(CBS/AP)  Israel on Tuesday eased a strict news blackout on an air strike in Syria last month, allowing the first publication of reports it struck an unspecified "military target" deep inside Syrian territory.

However, the censor continued to bar publication of other key details, including the target of the raid, which forces participated in the mission and whether the operation was successful.

Foreign reports say Israel attacked a nuclear facility supplied by North Korea or a weapons shipment destined for Hezbollah guerrillas in Lebanon, reports CBS News correspondent Robert Berger. Syria denies that, saying Israel hit a vacant military building.

Israel's military censor had imposed a total blackout on coverage of the Sept. 6 air strike. But Tuesday, the office allowed preliminary details to be published after Syria's president, Bashar Assad, confirmed the air strike in a televised interview.

Journalists in Israel are required to submit articles related to security and military issues to the censor, which can make changes to stories or bar publication altogether. In a rare move, the censor's office issued a special directive about the Syrian air raid, specifically prohibiting publication of any details.

Violation of the censorship orders can result in the loss of press credentials or other sanctions.

In other developments:

  • Four Hamas police officers were killed and two wounded Tuesday when a car exploded outside a Hamas security headquarters building in Gaza City, hospital and security officials said. At first Hamas blamed Israel but later said it was unclear what caused the blast. The car exploded on the Gaza beachfront near the Hamas marine police force building.

  • Palestinian families celebrated Tuesday as Israel released another 29 security prisoners, bringing the two-day total to 86, reports Berger. It's a goodwill gesture to U.S.-backed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Israel wants to strengthen Abbas ahead of an international peace conference in the U.S. planned for November.

  • In another sign of warming ties, Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert will meet Wednesay.

  • Israeli troops killed two Hamas militants on Monday in a nighttime gun battle in the Gaza Strip, a Hamas official said. The Israeli military said troops shot two armed Palestinian militants who attacked troops inside Gaza not far from the border fence. One soldier was lightly wounded by gunfire, the military said.

The September attack has raised tensions, says Berger, but both sides say they do not want a war.

    Quote

Israeli air force planes attacked a military target deep inside Syria on Sept. 6, the military censor allowed for publication today.

    Israel's Army Radio
"Israeli air force planes attacked a military target deep inside Syria on Sept. 6, the military censor allowed for publication today," Israel's Army Radio reported. The headline on the Web site of the Maariv newspaper was, "Now it can be revealed: Israel attacked in Syria," while the Haaretz newspaper led with the military's permission to publish "the fact" of Israel's attack.

In an interview with the British Broadcasting Corp. Monday, Assad said Israeli warplanes attacked an "unused military building," the first time Syria officially acknowledged an air raid had taken place.

Previously, Syrian officials had said only that the Israeli warplanes entered the country's airspace, came under fire from anti-aircraft defenses, and dropped munitions and fuel tanks over northeastern Syria to lighten their loads while they fled.

    (AP)
Assad said the raid last month showed Israel's "visceral antipathy towards peace."

The release of the Gaza prisoners was held up for a day after Israel's military chief expressed reservations over the move. In the first stage of the release, Israel freed 57 prisoners to the West Bank on Monday.

The Gaza prisoners walked through the terminal at the Erez border crossing and were greeted by a large crowd of relatives (seen at left).

When ecstatic family members rushed toward the terminal, Israeli soldiers briefly opened fire, wounding two people, witnesses said.

    (Getty)
The army confirmed a large group approached the border, and it fired in the air, and then at people's legs, to disperse the crowd. The army said one person was wounded (left).

The prisoners were overwhelmingly members of Fatah, the moderate movement of President Mahmoud Abbas, which was routed by the Hamas militant group in June. The crowd sang Fatah songs and held yellow Fatah flags.

Security officials said military chief Lt. Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi sent President Shimon Peres, who must authorize sentence commutations, a letter saying it was "immoral" to release Gazans held by Israel while Hamas-linked militants in Gaza continue to hold Cpl. Gilad Shalit. Peres' office would not comment on the affair.

Militants linked to Hamas captured Shalit in June 2006 after they tunneled under a fence separating Gaza from Israel and attacked an Israeli army base. Two other soldiers were killed.

The release of Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails is for Palestinians key for reconciliation between the people since Israel holds about 11,000 prisoners, and many families have relatives held.

grazinggoat, Living in Australia puts our time line ahead of you guys in America, so while you are awake we sleep, thus answering what is said here is some what behind...

grazinggoat, all I can go by is what is written in Muslim holy books.. Where as, in the book of the Christians (which is the new testament) it says that Christians are not to kill, that they are to love even their enemies and to follow Jesus example, he is the big guy in Christianity and no where did he fight, kill or anything else, even Josephus (the historian) said that..The books of Hindi and Buddha are much the same..and even though many terrible things have been done in history by people who say that they are believers, no where even from Moses time does it say to kill..
Conversely, the last three quarters of the quran and other Muslim books constantly tell Muslims that when the time is right that they must kill all who will not submit...but it has to be when the time is right and in the lands of the infidel they do not have enough numbers YET to do this, but they are working on it, just as they said that they were doing in England with their large families, breeding an army..
Could you give me verses from the new testament which tell Christians to kill those who will not become Christians as I haven''t read all of it..and I can give you so many from the Muslim holy books..

tuckerndfw, Saudi Arabia does not constitute what all Muslims are like, "AT THE MOMENT''.. Perhaps the article below will show you what is happening, it only shows what they did to Jews,....

