The Democratic Senator from New York and former first lady sets her sights on the White House.

(CBS)  Sen. Hillary Clinton has widened her lead in the race for the Democratic Party's presidential nomination, according to the latest CBS News poll of Democratic primary voters. But more than one third of voters overall say they would definitely not vote for the former first lady.

In a hypothetical three-way contest, 51 percent of Democratic primary voters choose Clinton as the nominee. That's the highest percentage since CBS News started asking the question in the spring and an increase of seven points from September. Twenty-three percent back Sen. Barack Obama, while 13 percent support former Sen. John Edwards.

Sixty-four percent of Clinton's supporters say they "strongly favor" the former first lady, while 26 percent say they support her with reservations. Obama is strongly favored by 47 percent of his supporters, while 43 percent support the candidate with reservations.

If Clinton becomes the Democratic nominee, more than 70 percent of Democrats say they will consider voting for her or definitely vote for her for president. Only 6 percent of Democrats say they would not vote for her.

But among registered voters overall, 36 percent say they would definitely not vote for Clinton. Twenty-four percent would definitely vote for her, 21 percent would consider voting for her, and 19 percent say it’s too early to say.

Forty-six percent of registered voters believe that if Clinton is elected, she will divide Americans. Forty percent say she will bring Americans together.

Though Clinton is a practicing Methodist, three out of four registered voters do not think she has strong religious beliefs. Even a majority of Democratic primary voters - 63 percent - say her religious beliefs are not strong. Obama and Edwards are thought to be more religious than Clinton, though none of the three is thought to have strong religious beliefs by a majority of those surveyed.

Clinton is viewed favorably by 43 percent of all voters, while Obama is viewed favorably by 38 percent and Edwards by 30 percent. Significantly more Americans say they are undecided or don't know enough to have an opinion about Obama (37 percent) and Edwards (39 percent) than say the same about Clinton (16 percent).

When former Vice President Al Gore, who has not entered the race, is added as a choice for the Democratic nomination, he emerges as a serious contender. Gore garners support of 32 percent of Democratic primary voters, while Clinton gets 37 percent, Obama 16 percent, and Edwards 7 percent. Gore is viewed favorably by 46 percent of registered voters, his highest favorability rating since October, 2000.

Read the complete poll results here.

This poll was conducted among a random sample of 1282 adults nationwide, including 1143 registered voters, interviewed by telephone October 12-16, 2007. The error due to sampling for results based on the entire sample, and the sample of registered voters, could be plus or minus three percentage points. 456 interviews were conducted with Democratic primary voters. The margin of error for this subgroup is plus or minus five percentage points.

Yuck!

Oh well. At least it will finally be clear that there is really very little daylight between the leadership of the Corporate/AIPAC-owned Republican and Democrat Parties, if any.

I personally like Obama. I am not a Democrat, so don''t get polled on this. It will be a shame if the Democrats go with Hillary and lose us independents. The Democratic candidate whoever it is, will need independents.

Hopefully, once in the White House, Hillary will lead, instead of acting like the rest of the spineless cowards in the Democratic Party. Otherwise, FeelFree1 is 100% correct, and we might as well have put another brain-dead republican into the White House.

I guess I''m one of the naysayers here. We''ve been subjected to increasing instances where families are trying to rule the United Sates. Last time I looked that was called a dynasty. We had the Roosevelts, the Kennedys, the Clintons and the Bushes, trying to establish a royalty.

Enough is Enough. Haven''t we learned anything since 1776???

We need a clean sweep. Not only in our White House, but in our Congress and the Supreme Court. Until we pry the privileged and inherited money off our political process are we going to to able to make any progress towards a just and equitable system of government.

Each of us needs to think whether we are electing kings or presidents.

I really don''t know many who are supporting Hillary - on one or two - and we''re ny democrats. For most of us we''d vote Hillary only so long as its a choice between her and Rudy ... Rudy being the worst possible choice - as equally bad as georgie boy.

There''s one thing nobody can accuse Hillary of being - and that''s stupid. Now Bush on the otherhand had already proved just how almost unbelievably stupid he is - I mean come on - most of us wouldn''t have believed hos tupid he is till we saw him in action ... sheesh.

