Faulty Intel Source "Curve Ball" Revealed

60 Minutes: Iraqi's Fabricated Story Of Biological Weapons Aided U.S. Arguments For Invasion

  • Play CBS Video Video Curve Ball Revealed

Bob Simon tells the story of the Iraqi defector known as "Curve Ball," whose fabricated story of mobile biological weapons drove the U.S. argument for invading Iraq.

  • Video Drumheller On Early Warnings

"Only on the Web:" Former CIA agent Tyler Drumheller was warned by German authorities that the Iraqi intelligence source known as Curve Ball might not be credible.

  • Rafid Ahmed Alwan, seen here dancing at a Baghdad wedding in 1993.

  • Interactive WMD Fallout

Controversy surrounds the hunt for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.

(CBS)  The imagery was very close to what Curve Ball had described, with one exception: "If you look at the photos, all the way back to 1998, there was a wall that was built there," Drumheller points out. "Like a cinderblock wall that was built there, that nothing could go through."

The wall stood right in front of where Curve Ball said the trucks went in. CIA analysts who believed in Curve Ball had an explanation.

"There was an idea that it could have been a fake wall," Drumheller says.

The analysts believed Iraq had put up a fake wall to make the Americans think no trucks could pass through. The analysts also believed Curve Ball because he named names. He claimed that Dr. Basil al Sa'ati, a noted nuclear scientist, was a senior official in Iraq’s mobile bio-weapons program. British intelligence found Dr. Basil outside of Iraq and pressed him on Djerf al Nadaf, as did 60 Minutes.

"Rafid Alwan told German intelligence that you personally were fully involved in the project to use Djerf al Nadaf for mobile biological weapons," Simon tells Dr. Basil.

"Big lie," the doctor replies.

If something were going on there, Dr. Basil says he would "definitely" have known about it.

"There are people in the American intelligence community…who believe that seed purification is a cover for biological weapons production," Simon remarks.

"No. It was, it was really seed purification," the doctor replies.

Dr. Basil pointed out that if he had been working on something top secret, why did Saddam let him emigrate from Iraq in 1999? In Germany, Curve Ball was caught by surprise. He didn't know Dr. Basil had left Iraq. Curve Ball became less cooperative, more nervous in debriefings. The Germans became uneasy about their source. And they weren't alone. At a CIA meeting in December 2002, the agency’s former central group chief, Margaret Henoch, raised her own doubts.

"I said, 'You know, I don't know who this guy is. There's no proof that he is who he is. There’s no proof that any of this ever happened. And, from my perspective, I just don’t think we should trust this,'" Henoch recalls.

The top analyst, who believed Curve Ball, brought up the alleged accident at Djerf al Nadaf and said there were pictures of Curve Ball in a hazmat suit.

"Then I said, 'How do you know that was him if he's completely covered? 'Cause it could be me.' And, as God as my witness, she looked at me like a pig looking at a wristwatch. And I thought it was over. And, when I went back, I sort of said to my boss, 'Well, I'm such a genius,'" Henoch says.

"That’s it for Curve Ball," Simon remarks.

"We killed that one," Henoch says. "And it was whack-a-mole. I mean, he just popped right back up."

Curve Ball was still seen as credible at the highest level of the CIA.

On Dec. 18, 2002, sources tell 60 Minutes that an urgent request from CIA Director George Tenet was relayed to the head of German intelligence. Tenet was going to meet President Bush in three days to discuss the case against Iraq. Tenet wanted the Germans to let Curve Ball appear on television or have an American expert debrief Curve Ball and then go on TV with the story.

Failing that, Tenet wanted to use Curve Ball's information publicly. An answer was requested within 48 hours, before Tenet went to the White House.

I will bet you a space shuttle that "Curve Ball" was a rogue CIA plant, coached and installed by George Herbert Walker Bush''s deep network from his Iran-Contra treason days, just one of several put in place to fulfill his wet dream of "getting back" at Saddam for *** him on an oil deal. Remember, the plans for invading Iraq were already on Bush One''s desk back in 1992, when he was forced to give up his original plot for seizing Iraq''s oil fields when the traitor was trounced by President Clinton.

Too bad Clinton didn''t have the guts to have Herbert arrested and tried for his treason right then. It would have saved us a lot of grief and a lot of lives.

"Curveball" gave the bushdicks everything they wanted on a platinum platter. So now he''s living the good life, while hundreds of thousands of people have been murdered because of his lies -- and instead of prosecuting him, the bushdicks are probably still paying him off.

