A Deeper Look Into Blackwater

Bob Orr Examines The Workings Of The Controversial Security Company

  • In The Spotlight Under Fire

A look at Blackwater USA, the State Department's top private security contractor.

  • Interactive Battle For Iraq

The government, the insurgency, key players, background and photos.

(CBS)  Blackwater's version of coming attractions is shown in an action-packed promotional tape that makes it clear Blackwater has the guns and grit to tackle the toughest problems.

The North Carolina-based private security firm makes millions training police swat teams and military sharpshooters with courses like "Tactical Pistol II," "Extreme Officer Survival” and "Helicopter Sniper.”

But it's the war in Iraq that has been Blackwater's biggest bonanza, CBS News correspondent Bob Orr reports.

Since 2003, U.S. taxpayers have paid Blackwater more than $1 billion in protection money - most of it to guard diplomats, ambassadors, and dignitaries in Iraq.

Blackwater boss, former Navy seal Erik Prince, points to his company's perfect protection record. No client has ever been killed.

"We have never had anyone seriously injured," he said.

But, Blackwater, made up primarily of ex-military commandos, has lost 27 of its own, and now faces multiple investigations into last month's killings of 17 Iraqi civilians.

Prince's critics paint him as a profiteering mercenary, who's landed lucrative no-bid contracts from political cronies inside the Bush Administration.

He was a White House intern during the Presidency of the first George Bush, and since he founded Blackwater a decade ago, he's donated $222,000 to political causes - all but $5,000 to Republicans.

“Blackwater is not a partisan company; we haven't done any, you know, we execute the mission given us,” Prince said.

Couric & Co. Blog: Who Are These Guys?
Some on Capitol Hill want Blackwater to be reined in. But, Jeremy Scahill, who wrote a book on the rise of Blackwater, says it's doing the jobs an already-stretched military can't handle.

"It's become one of the most powerful private actors in the so-called war on terror," Scahill said.

As one private security source put it, Blackwater, despite any misdeeds, seems to be untouchable - a controversial protection force that may be impossible to replace.

What''s next, doing the job the overstretched police, prison system, or border guards can''t do? How about school security guards? Why not turn the entire public safety function over to a crony private contractor with a fundamentalist Nazi mentality? Best argument I''ve seen yet for keeping our Second Amendment rights intact.

If the private sector is better and more efficient why does it need the U.S. taxpayer to subsidize it?

Just because somebody provides an irreplaceable service does not mean they cannot be held accountable - if their actions are causing ill-will rather than winning over ''hearts'' and ''minds'' then in the big picture even their sugar daddies will have a need to rein them in now that their ''misdeeds'' have come to light.

Maybe charging these nuts with murder would be a good start . . .

The argument that despite its misdeeds, Blackwater seems untouchable sounds a lot like the thin excuse the Nazis gave when the Brownshirt Storm Troopers beat people up for not thinking their way, or for being Jews, Slavs, Gypsies, or any other "non-Aryan".

The facist state is alive and well in the new USSA!

what does this say about the US military, which costs us some $500 billion a year, if the politicians themselves can''t even trust our soldiers to protect them. Is the US Army a joke? When have we had enough mocking of our soldiers, when do we begin to presecute and condemn these private jet, private army, but public money slime that are runing our nation. The guns need to be pointed at our enemy, the rich, the Bin Ladens, and the other rich. Bin Laden, a rich man, attacked us. we must take it out of them to the last drop of their dirty filthy blood.

I agree. It is ridiculous that so much money goes into training our armed forces, yet our politicians think they aren''t even up to the job of providing personal security?! It''s a travesty! If they need more regular soldiers to perform these missions, then maybe we have to reinstate the draft, but there is no way we should be hiring mercenaries to do it-- especially if these mercenaries are under the impression that they are above the law!

Stop US Blackwater Civilian-Killing TERRORISTS

9-11 was a premeditated attack on innocent civilians

So was the Bush/Cheney Shock and Awe bombing of Iraq!

Bush and Cheney LIED about WMDs - Saddam told the truth

So WHY does the Corporate Media not mention the fact that Bush/Cheney started a needless, horrific imperial WAR based on LIES!!

Is Bush/Cheney, whose invasion-based-on-lies has killed hundreds of thousands, any less of a terrorist murderer than Osama Bin Laden?? Sure, they are all fundamentalist war-mongering, fear-mongering, vengeful, hateful killers -- but Bush/Cheney are OUR killers, and we have a duty to JAIL them for their CRIMES. We should pursue Osama (something Bush decided was less important than Iraqi Oil), but we should also need to bring CHeney/Bush to Justice.

Our murderous thug war-mongering leaders are no better than their murderous thug fanatics.

Erik Prince interned under the first Bush and learned that wars can make billions of dollars the first time we invaded Iraq. So, he started up Blackwater and donated lots of money to get Bush 2 elected. Now Bush 2 gets tons of money for his oil buddies and hires Blackwater with our tax money and no bid contracts worth billions. That''s what fascism is; it is all about corporations using people to make money. Kick these fascists out.

You arrest legal Costitutional Militias, but an illegal private corporate military is just fine?

So if private outfits are legal to have any military weapons, then Hizb''Allah and Hamas should be perfectly legal too.

In most cases, the private sector is more efficient than the private sector, which is plagued by bureaucratic tendencies. There is a plethora of studies that demonstrate that "contracting out" in the end gives the taxpayers more bang for their buck.

In regard to Blackwater, it would be asinine to prejudge the incident in Iraq that brought this on and almost criminal to smear all Blackwater staff and employees, many of which have served their country well before retiring to become contractors. Think about that before you label them "Nazis" or "mercenaries." What did they do to deserve your spew?

