District of Columbia police are investigating the Saturday night attack as a possible hate crime, Chief Cathy Lanier said. The incident began in the dorms of the Model Secondary School for the Deaf, on the campus of Gallaudet University.
Seven students - six white and one black - took part in holding the black student, Lanier said.
University officials would not say whether they had been disciplined, but in a campuswide e-mail Wednesday, Katherine Jankowski, dean of the center that includes the high school, said the seven were sent home.
The school discussed the incident at an assembly Monday and has worked with students on issues of diversity and race, said Stephen Weiner, provost of Gallaudet.
"We do not tolerate any kind of action, any kind of behavior of this type," Weiner said.
Lanier said the attack began when two groups of students, one white, one black, were "horsing around" in the dorms. The groups eventually separated, but the seven students took the black student and held him for about an hour.
The student who was held contacted Gallaudet authorities, who called police early Sunday. He is at home with his family, the provost said.
No charges have been filed, but police said they have identified all seven students involved; they range in age from 15 to 19. "We take it very seriously," Lanier said.
Gallaudet, the nation's only liberal arts university for deaf students, was founded in 1864 by an act of Congress. The university had about 1,800 students last year.

No. Racist groups have historically tried to find a willing member of the Race being attacked as a defense. It''s not unusual and in no way diverts the basis of the hatred of the group. This is but one more example of blantant racism that is bubbling just under the surface in this nation. We made a very bad mistake during the 60''s when we drove the slime underground. We did NOT do what we did in Germany with the Nazi''s there and we should have. This kind of thing doesn''t just go away.

When the seven students held the black kid for an hour against his will this is considered kidnapping
in Cook County, Las Vegas, will the seven students be charged for kidnapping by the police, my guess is no.
the student was held against his will for an hour. It is also an assult. just because there was no blood and a black kid was involved does not make it a prank.
Quick history lesson: Back when the white man went to africa to capture slaves, blacks were used to do alot of the capturing of the slaves. once they were back in america on the plantations, some blacks were put in charge of other blacks.
these types of things happen everyday in the land of the free.
Among the possible scenarios I can picture is one where a group of young people overreacted to a constant day in, day out bombardment of poli-speak about a different form of bigotry than what they were facing every single day of their lives and went "Enough Already!", performed the dirty deed, and walked way signing the closing line "There. Now you have something to rant about.".
Am I saying that is the right way to behave? No. But I know being forced to tolerate rants about intolerance can be wearing to those who have never practiced nor tolerated intolerance.
These kids thought they were *** around with each other, and often in groups they pick one out to harass. Sometimes it goes around, like first one kid, then the group goes after another in the group later.
They dont really mean anything serious, just a little testosterone coming out.
Now the fact that they did this with known racist hate symbology is a complicating factor. That shows the parents of some of these kids are either teaching or allowing their kids to see their personal beliefs that are both derogatory and racist.
Kids learn most of the hate they ever feel from their parents, or authority figures in their lives.
I think the parents need to be examined to an extent and find out where this is coming from.
Hypothetitically let''s say the victom is a white girl and six black boys and one other white girl was involved in urinating on the white girl, would this be considered a dumb prank and wonder if it was your own daughter who was the victom, is it still a dumb prank?

Since urinating on another is also considered a ***-act, it would probably be prosecuted as a rape or sexual-assault crime, don''t know about hate crime.

YOur remark is ridiculous. It is as dumb as saying a person married to a black or Hispanic or a black person married to a white cannot be racist. it may help you to know that in the times of slavery, blacks were often used as overseers and punished other blacks--even beating them to death. According to historic records, the blacks who were given the power to harm their own people--were often more ruthless and filled with a self hatred toward their own race. It would appear, that it is human nature to want to "please" the master if for no other reason than to protect oneself from being a target. Blacks were heard to call the other blacks names as they beat them --often outdoing their white counterparts in virulence. Sort of like what the character Benny said in the first "Mummy" movie: "Better to be the devil''s handmaiden than to be in the devil''s path"
The very fact that KKK was put on the child''s body indicates a hate crime--whether it was truly hatred or a nasty prank remains to be seen, but the participation of a black in a hate crime--even against their own race is not uncommon. There is no law that dictates a person of one race, cannot learn to hate others of his own race--simply due to race. It makes no sense--but then neither does racism.
What constitutes a hate crime? I am not sure in this case because the victim is black and one of the perpetrators is black. Looks like some horsing around went too far, nobody is dead or got beat senseless.
Studies have revealed that many Klan members have had african ancestry and some of the most rabid anti-gay politicans have been closet ***. Self loathing is a problem but, the fact that one of the perpetrators is black does not automatically justify this as merely a "prank."
