Could Nobel Prize Spur Gore To Run In '08?

Awards for the world's best in science, economics, literature and peacemaking.

(CBS)  This story was written by CBSNews.com political reporter Brian Montopoli.

The Nobel Peace Prize, which will be announced Friday in Oslo, Norway, doesn't normally play a significant role in U.S. presidential politics.

But the possibility that former Vice President Al Gore might take the prize has some Gore supporters buzzing that the 2000 Democratic Party nominee for president might be convinced to take the plunge once again.

Gore and Canadian Inuit activist Sheila Watt-Cloutier, who were jointly nominated for the prize for their work on climate change, have been identified as likely winners by Nobel handicappers. If they win, Gore supporters say, it could spur the former vice president to make a late entry into the presidential race.

"Winning a Nobel Peace Prize is a life changing event," said Dylan Malone, who runs a Web site called AlGore.org, which advocates a Gore presidential run. "If he wins (the Nobel), he will undoubtedly reassess the situation and think, 'Where do I go next?' He's done the slideshow, made the movie, won every accolade that our society has to give. There's nowhere else to go to take it to the next level in my mind."

On Wednesday, the Web site Draft Gore paid for a full-page open letter to Gore in the New York Times. "You say you have fallen out of love with politics, and you have every reason to feel that way," reads the letter. "But we know you have not fallen out of love with your country. And your country needs you now -- as do your party and the planet you are fighting so hard to save."

The ad said that 136,000 people have signed a petition asking Gore to run for president.

According to Gore spokesperson Kalee Kreider, the former vice president "has no intention of running."

"Vice President Gore truly appreciates the sentiment and the feeling behind the ad (yesterday), but as a private citizen his efforts are going behind a campaign of a different kind," said Kreider. "The vast majority of his energy right now is going into educating people about the climate crisis and trying to get that issue to a tipping point."

That sentiment hasn't stopped Gore partisans. Peter Ryder, who is organizing a rally and concert in Iowa urging Gore to run, acknowledges that his efforts at times seem quixotic. Still, he says, "When I go around just talking to people, they all say, 'Oh my goodness, if Gore was running, there would be no question I'd support him.' If he got in, I think he would attract a great many Democrats."

According to recent CBS News polls, Gore remains popular among Democratic primary voters. In a poll conducted this summer, 55 percent of likely Democratic primary voters said they viewed the former vice president favorably, while only 20 percent had an unfavorable view. In April, a CBS News poll found that 35 percent of Americans believe Gore's positions go too far in protecting the environment at the expense of economic concerns, while 48 percent believe he strikes the right balance. (Read more CBS News poll analysis on Gore.)

Even Gore's staunchest supporters admit that with the first presidential primaries likely to be held in less than three months, time is running out for a late entry to the race.

"Because of his incredible appeal and his name recognition, he still has time, but the window of opportunity is closing pretty quickly," said Draft Gore founder Monica Friedlander. "The registration deadlines are closing for primaries. After the beginning of next month, it's going to be very difficult."

Gore explicitly ruled out running in 2004, something he has not done this time around. But while the politician-turned-filmmaker has passionate supporters, most Democratic primary voters -- 67 percent in a CBS News poll taken in August -- said they are happy with the selection of candidates now in the race. If Gore does decide to enter, he faces an uphill battle: Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama alone have raised around $80 million each since the beginning of the year, and all of his potential rivals have been campaigning, advertising and debating for months.

"There are genuine practical considerations at play here," said Democratic strategist and former Gore aide Chris Lehane. "One, the ability to get on a ballot in all these states with a small window of opportunity to accomplish that. Secondly, to put together a campaign and raise money in a very short time. Most of the activists and key players are already aligned with campaigns. These aren't impossible impediments, but they are significant."

Democratic strategist and longtime Gore adviser Michael Feldman, who is not working on a presidential campaign, said he doesn't see Gore jumping in the race.

"Everything he's said publicly and privately indicates that he's not planning a campaign," said Feldman.

That's a sentiment echoed by Carter Eskew, chief strategist for the Gore 2000 presidential campaign.