This article on "curve ball" seemed to be a one sided White House lame blame game. Seems very late to be making excuses - so, what is the White House up to or are they just trying to fool themselves. There also some very publicly know facts that they got wrong. I would like to see George Tenant, his old key staff and Valerie Wilson along with Collen Powell on 60 minutes to set the record straight.

Re the Curveball report:

1) Who is Central Group Chief, Margaret Henoch referring to when discussing that she was ignored? Why did that person%u2019s input take precedent, and not Margaret%u2019s? Who was involved?

2) How historically typical is it for one person to make a %u201Cslam dunk%u201D remark that the Executive claims as the sole reason for making the final call? (i.e., in relation to Kennedy%u2019s wisdom and pause during the missile crisis.) Given history, should we citizens have expected the Executive or Powell to have pressed further beyond Tenant%u2019s %u201Cslam dunk?%u201D

3) The report says Curveball appeared credible as presented by the CIA. But to whom, and why?

4) Is the ease with which evidence was accepted by the Executive historically typical or suspect?

5) The month following Powell%u2019s presentation, several concrete flaws were reported to the Executive regarding Curveball%u2019s story. Why did it not change anything? Why were the inspectors%u2019 findings ignored? This was well after %u201Cslam dunk,%u201D so why did we still go to war? Who knew what when?

This report is not just about Curveball. It%u2019s ultimately another report about the events leading to war. I would consider the above questions connected to accountability higher priority than Curveball%u2019s grades or work in cosmetics.

You often have reports that are important for Americans to consume. If you read this, thanks! If not, have a great week anyway.

Scapegoating is probably this nation''s number ONE sport, above all else. The simple fact remains that the Cheney-Bush administration was going to war in order to depose Saddam Hussein no matter what. It''s so easy to find cranks and crackpots to bolster any position. If the Far Right in this country had been told we''d be spending trillions to benefit Republican war profiteers in this disastrous misventure known as the "war on terror," based soley on some psychic''s encounter with the ghost of JonBenet Ramsey, they would still be cheerleading Cheney-Bush to this very moment. We need someone who understands that UBL is still alive; that Putin should not get away with launching a radiological nuclear attack against the West-- whether to kill one person or a million! No one in the media seems to care about some very dire issues we as a nation face today and tomorrow. Is it any wonder the leadership in Iran laughs at us in contempt? Whatever you can say about Saddam Hussein, it was his Iraq that was the bastion in that region against Persian expansionism. Does anyone recall the Iran-Iraq war of the 1980s??? The Iranians laugh because their "Big Satan" got rid of their "Iraqi Satan" and it didn''t cost them one thin dime. "Dubya" Bush will go down in history as the real "butcher of Bagdadh." In the eyes of the world, we are indeed responsible for every drop of blood shed after March 18, 2003 in that country. The time has come to face some harsh reality.

TheDieHard--Why would Billy want to arrest Bush?-- He was partnered with him in the Mena drug and money smuggling...He vacations with the Bushies...Barbara describes him as being like another son...Its the same reason that George43 let Clinton of the hook...The same reason Whitewater and stained blue dresses were investigated and the important crimes of the Clinton presidency were glossed over by the crooked lawyer who ran the investigations...Clinton could no more arrest "the Queen of May" than its son, George43 could arrest Billy Blythe.

Lies, misrepresentations, fear-mongering, are all the worst political leaders can do to their citizens. This so-called president and his henchmen are guilty of all of this.

They must all be brought to account for their actions!

We are not safer, terrorism has not be reduced. On the contrary, the root of terror in occupied Palestine is still being ignored.

What we need is a President who will show us the way. Not the old way. Not the same way, but a NEW WAY. Think about this for a minute. What if we pulled all of our troops out of South Korea? They''ve been there for 50+ years. What if we quit worrying about Iran, but instead, realized that its having a nuclear weapon will not mean the end of the world? What if we pulled all of our troops out of the Middle-East, and brought them all home? What if we realistically addressed the National Debt, and paid attention to REALLY DOING SOMETHING about stopping illegal immigration? These are the ideas of Republican Presidential candidate, Dr. Ron Paul. He''s a ten term Congressman and a physician who has delivered over 4,000 babies. He''s an intellectual who''s published four books, three of which are devoted entirely to sound economics and one to foreign policy. He was raised on a dairy farm in Pennsylvania as a pious Lutheran, but now he attends a Baptist church. Paul is given to mulling things over morally. Whenever he recollects the helicopter pilots he treated as an Air Force Flight Surgeon (Captain) during the Vietnam War, a war which he now says was "totally unnecessary and illegal," he laments, "They were gung-ho. I''ve often thought about how many of those people never came back." Candidates with the high level of personal integrity and proven track record of adherance to The Constitution, Congressman Paul has always demonstrated only come around once in a lifetime, if we''re lucky.

