Joe Biden Keeps Fighting

Political Players: Democratic Candidate Discusses Iraq, Health Care And The "Commander-In-Chief Test"

(CBS)  Political Players is a weekly conversation with the leaders, consultants, and activists who are shaping American politics. This week, CBS News' Brian Goldsmith talked with Delaware Sen. Joe Biden about his candidacy for president, his competitors for the Democratic nomination and the agenda driving his long-shot campaign.

CBSNews.com: Let's start with Iowa. You're spending most of this month there. If you fail to finish in the top three in Iowa, do you think your campaign's over?

Joe Biden: Well, I think it's probably the top four, if it's a close fourth. I think that, as you know better than I do, Iowa and New Hampshire are about expectations. But clearly, if I'm in the top three, I'm in the game. And depending on how the others do, if I'm a close fourth, I'm still in the game, in my view. Whereas others--because of fair or unfair expectations--if they were to finish third or fourth, they're probably gone.

CBSNews.com: You are in the top three in terms of endorsements in Iowa. And one of the things that the people who endorse you keep saying is that you're the most qualified. Do you think that the other candidates--Senator Clinton, Senator Obama--are not qualified to be president?

Joe Biden: No, no, I don't think that at all. But what I do think is that both my Senate record and not just my experience, but my track record, and my life experiences, I think make me the best equipped to deal with the two most important issues facing the country today. One is foreign policy, i.e. the war in Iraq and terrorism. And second is the plight of the middle class which I probably understand better than any of the top people running.

CBSNews.com: Do you think it's legitimate for Senator Clinton to talk about her experience as First Lady as relevant to preparing herself to become president?

Joe Biden: Well, I think it is legitimate, but while Mrs. Clinton was meeting socially with the prime minister of a country, I was sitting down and negotiating with them, or the foreign minister. So I do think the experience is relevant, and that she has a sense of what's going on internationally. And she knows how people react. But I think my experience--I know, I don't think--I know it's considerably deeper and more relevant.

CBSNews.com: One of Governor's Richardson's supporters in South Carolina switched to your campaign recently, because he thinks your position on Iraq is more responsible than Bill Richardson's. Do you think Bill Richardson--by saying, all of the troops out now--is demagoguing the issue?

Joe Biden: Well, I wouldn't say he's demagoguing the issue, but he's clearly changing his position. He initially started off months ago endorsing the Biden plan. He went from there to saying that, you know, we could have all troops out in three months to now acknowledging it'd take a year or two. I mean, so, I don't think Bill has, I'm not sure if Bill has thought it through. I think he should go back and read the statements he's made over the last six months, and they're very, very much at odds with themselves.

CBSNews.com: You were very close to Senator Kerry during his campaign. And you watched that up close. What lessons do you draw from his failure to be elected?

Joe Biden: The single most important test a candidate in the Democratic Party has to pass is the Commander-In-Chief test, not the president test. Who can be the Commander-In-Chief? And by Commander-In-Chief, what I mean by that is that people are looking for--and John unfairly didn't make the test--but people are looking for someone to do two things, in my view.

One is not merely to end the war in Iraq--which is critical--but also then to protect their interests, because unlike when I was a 29 year old kid running for the Senate against the war in Vietnam, everyone knew once we ended the war in Vietnam, there were no more shoes to drop.

But I ask audiences constantly, if I can end the war tomorrow in the best way possible, how many of you feel secure about our place in the Middle East, about what's going on in Iran, about the Korean peninsula, about China? So, they know they're looking for someone, in my view, with the depth and breadth of knowledge in these foreign policy and defense and terrorism issues who they can trust to take them through what they know is going be a pretty difficult decade.

I think if women would quit opening their legs to every date they go on, a few, no MOST of these "unwanted" pregnancies would cease to take place.

Start with modesty. Follow with decency. And seal the deal with abstinance. The morality of this country falls just a bit lower everytime someone chooses murder as a form of birth control.

You sick, derainged people. May you be dealt with in the same manner as you would have these precious little ones dealt.

And no, this country can''t afford SCHIP. There''s no way my company''s going to give me a COLA raise.

