(AP)  President Bush compared Congress' Democratic leaders Thursday with people who ignored the rise of Lenin and Hitler early in the last century, saying "the world paid a terrible price" then and risks similar consequences for inaction today.

Bush accused Congress of stalling important pieces of the fight to prevent new terrorist attacks by: dragging out and possibly jeopardizing confirmation of Michael Mukasey as attorney general, a key part of his national security team; failing to act on a bill governing eavesdropping on terrorist suspects; and moving too slowly to approve spending measures for the Iraq war, Pentagon and veterans programs.

"Unfortunately, on too many issues, some in Congress are behaving as if America is not at war," Bush said during a speech at the Heritage Foundation. "This is no time for Congress to weaken the Department of Justice by denying it a strong and effective leader. ... It's no time for Congress to weaken our ability to intercept information from terrorists about potential attacks on the United States of America. And this is no time for Congress to hold back vital funding for our troops as they fight al Qaeda terrorists and radicals in Afghanistan and Iraq."

Mr. Bush's remarks were his second in two days alleging inaction on Capitol Hill, which has been led by Democrats since January. This speech focused on measures related to the war on terror, while Wednesday's emphasized disputes between the White House and Congress over domestic issues.

He argued that the current debate over the Iraq war and the Bush administration's anti-terror methods harkens back to debates decades ago in Washington when Soviet founder Vladimir Lenin first talked about launching a communist revolution, when Adolf Hitler began moves to establish an "Aryan superstate" in Germany, and when some argued that Cold War accommodation of the Soviet Union was wiser than competition.

"Now we're at the start of a new century, and the same debate is once again unfolding, this time regarding my policy in the Middle East," Mr. Bush said. "Once again, voices in Washington are arguing that the watchword of the policy should be stability."

Mr. Bush said denial that "we are at war" is dangerous.

Quote

History teaches us that underestimating the words of evil, ambitious men is a terrible mistake.

President Bush
"History teaches us that underestimating the words of evil, ambitious men is a terrible mistake," Mr. Bush said. "Bin Laden and his terrorist allies have made their intentions as clear as Lenin and Hitler before them. And the question is, will we listen?"

Congress earned Bush's scorn even while he offered praise because a key Senate committee has passed a new eavesdropping bill containing many provisions the president wants. "It's an important step in the right direction," he said.

He repeated earlier criticisms of a move to combine spending bills for the Defense Department and veterans programs with one for labor, health and education matters that Republicans consider bloated. Mr. Bush also lamented that his emergency spending request for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan still languishes.

"When it comes to funding our troops, some in Washington should spend more time responding to the warnings of terrorists like Osama bin Laden and the requests of our commanders on the ground," Mr. Bush said, "and less time responding to the demands of MoveOn.org bloggers and Code Pink protesters."

I disagree with Bush on this. I think dems know full well what the danger is, yet they are more than willing to put us all at risk for the sake of political gain.

Which, to me, is far more hideous than the liberal mentality of late 30''s Europe.

If President Bush is taking a lesson from history and reminding us that Germans ignored the rise of Hitler, then what does the Demcratic Congressional effort mean as far as he is concerned?

"Dems Like Those Who Ignored Hitler"

Good point, but I think that Bush is more like Caligula.

Can anyone think of a good reason as to why this treasonous and mass-murderous dupe and his cabal have not been arrested and tried yet?

Many top WWII Nazis were convicted and hanged at Nuremberg, for implementing a script which is remarkably similar to that of the Bush regime.

Is the Bush-puppet welcome anywhere other than neo-fascistic hate factories like the Heritage Foundation?

We are at war precisely because Adolf Bush CHOSE war, not because it was the right thing to do. It was not. Blaming Democrats for his disaster clearly shows how inept he is at true leadership. Our chance to get the results of this man''s horrific presidency behind us is, unfortunately, still 445 days, 7 hours and 25 minutes away.

Hitler was small fry next to the greedy murderous NeoCons and Bu$hCo.

Hitler killed more Jews, but Bu$hCo did 9/11 to capture the world''s remaining oil.

There is a very good reason; the 23% that still don''t get it need to be shown the full scope of the disaster, and this will be to demonstrate the collapse of the most powerful nation ever into utter destitution.

The Bush Fuhrer (heil) will not likely surrender power peacfully.

Quite possibly, the cabal will manufacture a "crisis", declare martial law, and "postpone" elections before their term is up.

Bush speaks truth even though he doesn''t know it!

I agree, the Democrats are like those who ignored Hitler. However, I don''t think he meant himself as Hitler. Yet, like Hitler, Bush has worked tirelessly to create a state of fear and nationalism that justifies endless militarism, removal of civil rights, and ever more intrusion of the government into our personal liberties and privacy. Even the Nazis couldn''t listen in on every telephone line, but Bush has achieved that.

