(CBS/AP)  The Marine Corps is pushing to redeploy its forces from Iraq to Afghanistan to take the lead in combat operations there and essentially leave Iraq to the Army, The New York Times reported Thursday.

The commandant of the Marine Corps, Gen. James T. Conway, raised the issue with Defense Secretary Robert Gates last week, the Times reported. Senior military and Pentagon officials said supporters of the proposal, including some in the Army, believe that such a realignment could allow both services to operate more efficiently in the face of strains on the separate forces.

No major Marine units are among the 26,000 U.S. forces in Afghanistan while 25,000 Marines are among the 160,000 U.S. troops there, the paper noted.

Army and Pentagon leaders have warned repeatedly that the long, deadly and repeated deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan have stretched and stressed the Army, its soldiers and its families nearly to the breaking point. And there has been ongoing debate about how the service should transform itself to better meet the challenges of future wars.

At a news conference in London, Gates played down the talk about the Marines leaving Iraq.

"I had heard that they were beginning to think about that, and that's all that I've heard," Gates said. "I've seen no plan. No one has come to me with any proposals about it. My understanding is that it's, at this point, extremely preliminary thinking on the part of perhaps the staff in the Marine Corps. But I don't think at this point it has any stature."

Gates also said he is comfortable with Britain's decision to halve its troop levels in Iraq by spring, saying the plan had been worked out jointly with U.S. commanders.

In other developments:

  • U.S. troops backed by attack aircraft killed 19 suspected insurgents and 15 civilians, including nine children, in an operation targeting al Qaeda in Iraq leaders northwest of Baghdad on Thursday, the military said. An initial airstrike struck a "time-sensitive target," killing four insurgents in the Lake Tharthar area after intelligence reports indicated senior members of al Qaeda in Iraq were meeting there, according to a statement.

  • Rockets fired from a nearby abandoned school struck Camp Victory, killing two members of the U.S.-led coalition and wounding 40 other people on the sprawling headquarters for U.S. forces in Iraq, the military said Thursday.

  • Police said clashes Thursday between suspected al Qaeda gunmen and police at checkpoints in Abbara left at least one officer dead and two others wounded. One gunman was killed and several others fled.

  • Just east of Baqouba, suspected al-Qaeda gunmen took control of five Sunni villages, killing six people, including two police officers and wounding five others, a police official said. The attacks, which began Wednesday evening and continued until Thursday morning, happened two days after locals, supported by U.S. forces, had cleared the village of insurgents, the official said.

  • Also Thursday, gunmen killed five Iraqi civilians and wounded four in a morning attack on a minibus making its way from Khalis to Kirkuk.

  • A suicide car bombing in a Kirkuk market killed seven and wounded 50. The target of the attack was a three-car police convoy carrying the traffic police chief and his guards, police said. Three of the policemen were among the dead and the chief was wounded.

  • A lawsuit has been filed against Blackwater USA by families of Iraqis who died in a shooting involving company contractors. The suit in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., says the contractor has been paid more than a billion dollars by the U.S. government since 2001 and that the company violated federal laws in the September 16th shooting in which 17 Iraqis were killed.

  • U.N. officials in Iraq said Thursday they will be looking into whether war crimes and crimes against humanity were committed in recent shootings of Iraqi civilians by U.S.-hired contractors and urged U.S. authorities to hold private security firms accountable for unjustified killings of Iraqis.

On Wednesday, Iraqi officials demanded answers of an Australian-owned security company blamed in the killing of two Iraqi women. The scrutiny of Unity Resources Group began a day after its guards allegedly gunned down the two Armenian Christian women in their car.

    THERE YOU GO!

NOW BUSH CAN MOVE THE 26,000 PLUS MARINES IN IRAQ TO AFGHANISTAN,(WHERE THEY SHOULD BE)AND DECLARE A MAJOR TROOP REDUCTION BEFORE CHRISTMAS, AS HE PROMISED THE AMERICAN PEOPLE.

