Ohio Legislator's Civics Lesson To High School Students Includes Photo Of Naked Woman

(AP)  An Ohio state legislator surprised a high school class when the computer he was using projected a photo of a nude woman during a lecture on how a bill becomes a law.

State Rep. Matthew Barrett was giving an American government lesson Tuesday when he inserted a data memory stick into the school computer and the projected image of a topless woman appeared instead of the graphics presentation he had downloaded.

Police interviewed Barrett and school officials and seized the data memory stick and the computer to determine where the image came from, a state highway patrol spokesman said.

Barrett said there were a few snickers from the approximately 20 students in the senior government class at Norwalk High School when the image appeared. He said he immediately pulled the memory stick out of the computer.

The legislator said he finished his lecture using printouts and then met with the school's principal and technology staff, who examined the stick. He said the school's technology director determined the stick had a directory of nude images in addition to Barrett's presentation on civics lessons.

"I have no idea where these came from," the Democrat said.

Barrett said the data memory stick was a gift he received about three weeks ago from a legislative liaison from the state Library of Ohio.

I don''t think a photo of a topless female rises to the level of "porn", unless you have some very bizarre set of values. Having said that, it''s very hard to believe he''s savvy enough to be using a flash drive and doing a presentation using a laptop, but wasn''t savvy enough to know what was on the drive.

A few decades ago I was in college and taking a short course on the use of audio-visual aids. A prof gave us the hint that if we were giving a public presentation using slides (yes, it was that long ago), that from the time we arrange the slides to the actual presentation, we should even sleep with the slide carousel to protect it from practical jokers. He added that a "friend" had inserted a questionable slide in one of his presentations and warned us about the risk. Using a used thumb drive could be just as dangerous - and why did the topless pic appear in the middle of the presentation anyway?
My first reaction was "Yeah, right" until I remembered my prof''s experience.

Matt Barrett is a first term Representative. He got the flash drive from a legislative aide. Most likely the aide forgot to erase his pictures from the drive. The flash drive and the teacher''s computer are now in the possession of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, which handles all investigations involving members of state government. So, we will await the outcome of the investigation, which certainly aroused so much interest that even CBS has to cover it.

I don''t usually watch movies, so please forgive me if I am wrong, but aren''t movies that show bare breasts rated R? If they are, then wouldn''t the police have to classify this as a "crime" since the high-schoolers are under 18 and those under cannot cannot attend an R rated movie without a guardian?

But that is how a bill becomes law. A lobbyist or some other power proposes it, some members of Congress get reminded of some embarrassing photographs, and Poof! Another Bill that benefits only the few becomes Law.

At least, that is the only reason I can figure for the radical change in John McCain between 2000 and now, or the pathetic kow-towing of Pelosi, or the seeming ineptitude of Reid.
