Oops! U.S. Military Recruits Gays

The Skinny: Army, Navy, Air Force Ads That Ran On Gay Networking Web Site Are Pulled

  • Interactive Military 101

Basic training to learn all about America's fighting force.

(CBS)  The Skinny is Keach Hagey's take on the top news of the day and the best of the Internet.

The military was just looking for a few good men.

Until USA Today pointed it out yesterday, the Army, Navy and Air Force were unwittingly advertising for recruits on a Web site for gays, those same gays who are barred from military service if they are open about their sexual orientation.

The minute the paper informed them that they were advertising on GLEE.com, a networking site for gay professionals, recuiters - no doubt turning several shades of mortified purple - yanked the ads.

"We didn't knowingly advertise on that particular Web site," said Maj. Michael Baptista, advertising branch chief for the Army National Guard. He said the site does not "meet the moral standards" of the military.

Most of the military jobs posted were for hard-to-fill position requiring advanced training, such as thousands of Navy openings for doctors, dentists, intelligence analysts and Arabic translators.

The ads were placed through GLEE.com's parent company, New York-based Community Connect, as part of an alliance with Monster.com. Betty Huang of Community Connect says the military services, through private ad agencies, bought Monster's "diversity and inclusion" package. It includes posts on her company's niche websites for minorities and gays.

Oops!

Steve Ralls of the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, a gay advocacy group, could not supress a snicker. He noted that gays "have been drummed out of the Armed Forces simply for using sites like GLEE."

FCC Chief Proposes Giving Deregulation Another Shot

You can bet Rupert Murdoch's coffee tasted extra-delicious this morning.

The New York Times leads with news that that the Federal Communications Commission's chairman has circulated an "ambitious plan to relax the decades-old media ownership rules, including repealing a rule that forbids a company to own both a newspaper and a television or radio station in the same city." (Like, say, running the New York Post and a local Fox TV outlet in New York, a longtime dream of Murdoch's).

This would be a major deregulatory move. The last time the FCC tried something similar, under former chief Michael Powell three years ago, it was hit with a tsunami of hate mail from groups on both sides of the political aisle. An appeals court overturned the rule change.

But media times have changed since then. The Internet has been slowly but surely sucking the life out of newspapers, and in so doing turning the companies that own them upside down. This wave of upheaval and consolidation, according to the Times, "has put new pressure on regulators to loosen ownership rules."

It's still up in the air whether Kevin Martin, the F.C.C. chairman, would really dare to push through such a thing with only the narrow majority among commissioners that currently support the plan. But one thing is clear: if he does, there will be a showdown.

"If the chairman intends to do something before the end of the year," said Senator Byron Dorgan, a Democrat from North Dakota, "then there will be a firestorm of protest and I'm going to be carrying the wood."

And how about some newspaper for kindling while your at it, senator? No one seems to be using them for much else these days. Maybe they can help save us from media consolidation after all.

Most Fake Bombs Missed By TSA's Screeners

USA Today provides something to ponder next time you're waiting in that snaking airport security line.

In more than 60 percent of tests last year, security screeners at two of the nation's busiest airports failed to find bombs carried by undercover agents posing as passengers, according to a classified report obtained by the paper.

Screeners at Los Angeles International Airport missed about 75 percent of simulated explosives and bomb parts that Transportation Security Administration testers hid under their clothes or in carry-on bags at checkpoints, a TSA report shows. At Chicago's O'Hare International Airport, screeners missed about 60 percent of hidden bomb materials that were packed in everyday carry-ons.

The failure rates "stunned" experts, the paper reports. Homeland Security Department's former inspector general, Clark Kent Erwin, called it a "huge cause for concern."

Nobody bothered to interview flyers, who might have offered responses ranging from "@#$%" to "@#$%^&*!%#@!."

