlizhan that was too funny lol... but seriously if a teen girl ran off with a man that age he would be in so much trouble right now.. but different standards have always been and always will be for girls and boys..... i dont see how a grown woman could think she was in love with a child but i guess stranger things happen everyday... i just dont see how a professional woman that should have some kind of intelligence could fall for a child with nothing in common with her..........what they gonna talk bout ? spongebob? lol.... prosecute her cause it IS against the law and she SHOULD HAVE know better.

I agree that it would be different if a male teacher did this. It''s true that men are from Mars. Most adults don''t know what "love" is. That''s why the divorce rate in America is 60 Percent.

Even if there was no sexual crime here, at the very least, she would be guilty of kidnapping! Taking him out of state, and out of the country, makes it a federal crime. I can''t imagine they would be able to hide for long, even in Mexico.

They should find her then toss her in the slammer with the rest of the sexual predators.

Equal punishment as a man taking a 13 yr old girl would get.

"Equal punishment as a man taking a 13 yr old girl would get. "

No chance... despite all their whining about equal rights - what women REALLY want, or I should say - what they''ve basically gotten are MORE rights... She''ll get a slap on the wrist & be let off easy...

Women can cut off their husbands johnsons - and all they have to do is cry on the stand & claim that he was abusive & they''ll get off easy

Women can kill their husbands with a shotgun while they sleep, claim abuse & get off easy

Women can attempt to kidnap a rival & get off easy

Women can molest children & get off easy

Women can be cruel & unfaithful yet still be granted child custody, alimony & the house - and oh yeah, the abuse claim helps here as well...

and they don''t even need any proof...

that''s the world we live it today

tuckerndfw... How would you feel if that was your 13 years old child that was being molested by a 25 year old? You say you think that all *** crime laws should be eliminated... then if you feel that way you must be a sexual preditor yourself. Those laws are there to protect children from being robbed of thier innocence!!! You obviously do not have any children of your own or you would not feel that way. Anyone who harms a child should be put in jail, no matter what the circumstance... even if this 13 year old boy willing had s*x with his teacher, he is still a child and this woman should not have had s*x or any type of relationship with him even if he begged her to, she is the adult she is supposed to be rational and know that this is wrong even if the boy did not!

If you truely don''t know of anyone harmed by sexual activities, I think you may want to hang around an ER for awhile, an 18mos old who''s grandfather had torn her wide open is one memory I would rather not have. Children are not capable of giving consent because they don''t understand the consequences. They would happily consent to eating sugar as a primary food and doing "everybody else is allowed" to do. There is a reason they don''t get apartments when they are born. They need parents to guide them.

"Please identify the specific UNIQUE (key word) "consequences" for a person who is 15 having sexual relations with a person who is 35." (Unbelievably posted by TUCKERNDFW)

The unique consequence would be that at the age of 15, this teenager is incapable of making rational decisions, sexual or otherwise, and now even moreso under the obvious duress that this kid is under.

Now granted, he may be having a "Grand Ol'' Time" with his honey cruising around the country, but hypothetically speaking, what if this chick has AIDS?

Chances are, she wouldnt tell him, he doesnt even know about AIDS, and he probably is incapabable of making a rational decision to protect himself during S.E.X.

So, that is why we have laws that protect minors.

TUCKER -- "There should be no category called "sexual assault." Assault is assault is assault. . . "

So, let me get this straight. Your not against the crime that has been committed, your just against the terminology used in that you think it glorifies awareness and produces harsher sentences against the guilty just because of they way they use that terminology.....

the 2nd of two comments I''ve read that made me laugh out loud. the other was the first comment about checking that woman''s house .. lolol

Don''t know why I''m feeling so callous to this situation, I mean I can understand where Tucker is coming from, maybe if the wasn''t from a group home, foster home .. whatever it is, he probably never was able to make very good connections and here is this woman showing attention ... I really doubt he is really suffering (and I realize I could be very wrong, but that is how I see it right now.) So we really need to address the actual problem. Which I stated above.

Don''t feed Tucker - trust me... he''s jacking off to your comments as we speak...

Bottom line here is that this teacher will get off like most women do for this & other horrible crimes... they don''t want equal rights, they want more rights... and that''s precisely what they''ve got - and somehow claim it''s their birthright because their female predecessors were discriminated against by our male predecessors... so THEY somehow get to benefit at our expense for something done to someone else BY people other than us - it''s like the reparations arguement... it apparently doesn''t HAVE to make any sense...

I agree with some of what you are saying. I do not see where it makes sense to label a kid a s*x offender for life because he has s*x with someone a little younger than him. (Say 17 and a 15 year old.) These type of laws can ruin a persons life. I do not agree with this situation though. The 13 year old is very much a child and especially when he is having s*x with someone that is in a position of authority over him.

TUCKER -- Well, as usual, I respectfully have to disagree with you.

For example: In your world, a child molester that moves into the neighborhood simply has an assault record and would reflect that as much.

I, however, have children to protect. I want to know what he has been accused of and that terminology "Child Molester", heightens my awareness where my kids and the community is concerned.

We have allowed our schools to be more than they should, we''ve taken too much of the role of raising a child away from the parents. Parent raised in poverty and ignorance unable to be the role models they need to be. Some working so hard they can''t be there for their kids in a cruel world, other contributing to the cruelness.
The freedom''s that have been fought and won for us have been degraded by too much government, taken by the thievery of those who want more for themselves at any cost. Poverty, ignorance and an out of control world he11 bent on entitlements.

There are consequences for children having sexual relations with adults. Those children rarely just go naturaly into an age appropriate (for the society in which we exist) relationship. The adult children have many issues to deal with, some more successfuly than others. Power is always an issue in their relationships, guilt for either attracting the attention as a child and/or for any enjoyment they may have derived from the relationship. Most often children are complient in order to feel special in a neglectful situation or to keep from bringing damage to the family in a number of ways. This 13yr old thinks he is making an adult choice, he isn''t. He has given up his education and community as well as causing pain and unwanted notoriety for his family, consequences a child can''t fully grasp. The teacher is a criminal. She had a higher duty than the average citizen to cause no harm to the children she came into contact with.

I thought we were making progress until you made this comment. Why don%u2019t you ask any rape victim what they would prefer? I am willing to bet the majority of them would prefer to have their face bashed in. Rape has NOTHING to do with s*x. It is about the need to completely control and humiliate another person. There are so many philological things that a rape victim goes through trying to deal with the rape. It does not even come close to your comparison.

Tucker: "Rape is an assault same as all other assaults."
To believe that all assaults are equal is just stupid. A slap in the face is not equal to being beaten into a coma with a baseball bat; yet both are assaults and have different terminology where in one is aggrivated or some similar. To believe that a punch in the face is equivelant to rape is also stupid beyond belief.
