Britney Spears: In Deep Denial?

Critics Say She Doesn't Seem To Understand Gravity Of Situation

She shaved her head, went commando and drove with a baby in her lap. Here's a look at the recent antics of pop princess Britney Spears.

(CBS)  A court has ordered Britney Spears to give up custody of her two children beginning tomorrow.

A celebrity Web sites says that Sean Preston, 2, and Jayden James, 1, are already with her ex-husband, Kevin Federline, and were handed off yesterday as part of their regular shared custody agreement.

The court made its decision after a closed door hearing. All transcripts from that proceeding have been sealed, so the exact reason behind the decision is not known, but Court TV anchor Lisa Bloom said she wasn't surprised with the judge's decision because Spear's didn't follow what Bloom called "the first rule of litigation: Do not mess with the judge's order."

"I don't think the judge cares that much about her driving without a license, but he wanted her to sign up for parenting classes, go to drug counseling, random drug tests, even sign the order acknowledging she's supposed to do these things," Bloom told The Early Show co-anchor Harry Smith. "She didn't do it, and that was the last straw for the judge."

Lawyers for Federline couldn't be happier. But for Spears, 25, the ruling is a new low.

"Go back even just a week and a half ago, this court order came down where she had to undergo these random drug tests, we knew she had to meet with a parenting counselor, so you would have thought she was going to pull her act together and then that night we saw her out partying," Kim Serafin, senior editor at In Touch Weekly, told The Early Show national correspondent Hattie Kauffman.

Early Show contributor and assistant managing editor at People magazine Jess Cagle said it doesn't seem like Spears is aware of the gravity of the situation and is in deep denial.

"Even yesterday, after the order was handed down that she had temporarily lost custody of her children, she was out shopping and tanning and things like that," he said. "She did do one thing, which was she went to the DMV to take a driver's test so maybe she could get her license. She seemed to hear that."

2Questions about Spears parenting skills began almost as soon as she became a mother. She was photographed driving with Sean Preston on her lap and on another occasion, sitting in an improperly secured car seat. There was also a picture of Spears holding him while nearly losing her balance and dropping him. But the real downward spiral started after she filed for divorce in November 2006, and the all night partying began. On Feb. 16, she shaved her head and was soon in and out of rehab.

Photos: K-Fed Gets A Text Message
Early last week Spears took another huge hit in the court of public opinion. Her former bodyguard called her an unstable mother, who pranced around naked and abused drugs and alcohol.

She was also hit with a hit and run charge, and driving without a valid license. Then she was seen over the weekend driving without a license with her kids in the car.

"Britney has really tested everybody and this judge doesn't really care what the parents do he is looking out for the kids and I think he is getting to the point enough is enough," family law attorney Tina Schuchman said.

Spear's inner circle also seems to be dwindling. She lost the services of her attorney, Laura Wasser and her manager, Jeff Kwatinetz. She is estranged from her parents. One of her major problems, said "Insider" anchor Lara Spencer, is that she will not allow people in her life that question her behavior.

"If somebody tells her what she doesn't want to hear, then they're out," she said. "It's happened time and time again."

Her big chance at redemption came last month when Spears performed at MTV's VMAs, but even then, Spencer said, the singer wouldn't take expert advice.

"It was a perfect example of this, you know, systematic self-destruction," she said. "You know, she was out drinking and partying all night for two nights before going on. I mean, this is her -- you would think you would rehearse, you would be ready to go, you would listen to what the experts told you about what to wear. She didn't do any of that. Even down to her outfits. The MTV producers had a very ... chic bustier, elegant outfit and she said not sexy enough. She had a wonderful hairstylist who left because she wouldn't listen to him. She styled her own hair. She can't seem to make the right decisions."

Timeline: Britney's Meltdown
Jive, Spears' record label, has been very supportive, Cagle said, and her new album is due in November.

"But it does seem that she is intent on alienating herself," he said. "I think what you're seeing is this sort of delayed, very rebellious, rebellious adolescence that she never got to have and is now doing it."