Freedom is apparently popular, folks. I''m glad it is. In just the last 24 hours, he has already raised over $4,000,000 in grass roots donations from his supporters, beating Mitt Romney''s previous one-day (Republican) record of 3.1 million Dollars. Do the math, folks. Ron Paul certainly isn''t getting any money from the bankers or the military industrial complex like all the sold-out NWO candidates both on the left and the right who pretend to be his equal. He''s getting support from millions of REAL people who share in his Hope For America:

(1) No more meddling in other country''s political affairs
(2) No more aggressive military actions overseas
(3) No more pseudo-wars like the "War on Drugs"
(4) No more IRS and unconstitutional income taxes
(5) No more Federal Reserve (the group of private banks which owns our government)
(6) No more abortion
(7) No more U.N. participation
(8) No more federal Laws which are not authorized by The Constitution
(9) No more all-powerful federal government

They don''t call him "Dr. No" for no reason. The Doctor is in! Join us in this 21st Century political revolution at ronpaul2008.com

Thanks Everyone!

I support Ron Paul and his non-interventionist foreign policy. Hitlery wants to continue our illegal police action in Iraq until at least 2013, and she does not rule out a preemptive (nuclear) first strike against Iran. Ron Paul voted against our (undeclared) war in Iraq, which was sold to us with lies. The area is more dangerous now than when we entered it. We destroyed a regime hated by our direct enemies--the jihadists, and created thousands of new recruits for them. The war in Iraq has cost more than 3,400 American lives and almost a trillion dollars. We need a leader in the White House who will ensure this never happens again. Both Jefferson and Washington warned us about entangling ourselves in the affairs of other nations. Today, we have 750 foreign bases and troops in 130 countries. We are spread so thin that we have too few troops defending America. And now, there are new calls for a draft. We can continue to fund and fight no-win police actions around the globe, or we can refocus on securing our borders against illegal aliens who are invading our country from the South. No war should ever be fought without a Declaration of War voted upon by the Congress, as required by The Constitution. Under no circumstances should the U.S. again go to war as the result of a resolution that comes from an unelected, foreign body, such as the United Nations. Too often, we give foreign aid and intervene on behalf of governments that are despised. Then, we too become despised.

Ron Paul does not support secret offshore prisons like the one in Guantanamo, wherein our government tortures prisoners, who have no right to redress of grievance, or to Writ of Habeus Corpus. Ron Paul promises he will close these "illegal prisons" down. He wouldn''t necessarily just release the prisoners either. He said he would simply bring them to detainment facilities on U.S. soil where they would be entitled to an attorney, and to their day in Court--American Justice. Significant others agree with Paul. "Essentially, we have shaken the belief that the world had in America''s justice system by keeping a place like Guantanamo open and creating things like a military commission," former U.S. Secretary of State, Colin Powell recently said.

People have gotten wise to the fact that vaccines are contaminated with DNA fragments, viruses, fungus, mercury, and a cocktail of other poisonous toxins. Fleets of reputable studies have been published globally detailing the wide swaths of destruction caused by vaccines, including autism. So, now the establishment is on the offensive, attempting to bully us into submission. Big Pharma is one of the biggest businesses in the world. It is among the top three purchasers of advertisement in print, TV and radio. Thay have major pull. President Bush recently vetoed a Bill which would have forced Big Pharma to remove mercury from vaccines. If that''s not bad enough, parts of the so-called Patriot Act contains provisions that essentialy remove the spectre of civil liability against Big Pharma with respect to vaccines. This was done under the quise of protecting Big Pharma in case they had to quickly develop a vaccine to combat some form of biological terrorism. No other candidate for President understands health issues as well as Dr. Ron Paul does. He not only supported the Bill which would have removed mercury from our vaccines, he voted against the Patriot Act as well. Dr. Paul., an OB/GYN physician, who has delivered over 4,000 babies, has been the national leader in preserving our Health Freedom. He feels that Americans are justifiably concerned over the government''s escalating intervention into our freedom to choose what we eat and how we take care of our health. Go Ron Paul!