If Gore wins the Nobel Prize, Eskew said, "I think it will certainly increase efforts like you saw in the paper, but I really don't think it'll have any impact on him at all. I think he's on a different path right now."

But Gore supporters are holding out hope.

"A lot of people are sacrificing a lot," said Draft Gore founder Friedlander. "People are donating to this cause who can't afford to donate. But we believe very strongly he is very, very desperately needed. This is not a campaign of people who think he's a great guy. This is not about him. It's about the country."

MUST WE ENDURE THE SECOND COMING OF THIS LOON''S REINCARNATION TO VINDICATE THE CHAD FIASCO? DO WE NEED TO HONOR THIS FATHER OF THE INTERNET AND THE FATHER OF GLOBAL-WARMING-AS-TERROR? CAN WE JUST STOP WAXING NOSTALGIC FOR THE LIKES OF THESE CRAZIES? HAS AMERICA LOST IT''S VISION THAT IT CAN ONLY LOOK BACKWARD INTO WHAT INEVITABLY WOULD HAVE AND NOW HAS THE POTENTIAL TO DESTROY US WITH THESE HAS BEENS? GO AWAY AL BORE. This is the second generation step-and-fetch for Communist agent-of-influence Armand Hammer. Gore is now connected by his offspring''s marriage into one of the New York banking families that financed the Bolshevik Revolution.

This scum bag peddles man-caused global warming with a bag of cherry-picked information. Warming has been documented on bodies throughout the solar system by NASA--no SUVs anywhere, yet Earth suddenly stands out as having this cyclic warming classified as man-cuased. When the Vikings were growing grain in Greenland hundreds of years ago...no one has stepped forward to cast blame on them or any other humans alive at the time for the earth changes that made this possible.

Glaciers are melting and speeding toward us! Molines are forming by the thousands! Well, yes. The world is changing...Humans adapt...we need to think about adapting to the change...not fighting to maintain a static way of life...and, there is always that sudden cold snap and pre-historic critters flash frozen with fresh vegetation in their mouths...think a carbon tax will prevent that?

On Wednesday 10th in a UK court a judge ruled that the Al Gore film "An Inconvenient Truth" was not suitable to be viewed in schools and should be accompanied by truthful comment. The Judge stated that the facts stated in film were unproven and sensational, a total exaggeration and by no means confirmed by the scientific community.

Since when were Nobel prizes given to producers of fiction, this judge was quite correct preventing kids having their heads filled with total rubbish.

The whole concept is a massive scam designed to impose restrictions upon the developing nations, thus bringing them into line on pricing and competition with the Corporate Criminals. If he does run for the White House you can bet Rockefeller will put him there.

I never thought the Nobel prize committee would stoop so low. America is not the only low aim establishment. The entertainment industry is so socialistic, Gore would have won a prize if he had done a commercial for Preparation " H ", but the Nobel Peace Prize for a dimwit like him ...unbelievable. Lefties are not trustable .

This award has really gone down the sh*tter. Look at past winners for godsake: A corrupt leader of the UN, the worst president in US history, and a terrorist leader (Arafat).

Why not General Petraeus for the Nobel Peace Prize? The surge has dramatically reduced violence and deaths across entire regions of Iraq, and Baghdad, during 2007. He''s certainly protected more lives, both American and Iraqi, than Al Gore.

All these Gore-haters are symptomatic for the "American A**hole" phenomenon. They have become so isolated and desperate that they attack the messenger because they can''t attack the message. Everyone in the world gets it except those few morons here in the U.S. They are also desperate because every day, a new failure of the Bush administration and the people who "think" like it becomes evident. I would say "wake up" but there is no hope for the morons who wrote the anti-Gore messages on this board.

Al Gore is 100 times the leader that Bush 43 is. We have been living under the "leadership" of a moron who may someday be nominated for the GOP "Death Prize", as he has presided over the deaths of hundreds of thousands since being elected Governor of Texas. It will take more than Al Gore to undo the damage that the Fuhrer has inflicted in the past 7 years.

Come on, think about it - what''s worse four years of Gore the bore droning on about God knows what, or four years of Hilary''s cackle and her reptilian political calculating? Go Al go, bore us to death.