I might be breaking CBS''s "Rules of Engagement" which states "...the plain English: no libel, slander, no lying, no fabricating, no swearing at all, no words that teenagers use a lot that some people think aren''t swearing but we do, no insulting groups or individuals, no ethnic slurs and/or epithets, no religious bigotry, no threats of any kind, no bathroom humor, no comparing anyone to Hitler, Stalin or Pol Pot." by posting this link but I just couldn''t let the opportunity go by.

There is this lady, Key Griggs, that says that homosexual activity is a method of grooming weak boys for positions of power. Check it out.

LOL! One of the best acronyms ever coined! The whole DADT is so tired and useless. Who even gives a rats anymore?? So, recruit the gay dudes, they can adhere to the "rule" if they want to serve, and then they can serve with pride and honor the way THOUSANDS and thousands of other *** have.

This one made me laugh - after years of trying to get G@ys out of the military and witch hunts to oust them - now they are ONLY recruiting because their recruitment numbers are low...........whats next reinstating the draft?

What happened to Bush stance on G@ys - he is such a hypocrit..........I hope the ad campaigns are a flop. Why fight for an administration that doesn''t mind discriminating against them?

Why can''t they serve? They are in the police force and I don''t think there are issues with that. I think it wrong that only straight people are allowed to serve, fight, kill and be killed. What does being a h0m0 have to do with that? If the twit can''t control himself during boot camp or at a later date, kick his bu+ out of the service with a dishonorable discharge. What''s the issue here? If they are courageous enough to serve then I''ll give them kudos for it.

Hey, Simonsez40....care to read the ARTICLE?????

"We didn''t knowingly advertise on that particular Web site," said Maj. Michael Baptista, advertising branch chief for the Army National Guard. He said the site does not "meet the moral standards" of the military.

Their "stance" hasn''t changed. It was a blanket add and they weren''t aware that it had been posted there. Try reading the article, numbnutz. As for me? I don''t see a problem with homosexuals being in the military. Period.

They can abuse young boys in the halls of government, but others who might want to cannot enlist?

At any rate, it means fewer soldiers available to carry out the agendas of war worshiping death dealers, so that is OK by me.

Now if they would only exclude women, "minorities" and "the poor", we would be making some real progress toward ending war as a tool of foreign economic policy...

I couldn''t care less about homosexuals, and if a person prefers dating a toaster that''s their problem just as long nobody gets a communicable disease; but aren''t all the people in the military there for a common, shared cause that supersedes ALL others? Sounds like common sense to me...

I understand the fear that believing one of your fellow soldiers may ''have the hots'' for you, but as with all soldiers, it''s up to each one to keep their goolies tucked away. Keep it in the closet and do what you''re supposed to do, regardless of whom you bonk with. It''s not appropriate for anybody to put sexual proclivities over anything else. Period.

And what about the heterosexuals who harass one another?

Sure some moral standards.
Kill helpless people from five miles above them,
Throw gernades into sleeping family rooms.
Rape and burn the innocent girls.
Ya, these are great moral standards.
Something write home about, and get rewarded with f---ing medals.

While I don%u2019t like having too many laws enacted, especially constitutional amendments, one law that I believe would prevent needless wars would be one that required a mandatory draft for any declared war or any conflict having the (voted) approval of congress.
Such a lay would not affect the current military rules concerning g ay%u2018s.

This business of allowing queers in the service has got to stop. These people are fornicators of same gender indivduals and that''s all they think about. They average hundreds of encounters per year. How nice. The service is just like picnic grounds for them, sneaking around lusting and coveting, making every normal soldier ineasy and furious. What a morale builder. From the posts I have been reading on here, all I see are people finding some reason to bash one thing or another, with all sorts of "I know more than you" attitudes. It''s sad to read these, because most of you have never been in a situation where you depended on a person to "Watch your Back" in combat. There is someone on here that has written "I couldn%u2019t care less about homosexuals" and " regardless of whom you bonk with"....if you''re going to spout off with you ideals, I would recommend taking a writing course, you know, like an eighth grade level, because you just look stupid. If you want to get your point across, then I suggest you proof read before you post.