Are smart people really listening to polls? They mean nothing, unless you intend to simply vote based on what the polls say. If you intend to be biased with your vote, at least do it authentically and not because it''s the popular thing to do.

likeitis5050 - so I take it you''ve never had a class in statistics have you ?

Polls are pretty accurate. They are, however, also fleeting. It would appear Hillary has the Democratic Nomination, unless she really does something stupid. While that may be the case - I would hope that the Dems would realize there has GOT to be someone better than her in their party. Name recognition ain''t the only attribute needed.

I intend to vote for the most intelligent qualified candidate of either party. And guess what I don''t care at this point what their husband or family connections are. It is unfortunate that it will be Bush Clinton Bush Clinton, but I really didn''t think Bush the younger won.... And god forbid we have another republican lazy do nothing in office who works less then 8 hours a day. Hard work and dedication trumps lazy sound bites any day. Remember Bill worked late into the night.. and before you say "yeah getting his *** serviced" who the F cares... I for one look forward to a woman in the white house.. and boy does she have experience.. GO HILL... She will destroy these neocon bozo''s in the debates.

HITLERY is one of the most corrupt politicians. You have to be a complete MORON not to know that. If she becomes PRESIDENT she will continue Bush''s Iraq war and is all for starting a war with Iran. HITLERY is all for N.Y. Gov. Elliott Spitzer idea for illegal immigrants to get driver licenses which 72% of New Yorkers disagree with Spitzer. Hitlery says what people want to hear and has shady connections with Mr.
Hsu who is in jail right now. People, open your eyes.

Gee just like your lord and savior bush you always think you can have it both ways.. Bomb the innocent while claiming to do it in their defense. Your rational is beyond any imagination of an educated person. It really bother''s you that a thinking individual may actually win the white house instead of another lazy republican mouthpiece who was nothing better then a "C" student. Even your hero Ronald Reagan had alzheimer''s one year after leaving office. But that is the way you neocon''s like it.. A puppet regime, taking orders from nazi non thinker''s like yourself... You can fool some of the people some of the time but you can''t fool all the people all of the time.. Now please tell us something in support of your candidate and stop bashing Hillary.

Cheers now speak up in support of your republican candidates or better yet go to Fox News.. Oh forgot the right wing press won''t allow this type of open debate. Because it means you are not a patriot if you speak out against this administration. Which is what 70% of the US population would do.

It is tragic that Democrats have learned nothing over these, the Republican years. They must be content with the direction Bush has taken the nation, as Hillary represents the Bush foreign policies--and many of the financial and business interests that back him are backing Hillary. Democrats have two choices for real change--Kucinich or Gravel...otherwise, they might as well vote for Giuliani or Romney.

Guiliani is a flake, and Romney sounds like a smoothe car salesman...too good to be true...beware.

Good Lord, look at all the faith claims of Bush...when you could put a pitchfork in his hand, and find a forked tongue in his mouth...proclaiming faith does not make you a good person, your actions do.

My faith is mine...nobody can take that away or add to it...I don''t care what their faith is...

Running this country in a forthright honorable manner is more important. Looking after the people is more important. Dealing fair with the rest of the world is important. Being a strong example is important!

We are already the most powerful country on this earth! We don''t need to be thumbing our nose at ANYBODY! We need to fight evil with the REST of the world standing beside us. We''ve alienated them ALL! What kind of an example are we!

To the rest of the world we appear to be the greedy SOB''s that are running this country. That''s not ME, that''s not you. It''s got to STOP!

I am an educated democratic female who cannot stand and will never vote for Hillary.
In reality, half of the party cannot stand this woman. Many are threatening to leave the party if she is the nominee.
The dislike is almost like it is with republicans.
And I have yet to find anyone who supports Hillary.
It seems to me that the only ones who do are the Washington insiders and corporate media who anointed her 2 years ago.
When a minor nobody politico endorses her you hear about for days.
However, one of the most coveted endorsements was from Deval Patrick of Mass. and because he endorsed Obama there was almost a blackout on this news.
Daily we are fed media manipulated polls designed to discourage the voters from supporting their candidate by trying to make it seem it''s useless as Hillary is ''inevitable''.
What a bunch of garbage.
Any thinking person who watches the news or reads newspapers can clearly see the intent and guess what? No one believes the media and this is why they are so poorly thought of.