The Democrats, instead of standing up for Liberty, have knuckled under to the Bush-created propaganda and their fear of being shamed as un-american, and have collaborated with him in this dismantling of our republic. And we the people have let him do it as well, just like the Germans did in the 1930''s. It''s time for us to stop feeling so superior to them.

More demagoguery from the King of Lies. This guy thinks we are going to believe that they way to defend liberty is curtailing our liberties and privacy. He also pretend us to agree with him that they way to keep peace and security is by going to war. What a shame! I do not think that he knows what he is talking about when he brings up the names of Lenin or Hitler. In fact, Bush has been compared to Hitler in many free countries worldwide. I''m going to keep close watch of Senators Clinton and Obama regarding Mukasey''s vote for confirmation or rejection of his appointment. And also regarding all these so called necessary measures to secure liberty by means of depriving us of our liberties. Yes, I will. I think that we have enough of nothing with Reid over there. If other Democrats in the Senate want to be part of the nothing, then we merely wasted our time, effort and votes when we said that we wanted some change. Not a revolution. Just some change. Let''s see if Obama and Clinton deliver, or if it is just more of the same we have had for so many decades.

I recall hearing some speak of the USSR this way. That we had to confront them militarily - it was the only way. Well, turns out they were wrong. Just as Bush is so terribly wrong now.

GW clearly is getting desperate. The nation won''t support a pre-emptive war with Iran - that is clear. I''m not even sure the military brass will have it as clearly it will touch off a massive conflagration in the Middle East. One that no one knows where it will end.

Empires can be ruined by spoiled, clueless war-mongering morons like Bush.

I worry that the total is more than 24% that buy into this monster. I worry that a good 40% of our country has essentially bought into this regime as acceptable.
Help us all if more than 24% think that Bush and these cronies are anything but evil, but these "value voters" seem to have no clue and feast on this stuff as supporting god-as-they-see-him rather than just licking up Bush''s bile and bringing us closer to destruction.

They should have pulled funding for the war and impeached this lying son of a ***. He is a pathetic twerp who has delusions of being great and is in reality a great president wanna be, who had his chance to be great but threw it away along with the lives of US soldiers and Iraqi civilians.

Now Bush is trying to make the boogey man case again and is using the same tired old script.

Bush now has an "enabling act"--just like the one Hitler had---did whatever he wanted without knowledge of Congress or anyone else.

We have been backing off Bin Laden for years, there have been numerous times we had him and were told to "back off".

What are we sitting around for?

We need to call, write fax email all our Congressmes/women.
It''s up to us.

Mukasey can''t save you Bush. In fact nothing will save your doomed presidency (unless you get ''lucky'' and there''s another 9/11 type attack of course.)

It is beyond amazing he''s talking like this about Iran. It just shows what happens when you choose to believe in an ideology over reality.

Mukasey can''t tell us if he thinks the method invented during the Spanish Inquisition and used by Japanese war criminals in WWII on our soldiers is indeed torture or not. That disqualifies him. Bush is such a whiner.
Bush and other Neocons'' Hitler analogy is silly. The Soviet Union had more to do with Hitler''s demise than anyone. Does Bush see himself as Stalin then?

Kind of funny, Bush talking about Lenin.

At the time, Lenin was working to overthrow a czar who kept getting into wars while letting his own nation deteriorate and his people go without food and medicine.

Sound familiar?

Can you think of anybody else that wants to be the Czar with absolute, unquestionable power?

Boy, he really had hit bottom and started digging, hasn''t he? The speech given yesterday at the White House, with all his brainless GOP goons behind him, he looked like a spoiled little brat surrounded by his big brothers. It was a sad sight indeed, unworthy of a US president. Actually, it was unworthy of anyone above the age of 12.

I am a liberal and I do not feel at all happpy about the Dems in Congress, nor how little they seem to try. If they got voted out, I would not feel bad. I don''t fight Republicans who complain about them. It isn''t worth the effort to defend them.

The Reps too, no matter what Bush wants or wants to veto, they uphold him. Republicans could have gotten some serious forgiveness, if they has overturned the Bush veto on SCHiP, but they couldn''t even do that. It is unfathomable that all Republicans advocate all Bush''s doings all the time. It defies the law of averages.

The whole government is the worst I have seen in my lifetime. Corruption cannot bring forth good things, and there are no good things coming out of Washington these days, only media pollution and twisted truths, and ill-will driven by that overridding mantra to win no matter what it takes.

Well, I hope our country lives through Bush getting his fill of winning, no matter what it takes.
