I interviewed Jenna Bush today for her book "Ana's Story: A Journey of Hope." Jenna took time out from teaching in a Washington-area charter school to work abroad for UNICEF. While there, she recorded the stories of some of the children that UNICEF helps in Latin America.
Among these children is Ana, a teenager whose parents both died from AIDS. Ana is HIV positive and, despite being an orphan, she is now a mother. This young woman is hopeful about her life and her future.
"Ana's Story" is inspiring stuff -- I read every word. While it is not news that people with AIDS face terrible struggles, I think it says something about the once-wild Bush twin that she felt compelled to share this story with a wider audience.
Proceeds from the sale of "Ana's Story" will go to UNICEF, and some of the money will go to help Ana.
I've been interviewing Bushes for more than 20 years. One can see glimpses of both her mother and father in the 25-year-old. Maybe a little of Barbara, too; charm … and fire.