Blackwater and company are performing a vital service in Iraq. Without them, the number of soldiers needed to secure the country would have to double. In order to do that, we would need to reinstate the draft. If we reinstated the draft, people might stop watching reality TV and Howie Mandell''s bald head long enough to notice there is a war on. Then where would we be? If anyone actually paid attention for five minutes, they would demand a change, and our fun little war would be over, and all us rich Republicans would be forced to face the music for what we have done for the last six years.

No, thank you! I like things the way they are. It''s 2007, do you know where you $500 billion are? No? Good!

In order to- Falsely and Fraudulently - Advocate a War ! !

It was Condoleezza Rice and Cheney - Who delivered Oil Exploration contracts to - Iran - So to give American Oil Companies - Oil Exploration Rights in Iran - Iran refused to sign the contract

The only job description of : Condoleezza Rice and Blackwater will be

There was a time - Treason - Conflict of Interest - Corruption was a Criminal Act

Blackwater could have never succeeded without the complete Support - Authorization and Protection issued by : Justice Department and the FBI

So what''s worse, being in a country invaded by Bush''s war machine, or being one of this country''s worker drones slowly slipping into debt while paying taxes to pay for the war?

We''re fighting them there, so we don''t have to fight them here. If we leave, they''ll follow us home. There''s an easy way to prevent those scenarios: Seal our borders now!! I just finished reading a book by Sylvia Browne called Secret Societies and how They affect Our Lives Today. In the book, a society called Skull and Bones is talked about. S&B is said to have a room dedicated to the Nazis of WWII. It is also supposed to be the American off-shoot of another Society called the Illuminati. The Illuminati is referred to by the Author as the most vile of all secret societies. I found it quite interesting to learn that BOTH the Former President Bush and His Son, the Current President Bush are members of Skull & Bones. Is it really that hard to see the connection between the scam of the "War" in Iraq and the Scam of Blackwater (Bushs'' private Army)? We are being taken to the cleaners (Our Tax dollars, anyway) So the Bush(s) and Company can reap the rewards! I started My own website to spread the word about Corporate Misconduct which caused the death of My Father (Union Pacific Railroad) and then tried to widen the scope to include My thoughts on "Politicians". I think what people are failing to realize is that we are paying upwards of 1500 dollars a day to Blackwater per mercenary. We pay our common soldier a couple of hundred dollars, while subjecting him to constant scrutiny under the UCMJ. It''s sad that the common soldier is still worth so little in terms of real dollars. One reason there are so many mercs is to obscure the total manpower cost, thus avoiding politicaly sensitive military deaths. Another is the fabulous amount of money to be made thanks to L. Paul Bremer and his opening of the Iraq economy to wholesale financial rape.

The article is way too long.

All it needed to say is:

Blackwater boss Erik Prince was a White House intern during the Presidency of the first George Bush, and since he founded Blackwater a decade ago, he''s donated $217,000 to Republicans - Since 2003 (start of the war), U.S. taxpayers have paid Blackwater more than $1 billion in protection money - most of it to guard diplomats, ambassadors, and dignitaries in Iraq.

I thought the same until I realized that the "galloglass" or "mercenary warrior" is NOT subject to the same military law and ROE as military soldiers. This "war" has been raging for over four years and only recently have any Blackwater people been accused of killing civilians. You have to believe that they didn''t "just now" start killing civilians.

On the other hand, how many military personnel have been charged with killing civilians?

I think you get the picture. The "galloglass" only answers to the person he is charged with protecting. Until now he has been immune from any laws and ROE. And I''d be willing to bet that nothing changes...

Considering who the CinC is, the U.S. military is doing the very best job they could possibly do under the circumstances.

Fact: Sailors are being trained to fight alongside soldiers and Marines in Iraq. What does that say about our ability to take on Iran?

Oh yes it does!! There are many, many gang members in the military and they don''t give up their gang affiliation just because they are in the military.

The U.S. military, especially the Army, has been VERY desparate for recruits during the past four years. In fact, the gang members are using their "valuable" combat training to run their gangs when they get out of the military.

They are not SEALs or Marines once they join Blackwater. Likewise, they should be judged by their record, not the sentimental and faux patriotic appeals of Blackwater''s wealthy CEO, profiteering at taxpayer expense.

And while that CEO made out like a bandit, at least 122 of his employees did act as trigger-happy cowboys, requiring disciplinary action.

On a more serious note, I do wish somebody would publish just how much money has been spent on "private contractors" and compare that to what it would have cost to expand the military sufficiently to cover Rumsfeld''s strategic boners.

You know, like "$Y/$X", where $Y = the cost in contractors, and $X = the cost in full time, trust-worthy military personnel.

And, this is what is wrong with it. As Posted by w_synnott at 02:13 PM : Oct 06, 2007, we have always had mercenaries ~ but this is another breed of cat. This is an entire army kept by a private firm, a firm that has unrestricted power and access to our government''s inner circles. Because of this power and access, what is classified to Congress is accessible to these firms. Allowing these kinds of operations throughout our government by private entities has become an insidious creeping cancer on our society.

lankyjones says, "the surge is working".

Halleluyah! Thank God lankyjones has revealed the truth to us. (Never mind that the ONLY measure by which the surge is considered a success is the one they changed to redefine what is a "murder" or "sectarian violence" or "war death", based on the angle of entry of the bullet that did the killing. That''s REALLY as success story!

Now, please go tell all those dead Iraqis that "the surge is working" and they will all have Democracy real soon and Peace will once again reign in their country and they can, finally, crawl out of their uranium infested homes, and into the rubble of the streets to "welcome us as liberators"! But don''t tell them that we''re keeping their oil!