What all Arab nations have done to their Jewish population. The Arabs and Muslims stole everything the Jews had, and then either kicked them out or murdered them. Statistics of Jews in Arab Countries: Shocking - These stats were taken from "Myths and Facts" - a great book by Mitchell B. Bard. You can go to the internet link for this book at: http://standwithus.com/links.asp

First number is from the year 1948, the second number is taken from the year 2000:
    Algeria 140,000,................Less than 100
    Egypt 75,000,............................ 200
    Iran 100,000,................12,000 to 40,000
    Iraq 150,000,.............................100
    Lebanon 20,000,.......................... 100
    Libya 38,000,.............................. 0
    Morocco 265,000,........................5,800
    Syria 30,000,................ ............200
    Tunisia 105,000,........ ...............1,500
    Yemen 55,000,.............. ..............200
See a pattern???? and what do Muslims and Allah think of pagans/infidel, are we in for any better,,,,,hmmmm

BTW, I lived in Saudi Arabia so don''''''''t waste your time directing those "convert or die" posts towards me. No one ever inquired about my religion.

    Posted by tuckerndfw

-Well this explains it all! Finally tucker admits he''''s a muslim!

In Saudi Arabia you cannot even become a citizen unless you convert to islam. It is against the law to own a Bible in Saudi Arabia as well and a person can be imprisoned for being Christian.

-Tucker, SickRick just can''t believe it, that you lived there and no one has asked for your religion. You are becoming an uninteresting fellow because he''s living on controversial news and he likes the have to fight. He'' s a maniac-brained child, always looking for excitement originating from imaginary ennemies. If there are no ennemy he invents one or more and he fights them.

Nope!, the Shia and Sunni factions will never come to terms unless the Shia win, Then they will eliminate the Sunnis along with the western influenced countries n their effort to make the Planet Earth entirely ''Shia'' Muslim.

It is highly unlikely there will be a nuclear war in the Middle East since that would negate the reason for the war in the first place (to grab the oil).

Ya, I guess radioactive oil wouldn''t sell very well. I''m just so sick of the Middle East, can''t we just have a time out, everyone say we don''t care how we got here, but we have to start now to stop this maddness. If it could just be that simple.......

    Posted by lars008,

I think before the issues of the Middle East are settled, alot of people will have to decide which side they are on and get ready for World War III. I know that doesn''t sound very optimistic, but I don''t see it happening any other way, unless we want to keep on doing what we have been doing for the past 60 years for another 60 years.

Israel to Syria: Use chem weapons & we''ll wipe you off map

BY MATTHEW KALMAN in Jerusalem and BILL HUTCHINSON in New York
    DAILY NEWS WRITERS

    Thursday, September 20th 2007, 4:00 AM

Israeli officials vowed to wipe Syria off the map if it is attacked with chemical weapons like one that reportedly exploded in July at a secret Syrian base staffed with Iranian engineers.

Politicians in Israel said yesterday they were not picking a fight with their neighbor, but pledged to forcefully retaliate if chemical warheads come screaming across its shared border.

"We will not attack them first. But if they ever use these weapons against Israel, then we must be clear %u2014 it will be the end of this evil and brutal dictatorship," Yuval Steinitz, a right-wing member of the Israeli parliament, told the Daily News yesterday.

Ahmad Jibril, secretary-general of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, warned Thursday that if Israel attacked Syria or Hizbullah his organization would also respond.

In an interview with the al-Hadat newspaper, which is published in Arabic in the Galilee city of Tamra, Jibril warned that Israel planned to invade Syria in coordination with Arab countries. The interview is scheduled to be published Friday.

According to Jibril, if such an attack takes place, Iran and Hizbullah will stand by Damascus and respond in full force.

"I believe that the Israelis and the Americans will carry out attacks against Syria as soon as possible, in other words in the near future. I do not reject the possibility that the Israeli aircraft will attack us %u2013 the Palestinians in Syria.

and he would know since he never had a job,,, lol

"Most people who read "The Communist Manifesto" probably have no idea that it was written by a couple of young men who had never worked a day in their lives, and who nevertheless spoke boldly in the name of "the workers"." surfun Thomas Sowell (American Writer and Economist, b.1930)

in capitalism you reward the industious, the frugal, the peole willing to sacrifice,,,

in socialism/communism you reward the lazy, the spendthrift, the people not willing to make any sacrifices,,,

scialism/comunism is a ponzi scheme,,, a pyramid scheme,,, it is non sustainable,,, as more and more people become dependent on the state,,,

Named after Charles Ponzi, a man with a remarkable criminal career in the early 20th century, the term has been used to describe pyramid arrangements whereby an enterprise makes payments to investors from the proceeds of a later investment rather than from profits of the underlying business venture, as the investors expected, and gives investors the impression that a legitimate profit-making business or investment opportunity exists, where in fact it is a mere fiction.