OF COURSE THE AMERICAN PEOPLE ARE NOT SMART ENOUGH TO KNOW THAT THE MOVE IS JUST A NUMBERS GAME THAT HE HAS BEEN PLAYING SINCE THE "SURGE" STARTED. YOU REMEMBER, 21,000 INCREASE THAT HAS TURNED INTO AROUND 40,000 PLUS. 168,000 ARMY STRONG NOW IN IRAQ.

    STAY THE COURSE...........

"In a speech Wednesday, Gates said the U.S. Army of the future will need to concentrate more on training foreign militaries, mastering other languages and customs, and honing its ability to fight smaller forces of insurgents. "

This works under the assumption that when the US starts a war, the rest of the world is required to fight it for them or to help them fight it.

We need to be reminded that when we wanted to start this war, most of the world was against the idea. Then Bush said that only those who helped could get some of the possible spoils, such as rebuilding contracts and oil contracts--then, some reluctantly signed on. This was perhaps illustrated to be mostly a joke as places like the Netherlands at one point, had less than 20 people in Iraq.
but the point is--Americans need to realize that war should not be a choice, it is a last resort, not a first, or a whim or even just a revenge motive. Too many people--whose only guilt is living in the invaded country--will suffer--to enter into war lightly.

If we want this point to be made, then the best thing to happen to our country would be if NO ONE from anywhere in the world helped us. This is a bed that we insisted on making, and we were warned of the potential for it to go all wrong. We should have to lie in it--shouldering the costs of the blood and treasure--by ourselves. see next post

That is what happens to rogues, mavericks and others who insist on going their own way--they should pay for it by themselves.

If this happened, then maybe...just maybe...before we decided to visit war on someone else--we would stop and really think about the costs to us and the world. BAil outs are bad. Bush expects them, because supposedly he got them for every fvck up all of his life--he thinks that is the way the world runs. But bailing out a spoiled rich kid who is basically a loser--is a lot different than bailing out the most powerful country in the world.

We need to do our own dirty work--instead of training others--we should keep, maintain and train our own military, have stockpiles of excess equipment and rotations of men waiting--NOT expect the world to help us. It is doable and we need not worry about the equipment or men not being used.

War is a business. If a reason for war does not exist--I''m sure we will manufacture a reason, after all, we did that in Iraq. So we''ve had practice.

These marines who want out of Iraq must be those "phoney soldiers" Rush Limbaugh talked about.
Any soldier who doesn''t agree with Rush, Hannity and Coulter are just phoney soldiers anyway, so there''s no sense paying any attention to what they say.

This is a move to cover the fact that Afganistan is lost. By all accounts, the Taliban is surging back to former strength and will overrun US forces if something is not done SOON and that means the next 2 months.

The situation in Afganistan is critical. You watch, those forces that are suppose to come home in Dec will be sent to Afganistan.

70% of the US Population wants us to get OUT OF IRAQ. But the neocons and Bushies said we aren''t being "patriotic" to say that. Now the US MARINES want to GET OUT OF IRAQ. Does the US Marine Corps HATE America?

Maybe the truth is that the "war on Iraq" has NOT made us any safer and it has, as the US State Department has said, "acted as a recruiting tool for Al Qaeda" and "created a training ground for terrorists". Little Gee Whiz Bush, the "Great Decider" has played right into the hands of Al Qaeda. Bush is a traitor to the US Constitution and to the people of the United States of America. Bush is the Enemy of Democracy and the Enemy of Freedom.

NeoCons and their supporters and apologists are the enemies of everything that once made America great. Fortunately, they are in the minority. But they have the support of all 3 branches of government, the Fourth Estate (which they disingenuously refer to as "the liberal media") and the puppet master who claims to be above and beyond it all, RichardHead Cheney. Will we let them continue their delusional mission and nuke Iran, plunging us into Global Thermonuclear war (a.k.a. "H-e-l-l")?

