(CBS)  Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani maintains his status as the most-preferred nominee among Republican primary voters nationwide, a new CBS News poll finds. But six in ten of his backers say they have reservations about the candidate.

Twenty-nine percent of Republican primary voters favor Giuliani, while 21 percent support former Senator Fred Thompson. Senator John McCain's support remains at 18 percent, the same as last month, while former Mass. Gov. Mitt Romney receives 12 percent support. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, included in the choices in the poll for the first time, garners 4 percent support.

Giuliani leads among moderate primary voters, while Thompson leads among white evangelicals. Among conservatives, Giuliani and Thompson are neck and neck at 24 percent each. McCain runs second among moderates behind Giuliani, and third among conservatives and white evangelicals.

Giuliani's backers have growing reservations about their candidate, however. Today, 60 percent say they have their doubts, up from 45 percent in August. Thirty percent strongly favor the former New York City mayor, down from 47 percent two months ago.

Twenty-seven percent of Republican primary voters would definitely vote for Giuliani in the general election if he became the Republican Party’s presidential nominee, while 11 percent say they definitely will not vote for him. Fifty-one percent of Democrats, meanwhile, definitely would not vote for Giuliani, while 18 percent would at least consider it. A majority of voters overall say they would either consider voting for him or that it is too early to say.

All the major candidates for the Republican nomination are seen positively by Republican primary voters, although Giuliani is the only one with a net favorable rating from registered voters overall. Many voters have yet to make up their minds, particularly when it comes to Thompson, Romney, and Huckabee.

This poll was conducted among a random sample of 1282 adults nationwide, interviewed by telephone October 12-16, 2007. The error due to sampling for results based on the entire sample could be plus or minus three percentage points. The error for subgroups is higher.

Values? Giuliani is a cross dresser.

One of Giuliani''s advisers (Thomas Revenel) was busted for possession (w/ intent to sell) of 500 grams of coke.

If these are the "values" you want, please vote for Giuliani.

"Shaky" is a good dub for this guy. He''''s as shaky as the towers that fell right after he was told to escape his own office in Building 7 before the events even began!?!

Someone that should, and probably is, under secret investigation, should not be running for "any office" of "any kind" in our government.

Wonder if Guiliani wins, will he be prancing around
the white house in drag. Gotta admit, there is something
strange about him. He is scum though.

Hillary supported the war with Iraq when it came time to vote on doing it or not, then when it bacame unpopular with the voters she turned her back on the troops.

Recently she did a classic Clinton and lied. One day she told a small group of supporters at a fund raiser dinner that she sees the need to have our troops in Iraq "after the end of her second term in office if elected", so another 10 years or more. A week later she told a large group at a rally, when asked what her firts act as president would be if elected, that she would bring home the troops. Her "camp", when questioned, said "she did not say she would bring home all the troops".

Liar, Liar, just like the other clinton. Does anyone really want another decietful liar to lead our country?

Ron Paul has more cash for his primary campaign than either Romney or McCain. Why is the media blocking him out, and holding these guys up?

Don''''t let them make your decision for you. Stick it to the man, support Ron Paul!

Bush and the GOP terrorists in both houses of Congress have left such a skid mark on politics, that any republican that wears the moniker "republican" is doomed and shouldn''''t even bother running.

True, if your memory is no longer than 7 years. Less if you include the biography where he could remember everything, even though many years earlier he could remember nothing. Billy was not better than Bush, just terrible in other ways.

Anybody that has the (R) attached to their title, name, or current position, is doomed when running for president. It''s just amazing that a media giant like CBS hasn''t decided to cover Ron Paul like the other candidates. When a country has a media structure that censures information and a rapidly rising candidate for it''s presidency then we must explore why this can happen. Yet, the real news is the snips between Guilliani and Romney(???). Please start covering this man. He is deserving and actually has a plan that will help us evolve out of the financial, military, and bloated government mess we''ve gotten ourselves into.

"vote RON PAUL FOR PRESIDENT"--Posted by tylenol6

Ron Paul is painfully honest, and has a message that should be heard, but would be totally impracticable as president. I mean it''s a nice fantasy, but how could we really abolish the IRS, at least without immediately replacing it with another agency of different initials but the same mission?