Time to set aside minor (yes, minor) disagreements and vote for the nominee in order to take back the White House. No, you cannot get everything you want in a nominee, but consider the alternative. Change happens slowly, incrementally. Let go of Kucinich and Gravel and Dodd. They have done a great job raising the level of discussion on important issues. But nothing will matter if the other party retains control for 4 or 8 more years. Winning IS everything.

If Mrs. Bill Clinton gets elected maybe she can make Slick Willy the Ambassador to China, since he already is so cozy with them.

Maybe together Bill and Hillary can pass more military secrets to the Communist Chinese as they rake in more anonymous contributions from them.

incog, what do you mean people can put a finger on why they don''t like Mrs. Bill Clinton??????

I''ll put a bunch of fingers on it for you:
1. Her attempted government takeover of our health care by a secret committee.
2. Her $100,000 cattle futures bribe.
3. Her role in the White House travel office firings, which led to the false prosecution of the office''s head which, if not illegal, was despicable enough behavior to bar her from any position of public trust.
4. Her deceptive testimony to a House investigating committee in which she said "I don''t recall" or its equivalent 50 times in a 42 paragraph statement. (This from the ''smartest woman in the world''.
5. Her role in the obtaining and misuse of some 900 FBI personal files on key Republicans. At the time, Hillary was not a government employee-therefore it is a felony punishable by jail and fines.
6. Hillary''s illegal and treasonous Communist Chinese campaign contributions

How many more freakin'' fingers do you want?

I agree totally. I believe it is VWCAT who is being duped to dislike this hard working intelligent woman because of how she has been portrayed all these years in the media. What don''t you like about her VWCAT? Is it that she came up from humble beginings without a silver spoon in her mouth, raised a bright educated child and saved her marriage from a right wing witch hunt. Or maybe it is because as first lady she actually took up a cause or two that mattered instead of some fluff like "keeping kids off drugs" or :being a librarian. Please why to women hate women of power so much. Remember she could have stayed home and baked cookies but instead exceled in everything she has done, with hard work and dedication. Not like ole Romney and Bush who were born into money.

As a Republican I am ashamed at the way things have turned out. As a simple citizen I am ashamed of our country and particularly our elected officials. TERM LIMITS would be a great start to correcting the problems we have within our government and elected officials.

No republican can galvanize and redirect the faithful and Unfortunately we seem bound to have a Lady President and if that is going to happen I hope she is smart enough to take Obama as her VP or Vice a Versa it would the only redeeming thing which could happen.

Choice is bleak and I do not like anyone in truth.

Although the election is still over a year away, I have made one decision I will not vote for any of the 17 major party contenders. None are capable of tackling our nations problems and none can unify America only divide it more. America needs a Statesman one that truly represents America and has the wisdom, patience and compassion to unify America.
None of these candidates have any of these qualifications.

I am an educated American woman...ask me if I will vote for Hlllary if she''s the nominee...you bet I will!

Before the republicans took over the government...look what we the people had...had homes we could afford, gas at $1.50 a gallon...the price of oil was $33.00/bl, we had insurance policies, we had good jobs and manufacturing...remember "Made in America"? Remember speaking to Americans on the telephone when you had a service problem?

The republican party cares nothing but about the oil that they can screw somebody else out of. They are about keeping the rich, rich, and they are bankrupting us with a senseless war to get oil and bleed us of our money so that we are helpless...just exactly where they have us! They are sending our jobs out of the country and putting us in service positions! And they are putting themselves in a position to operate purely on profit by making ALL the cost of doing business be paid by the consumer...instead of maintaining a decent profit margin. It''s called greed.

I don''t mind that anybody else have more than I do. I just want to maintain what''s mine. And more and more of mine is eroded by their greed.

If you want more of the same, then by God vote republican.

Hillary tried to do something good for this country...and republicans convinced us it was SOCIALISM! That''s pure hogwash! A national health program is no different from having a military, a police department, a fire department, a road and bridge department!
