Three men were charged Monday in the fatal campus shooting of a University of Memphis football player, authorities said.
Taylor Bradford, 21, was shot Sept. 30 shortly before police found him fatally wounded in his car, which had crashed into a tree.
Memphis Police Director Larry Godwin said that the attackers intended to rob Bradford, but apparently did not get what they had come for. He declined to elaborate.
"The investigation is ongoing, and we do expect additional arrests," Godwin said.
Police said last week that one of the leads they were following was whether Bradford had won a few thousand dollars at a Mississippi casino the night before he was killed.
The three Memphis men, who are not students at the university, were identified as DaeShawn Tate, 21; Victor Trezevant, 21; and Courtney Washington, 22. All three were in police custody.
All three face the possibility of life in prison or even the death penalty, reports CBS affiliate WREG. Police are still looking for more suspects, possibly students.
After the shooting, university officials told students, faculty and staff that the suspects had fled the campus, but the school canceled classes as a precaution.
Bradford, a Nashville native who transferred to Memphis from Samford University, was buried over the weekend.

The life expectancy for young black males is much lower than the national average 25/79 and this should be unacceptable to blacks..
Certainly many whites posting on this story see this as an opportunity to sarcastically take pot shots at blacks, but black folks need to see beyond their "childish" collective consciousnesses and tackle this "disease" plaguing black communities.
The "Black Judas Syndrome" is real and stems back to African ideology, of which "African on African" brutality has existed for centuries...
Black folks need to recognize this misanthropic African ideology that fosters black self-genocide and purge their communities of this behavior and the people that support black self-genocide.
These criminal and amoral actions/behavior is[are] not going to stop on its own, and certainly white folks aren''t going to fix this problem as you can see many are "please as peaches" to see black folks murdering each other...
It is time black folks wake up and acknowledge the "Black Judas Syndrome" and start a campaign for unity within black communities and sanction those black folks that buttress black genocide...
I think Josie was commenting on the second picture -- the one of the gentleman in an open casket at his funeral.
I agree that it was a little more that we needed to see.

This would be all the GOP white NRA members.
You may, or may not, have the "right" to have a gun, but this country would be much better off if everyone decided NOT to get one.
The NRA management are GUN DEALERS. They don''t care about you, or me, or anybody else. They just want to make money selling lots of guns to lots and lots of paranoid, stu-pid people. Your safety is not their concern.