Bidens comment re Mrs. Clinton is really insulting. Biden doesn''t need to resort to bashing.

"Tyrants from Hitler to Mao to Stalin have sought to disarm their own citizens, for the simple reason that unarmed people are easier to control. Our Founders, having just expelled the British army, knew that the right to bear arms serves as the guardian of every other right. This is the principle so often ignored by both sides in the gun control debate. Only armed citizens can resist tyrannical government."

It seems that Biden does not get it. We Democrats with memories from the past --plagiarism-- simply do not trust you and we do not want you. Get it?

That a person with Joe Bidens exceptional qualifications and character is not a leading contender is testimony to the excellence of the 2008 field of Democratic presidential candidates.

Senator Biden is a very impressive candidate that is not getting the media attention he deserves. He is clearly more qualified and more experienced than any of the other candidates.

When people ask Biden a question, they always get a straight, non-political answer. He will not tell an audience what he thinks they may want to hear. He tells them the truth. He is refreshingly forthright and his answers always make sense. He is my first choice in this race.

Joe Biden is a fine man. I think he has made a fine Senator and would make a fine President and/or Secretary of State. We need this kind of man at the top of our government. He is honest and true. To the person who faulted him because he is pro-abortion: You obviously are not in favor of SCHIP. You want to force women to have unwanted babies, but then you don''t want to feed, clothe, house or medicate them. What kind of idiocy is that? Republican idiocy - down with it - let''s rid ourselves of it!

I think Joe Biden would be awesome in the White House. I have seen him on Meet the Press many times and he is for the people. I think that is why higher officials don''t want him in. This guy would straighten out this country.

I will never forget how Joe Biden is such a rabid gun-banning extremist.
If you want an anti-war and pro-liberty president, the only candidate for you is Dr. Ron Paul.

You know, when you talk about Democrats you are not just talking about the people in Washington. You are talking about a good portion of Americans-probably even some of your co-workers, neighbors, friends, ect. And vise-versa for Republicans
I believe this country was founded on having different points of views and holding different positions on issues. We should not breed hate against those that hold a different position. We can argue our positions are better yes-but at the same time have respect for different points of view. It is what makes us free.
As far as Joe biden, If you want to have a clear-true view of who he is-you should listen to him in the senate. It is also on his website. This guy is great! it is probably why he has been re-elected for 34 years. His speech on Sept 26 on Iraq gained the support of John Warner-a top Republican, along with many other republicans. We need someone that can work with both Democrats and Republicans to get anything done. i have yet to see anyone else that can do this as well. No plans that any of the candidates have will get passed without some support from both sides. So if anyone wants to put aside there partisan differences-I challenge you to take another look at this guy.

How could we trust someone who is willing to kill an unborn child or devalue the sanctity of marriage? How could we trust someone who would allow criminals to take advantage of the rights we''ve bled and sacrificed for?

Not a one of the candidates, save Hunter and Thompson, stand up for the conservation of our constitutional rights in the tradition of our founding fathers.

We need Hunter to stand up and make himself known.

In these troubled and dire time we live in, Joe Biden, to me, encompasses all that we desperately need for our nation:

1) Intelligence
2) Experience in ALL phases of government
3) Strength
4) Respect from world leaders
5) Diplomacy
6) Command of issues
7) Solutions to problems that face our nation
8) Honesty
9) Integrity
10) Respect and trust from his peers
11) Respect and trust from the people who follow him

Joe Biden certainly meets ALL of the criteria above.

I pray and hope every day that Mr. & Mrs. America, the people of Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina know in their hearts, that if we lose Joe Biden, we''ll have lost one of the best Presidents our nation will ever have.

Please watch a video I produced to show my support for Senator Biden. If you support him, please send the link below to family and friends, and ask them to do the same.

He is simply the best candidate running. If the other democratic contenders (and republican senators for that matter) side with him and vote for his plans...if they trust his leadership, then we should too! This talk of a great VP or SoS confirms his qualifications...now it is his name recgonition and money is the only thing that needs to grow.