Department of Homeland Security-- 2
Unwilling to confront their monumental failures across the entire national security front, Bush and Cheney instead have tried to distract the public with a battle with congress. Bush and Cheney have made constitutionally unwarranted claims about the powers of the presidency not seen since the days of Richard Nixon. When Bush first made these claims, he barely avoided a mass exodus in protest by DOJ officials, and a crisis over executive misbehavior surely will mark his final year in office.

A basic requirement of presidential power is the oath to "execute faithfully the laws of the United States". Instead of carrying out the will of the people in congress, however, Bush and Cheney say they have the power to defy congress. Bush and his hundreds of signing statements leave a paper trial which is superb grounds for impeachment.

Bush once confided he understands the advantage of a dictatorship, but the urgent question is whether he understands the rule of constitutional law. Bush is the individual who, in November, 2005, facing an assembly of party members critical of his NSA spying program, bristled like a teenager caught drinking after curfew-- "Stop throwing the Constitution in my face! It''s just a GD)((#@*! piece of paper!"

Is this figure, who claims to be president of the United States, the same who pledged an oath to "protect, preserve and defend" the document he calls a "GD)((#@*! piece of paper"?

Six long years after 911, Bush still flounders with the mission he was assigned by the American people, in congress assembled. Rather than find bin Laden, and prosecute the so-called "War on Terror", Bush and Cheney have squandered both opportunity and a huge public funding, with little but a disastrous war to show for it.

A GAO investigation now reveals Bush has pulled a Katrina-scale failure of due diligence at the Department of Homeland Security. As its report says "... there is as yet no overall strategy to coordinate the various activities across federal agencies and the private sector. Further, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) lacks processes needed to address specific weaknesses in sharing information on control system vulnerabilities."

AP/CBS adds, "Screeners at Los Angeles International Airport missed about 75 percent of simulated explosives and bomb parts that Transportation Security Administration testers hid under their clothes or in carry-on bags at checkpoints, a TSA report shows. At Chicago''s O''Hare International Airport, screeners missed about 60 percent of hidden bomb materials that were packed in everyday carry-ons."

What has the DHS been doing? While we still should worry about an attack on a prominent public landmark like the World Trade Center of New York City, the newer mode of attack is far more damaging. Characteristically, however, Bush has been out to lunch.

"if you''''re going to spout off with "YOU IDEALS"

It can be embarrassing to criticize others over things you do yourself.

Besides, when most people proofread their work, they often read/see what they intended to write in the first place.

G**** have always served in our military, always have, always will. In our lifetimes, excluding them from military service will seems as stupid as excluding black people and women. I served with some; their behavior off the job was none of my business, any more than mine was any of theirs. This country has to learn to leave other people the hell alone.

To Mitch0927-- Most who post comments understand there will be misspellings and various artifacts of a computer keyboard, including repeated lettersssssss and mising letters or even non-registered l tters. Not to mention various grammatical signatures which serve as a measure of the poster''s literacy.

Fluency rarely substitutes for content, however, and some rudely-written posts contain gems of wisdom.

Granted, a little pre-submission editing will help and is always encouraged, but errors are often helpful for context-- they reveal more about the general education and viewpoint of the poster than he or she might otherwise reveal.

All to the good, of course...

alphaa10,
Your posts, as usual, are thoughtful and accurate.

The sad fact however, is that too many of us cannot admit/accept the fact that we have (through the failed, and often illegal, Bush administration policies/actions the last 7 years) been so wrong.
No mistake or error can ever be corrected without first admitting to the mistake or error.

This is truly a impressive grouping of hate mongers. You people seem to hate for hate sake. How do gay people in anyway effect your lives? Is anybody actively trying to recruit any of you join the gay team. Homosexuality has been shown to occur within nature in many higher life forms species. How can something that occurs in nature be against nature? I guess religion puts human beings above nature and immune to it complexities and variations.

Take a deep breath and consider the roots of raw your hatred. Social, religious, or both?

I''d hate to be gay if only for the fact that people would hate and reject me for existing.

I''m leaving the posting so rabid replies will not be read by me.
