Suspended Student Injures 5 Before Killing Himself

Students stood outside the building, many in tears, hugging one another and on cell phones. Others shouted at reporters with TV cameras to leave them alone. Family members also stood outside, waiting for their children to be released.

Math teacher David Kachadourian, 57, was in good condition; Michael Grassie, a 42-year-old teacher, was in surgery, but his condition was unavailable. The other two injured teens were taken to a children's hospital, which would not release their names, ages or conditions.

Deberry's mother, Lakisha Deberry, said she was upset that metal detectors at the school were not always in use.

“You never know what's going on in someone's mind,” said Deberry, adding that she was required to go through a metal detector and present an identification card whenever she wanted to drop off something at school for her children.

The shooting occurred across the street from the FBI office in downtown Cleveland, and students were being sent to the FBI site.

Classes at all schools in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District will be canceled Thursday, said Eugene Sanders, chief executive officer of the district. Counseling will be available Thursday for students at recreation centers throughout the city, Sanders said.

SuccessTech Academy is an alternative high school in the public school district that stresses technology and entrepreneurship. It is housed on several floors of the district's downtown Cleveland Lakeside Avenue administration building.

“It's a shining beacon for the Cleveland Metropolitan School system,” said John Zitzner, founder and president of E City Cleveland, a nonprofit group aimed at teaching business skills to inner-city teens. “It's orderly, it's disciplined, it's calm, it's focused.”

The school has about 240 mainly black students with a small number of white and Hispanic students.

Coon was white and Henderson, the student who said she frequently argued with him, is black, but she said she didn't believe race played a role in the shootings.

The school, opened five years ago, ranks in the middle of the state's ratings for student performance. Its graduation rate is 94 percent, well above the district's rate of 55 percent.

I find it unbelievable how you could talk about giving guns to teachers or hitting kids like this.I will agree that today''s youth is very unstable and wild.Who''s to say if it''s the fault of parents, or of media, or of something else that might influence our youth.Adding to these problems by giving stressed out teachers guns or having military or police as supervisors would only create an even more tense environment.

If teachers or staff would pay attention to the signs more that could help a bit.

I believe that it is getting tougher to grow up in todays society. There are more things/problems/situations making our children to lose their way. Making them unable to cope and adjust. And I am sorry to say, I don''t believe it is going to get better. As all these(things/problems/situations) progress and intensify, so does our youths anger and frustration.

I wish someone out there agreed with me. As parents we aren''t 100% responsible for our children''s actions but we can try and teach them to respect others and have regard for human life. I think the children who are taught at an early age stand a better chance than those ignored and not disciplined, those allowed to read bomb making books and have a cache of assault weapons.Those allowed to skip school and sell drugs. I am being knocked for trying to raise males that the world won''t fear. YOU are missing my point. I still think it starts at home and it''s all races involved. Parents have to get more involved with their children while they are young. I am talking about staying in tune with them watching observing etc. Know what your child IS or IS not doing. I only brought up race because we seem to focus more on black males at times when a lot of young teens of all races are violent. I said all youths are in need someone positive to train them and that so many parents are no longer involved and so many teens do not go to school any learn anything positive. They seem to run the streets and internet sites instead of school. No civil rights or gay rights etc. have anything to do with youth being violent. If he is mentally ill how could he plan this. I have seen TV shows that look real but and I say but they are not real. The music is trash that they like. I came from a broken home. Foster mother would NOT give us what ever we wanted. No sah. We could not dress,do as we please. Youths of all races are putting us at risk and that the parents have to step up and tune into what their children are doing or about to do. I wouldn''t ever see them with weapons or large sums of money and think it was okay. I cannot believe the Superintendent of the school district reacted the way he did when the student said they told the principal about the worry they had about this kid. He didn''t seem too worried about taking any type of action against this principal, because she is too busy she could not talk to these students, and all the superintendant could say is he will look more into it. Well excuse me, but if the students mean all that much too the school district, I believe the superintendent should be mad enough in this case to suspend the principal until all investigation is taken care of and to make sure that she puts all the students care first before all other problems, isn''t that what being a principal is all about.