Let''s not just HOPE they show restraint. Let''s kick the madmen out of office before they do any more harm. Impeach Cheney and Bush NOW!

    tuckerndfw,

The "insurgents" in Afghanisatn are the former state-sponsers of Al Quaeda who would do it again if given the opportunity.

The operation in Afghanistan is about protecting Americans so that we might be free to enjoy our Constitutional rights.

Afghanistan is a so far successful operation which could still be squandered; Afghanistan is where a surge of troops is most appropriate.

    clestes,

So long as the Taliban is not controlling the government in Kabul Afghanistan is not lost but you are correct in pointing out that it will be if we
don''t bolster our forces on the real battlefield against the Jihadists.

    superchez1,

The Great Emperor Bush II is dismayed that the Marine corp wants to deploy to Afghanistan and leave Iraq to the Army to "pacify". That a Marine Commndant would question the military wisdom(???) of the Emperor and not "stay the course" is unprecedented and regarded by that great military analyst, Rush Limbaugh, as "phoney" (Apparently no one has told Limbaugh to NEVER call a marine PHONEY)!

Actually, when one thinks on it, it makes perfect sense. In all prior wars, the marines would be the first to go in and destroy resistance (and take the casualties) and secure the area, then move on to another fight, leaving the occupation and the "winning of the hearts and minds" to the Army.

However, as Limbaugh is quick to point out, the policies of the old are dead and the new order is here. Apparently, Limbaugh and others have been listening intently to the speeches of such great Nazi thinkers as Josef Goebbels and Rudolf Hess.

HAIL TO THE MILITARY "WISDOM" OF EMPEROR BUSH II, VP DARTH VADER CHENEY, AND RUSH LIMBAUGH!!!

    SIG HEIL, BUSH!!!

===The Great Emperor Bush II is dismayed that the Marine corp wants to deploy to Afghanistan and leave Iraq to the Army to "pacify".===

What? Nowwhere in this article is it said that Bush is dismayed or even disagrees with this. You are delusional.

==="That a Marine Commndant would question the military wisdom(???) of the Emperor and not "stay the course" is unprecedented and regarded by that great military analyst, Rush Limbaugh, as "phoney" (Apparently no one has told Limbaugh to NEVER call a marine PHONEY)!"===

Again, nothing in this article supports any of what you just said. And it''s obvious you are only repeating what someone else said about the "phony soldier" story. Don''t embarrass yourself.

===Actually, when one thinks on it, it makes perfect sense. In all prior wars, the marines would be the first to go in and destroy resistance (and take the casualties) and secure the area, then move on to another fight, leaving the occupation and the "winning of the hearts and minds" to the Army.===

This is true, and is exactly what is being done. But why is this considered a bad thing, and an obvious statement by the Marines that they think things are going so well that they want to focus on Afghanistan? The Marines have NEVER backed down from a fight, so the idea that they "want out" is ridiculous, and wishful thinking by you idiots.

Huh? What part of "The Marine Corps is pushing to redeploy its forces from Iraq to Afghanistan to take the lead in combat operations there and essentially leave Iraq to the Army" do you not understand? Sounds like an accurate headline to me. And pretty much everyone else who reads the story.

So would you agree that Obama and Hillary "want out" of the Senate because it''s been such a failure?

Democracy is only a glorified "mob mentality." It''''s not really a government at all. Karl Marx was correct in stating that if it was attempted, it would become the most corrupt system on earth and likely the destruction of us all.

Marx had a good idea, his only problem was that His form of government would be run by human beings and that right there spelled doom. Next to that a market economy guided by a replaceable governmental structure or visa-versa (aint sure on that)is the next best thing. Take the human equation out of it and Marx was right.

"Army and Pentagon leaders have warned repeatedly that the long, deadly and repeated deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan have stretched and stressed the Army, its soldiers and its families nearly to the breaking point."

A small price to pay to protect the reputation of George W*anker Bush, and help him save face -- that''s the important thing.
