Poll: Most Back Dems In Kids' Health Fight

81 Percent Support Expanding S-CHIP, Including A Majority Of Republicans

Katie Couric says that the costs of not covering children's health under SCHIP are higher than those of the bill vetoed by President Bush. She says it's time for lawmakers to work out a compromise.

  • Fast Facts At A Glance: SCHIP

A look at the State Children's Health Insurance Program and the bill vetoed by President Bush.

(CBS)  As Democrats try to rally support to override President Bush's veto, a CBS News poll finds an overwhelming majority of Americans support legislation that would expand a popular children's health insurance program.

Eight in 10 Americans favor expanding the State Children's Health Insurance Program, or S-CHIP, including large majorities of Republicans, Democrats, and Independents.

While the president has raised concerns about the additional cost of expanding S-CHIP, those who favor the proposal say they'd even be willing to pay more in taxes to help the program cover more children.

More generally, the poll finds that only about one in five Americans (22 percent) approve of the president’s handling of health care. That's lower even than his approval rating on Iraq (26 percent).

WOULD YOU BE WILLING TO PAY MORE TAXES TO EXPAND S-CHIP? (Among those who favor expanding S-CHIP)

Mr. Bush's overall approval rating remains at 30 percent, slightly above the 27 percent approval for Congress.

While the showdown over S-CHIP doesn't appear to have given a boost to the president or the Congress, it may have helped push health care to the forefront of the 2008 presidential campaign.

Health care now ranks second - nearly equal with the war in Iraq - as the issue voters most want to hear the presidential contenders discuss. Jobs and the economy ranks third.

On other issues, the poll finds:

  • Nearly two-thirds of Americans (63 percent) continue to believe the war is going badly. A large majority also want troops out of Iraq within the next few years, though most don’t think that's likely to happen.

  • Americans are divided in assessing the condition of the national economy: half say it’s good and half say it’s bad. When looking ahead, however, 45 percent say the economy is getting worse, while only 9 percent say it's getting better

  • Americans remain concerned about the financial condition of Social Security as the oldest baby-boomers start to collect their first checks. Thirty percent say the system is in crisis, and another 36 percent say it's in serious financial trouble. Just 5 percent say the system is not in trouble.

Read the complete poll results here.

This poll was conducted among a random sample of 1282 adults nationwide, interviewed by telephone October 12-16, 2007. The error due to sampling for results based on the entire sample could be plus or minus three percentage points. The error for subgroups is higher.

I have to wonder what the result of this poll would be if the weighted the votes by the amount of taxes the people we already paying. That is, if you paid $1 in tax you got one vote if you paid $10 in tax you got ten votes.

It would show if we are creating a social program financed by the rich.

Don''t get me wrong, I think we need healthcare for ALL. But, I think there is a LOT of waste happening in the different health care plans out there today.

We need a new amendment for healthcare. The 10th amendment will make anything the Federal govt does unconstitutional. The Fed should make a uniform health care definition - this standardization alone would save enough to fund what Pelosi wants to do.

35 Billion for kids over 5 years. 170 billion a year for Iraq.

Gee, do you think anybody believes Chimpenstein when he says he vetoed SCHIP because he''s fiscally conservative?

I have absolutely no desire to have MY taxes increase to pay for someone elses child that if they couldn''t afford their health care they shouldn''t have had.

I have to PAY for health care for my family...no government agency is helping me. Increasing MY taxes is to pay for this would only increase the burden on my family and that''s not fair. My budget is already streched enough.

I think if this poll had spent 5-10 minutes actually explaining what the "expansion" really entailed, you would not have nearly that high of a number.
As laid out in most stories, sure lets provide for the chirren, when you dig a little deeper it starts falling apart and showing its true self.

Bush doesn''t give a rat''s patoot about the spawn of the hoi polloi. As he admitted himself, the "haves and have mores" are his base. He would deny health care to children so he can give another tax cut to his billionaire buddies. I''m surprised his most recent approval rating (24%) is as high as it is.

    This is so wrong.

The problem with health care is the Insurance Industy. It takes in over 2 TRILLION dollars for health care premiums in the USA, and spends 620 BILLION on administrative costs. That includes executive salaries that exceed tens of million of $$.

Its not time to start socialism in the United States by socializing health care. Its time reform insurance laws.

I agree with Bush on this one, why would a family of 4, bringing in 83K a year, qualify? I have a plan, since the Dems all want this so badly, why dont they come off there lifetime FULL benefits, and give that to the poor, an then, take away there lifetime retirement packages, in the HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS per year, as well as there spouses??????? If we have to take the cuts, so should THEY!