Al Gore always was a reluctant politician, only following his father''s family plan, but only half heartedly. His refusal to sponsor the investigation of voter fraud that cost an election that he actually won, gave us Bush and the illegal wars, not to mention wasted millions of dollars spent on the campaign.

Keep up the good fight for the environment Al, you are making more headway where you are.

Because he failed to fight for what the American people wanted then, I have no confidence he will be able to fight the now firmly entrenched forces of corruption and death that have taken over the government.

Neither will Hillary, but more fascism, combined with racial and religious intolerance that is currently disguised as Republicanism is not an option, if the country is to survive.

There''s a reason (or many) why people in Al Gore''s "home state" don''t vote for him. The Democrats may want him to run, but he has enough baggage that it would become another futile gesture. Sure, younger voters are charmed by his work on the environment, but those of us who remember him as VP aren''t. China scandal, anyone?

I respect his choice to continue on the path that he is on. The government is in such shambles that it wrong to think that Gore could fix it. It would simply divert his energies toward a situation that is close to hopeless. At least he is accomplishing something in his quest to increase awareness of global warming.

When I hear the continuing drumbeat of Reich Wing zealots who are now advocating for preemptive strikes against Iran, it confirms my fears that the asylum has truly been overtaken by the lunatics.

If Gore entered the race, even with no money--I think he''d take the nomination. I''m not sure if America is ready for a woman even now--we try to pretend we progressed, but really we regressed in many ways. we are more racist/bigoted, more sexist and more intolerant than we have been in a very long time. On top of that--the beast is out of the closet, with the sadists and pragmatic among us embracing torture, desruction of the Constitution and illegal wars, while the perverted among us truly expect Iraqis to help us win the war in Iraq and want them to be grateful for our invasion and the resultant horrors unleashed by our interference in their country. Now that, takes a lot of perversion. NO invader/occupier is a hero. And no freedom starts with people who will die being given no choices.

But on to the point: Hilary is divisive and perhaps just a tad too socialistic and free with our money. (I don''t need taxes raised for years to pay for a 1000.00 cookie--for people who don''t or won''t save) the cost of her giveaways will be far more than the money she gave out--and guess what? It probably would never go away even after the debt was paid.

No. I don''t think we are really ready for a woman or a black President. We may be older as a country--but tolerance and world view wise--we are the same as many in the generations before us--xenophobic, ethnocentric, racist and yes---gender biased.

If Gore ran, He''d get my vote in a heartbeat.

No argument here, but he won the last time he ran, but didn''t fight for his victory when the Nazis threw up their one last "hanging chad" trick.

Should they repeat the voter fraud trick again, I have doubts as to whether Gore would fight, then we have to try to survive another four years of Nazi rule, which would be devastating, if not fatal.

No mention of Dennis Kucinich today--he said he would have a real 9-11 investigation and an investigation into the nuclear missile episode that was revealed at Barksdale AFB. He also said he would turn Bush and the other leading criminals in his administration over to law enforcement authorites. Little wonder that Bush is trying to work forgiveness for himself into bills before Congress.

Gore is the same swine we knew and despised through eight years of Clinton and through the 2000 election cycle....the worm who folded like a cheap suit when Bush stole Florida.

..."doubts as to whether Gore would fight" Posted by brianbwb at 10:48 AM : Oct 11, 2007

Respectfully, one must take the higher ground on what Al did in that scenerio. He was trying not to punish the American people by fighting past the point of idiocy, which is not a stance the Bush team took. They WERE willing to fight past the point of idiocy, and this country''s people weren''t going to stomach it.

Al, when he ceded to Bush, was actually showing his best face and as horrified as I was at the time by the stench of our electoral process, I was very proud of Al.

Who at that time was to know what Bush would turn out be be, or the damage he would do, not even Al. If Al had known, if anyone of us had known what Bush''s intentions for the White House truly were, Al would have fought Bush as far as possible. I have faith in that. But Bush hid his real self behind Christianity and false promises and through those means, got the White House.

Al isn''t perfect, but he is not what Bush has repeatedly shown himself to be, a man with limited and very elitist vision. Al looks to the future and sees far more in humanity and this planet than how to rearrange the world to suit himself. :)