While some question whether Federline is himself a worthy parent, Bloom says there is no choice but to grant him custody for now. The fact that the judge took such young children away from their mother shows how serious the situation is. The judge, who called Spears a habitual drug user, said the safety of the two boys is at stake.

"Judges want parents to succeed. If she straightens up and flies right, as you said, complies with all the laws and the orders and gets back on track, she can get those kids back," Bloom said. "It's possible, at this point, not probable, but possible."

Spears, clearly enjoys playing the child. She drove around this weekend, sucking on a pacifier and when she ran out of gas, a paparazzo stepped in to fill her up.

There will be another hearing. Custody arguments can go on for years -- and Spears is most likely paying Federline's attorney's fees.

Whatever else one can say about Federline, one thing I''ve NEVER seen said about him is that he''s not a good dad.

The fame has its goods & bads. I think she may be going thru a nervous breakdown that no one acknowledges to. She doesn%u2019t trust anyone at this point, therefore her decisions are hurting her in the long run. As a friend & fan I would tell her to seek counseling, that doesn''t mean she''s a bad person, Not to drive, it''s cool to have a driver to prevent trouble with the law, I would tell her its cool to party but party with limits. She''s beautiful, take care of her self, stop smoking so much its bad for your skin, get back on your feet, don''t hit rock bottom to turn back and wish you could do things differently. Put your kids in private schools and do all the fun things you can possibly do with them like if it would be your last time you would see them.

The boys are better off with their father.
His in-laws go to HIS house to see the kids so the family environment is there with him, not with Brit.
I do not think she is moved by this, she now has all of the time in the world to party and sleep without them around.
She also should be busted for driving without a seatbelt - I have not seen one photo with it strapped on.

Walking around naked in front of a 2 and 1 year old? What single parent does NOT do that? Get a flipping grip.

I agree about the custody order, as to the drugging and partying, but the aformentioned nudity? Puhleeze!

I wish everyone would quit judging Miss Spears. I am a single mother of 3, and do not go out and party every night, have to get up every morning get my kids ready for school and daycare and go to work, then at the end of the day pick them all up go home and work some more. It is a very routine life but rewarding and fulfilling. Britney has people around her to help her care for her children. But ultimately she is the MOTHER! She is a young woman who has been WORKING for a very long time and apparently surrounded by people who have enjoyed her $$$$ and success but couldn''t guide her and teach her. Those people should not be judging her. I don''t know the entire story only what is reported every night! Though I agree her mistakes are many, and maybe she is rebelling, but someone who truly loves this girl needs to step in and LOVE HER! Britney, you are not just a POP PRINCESS, you are not defined by your past or your fame. You are Shawn and Jaden''s mom. They will NEVER NEED anyone more, NOR WILL YOU!!!!! Be guided by your heart and love for your babies!!!!!

I thought Kevin was just after the money, but their is true thing here and their are 2 babies involved that was born in it. Britney is in denial and needs to snap outta of it. If she isn''t listening to anyone then she will regret it and another battle to get her children back. Standing in the background not doing nothing for her parents, Brother, Sister, family and ex-husband (who I think still loves her) needs to get involved by helping her. Regradless of what she doesn''t want.
Britney is at the deep end, depressed and doesn''t know what to do she needs help before other thoughts run in her mind. I really hope she snaps outta of it and get back on her feet. I just hope everybody who loves her are there with her.
Having her Mom being on Kevin''s side is hurting Britney and I don''t know her Mother knows it''s causing more pain for Brit.

I agree with the previous comment. Britney you are the Momma, and I don''t care what act Kevin is putting on; he is where he is because of you. He used you to get what he wanted and he has now taken the most precious part of you. Get him back girl...Don''t let him win he''s a snake. I understand completely your antics and rebellions because I''ve had to fight for what is already mine as well. I have a Kevin to and he is exactly the same. Fight Brit! you are so much stronger than he is...you''re a Momma and your babies need you just as much as you need them. It''s going to be ok. Much love.

It doesn''t matter how she was raised. Pop Princess or not doesn''t give her the excuse to be a bad mother. If she was just anyone on the street, you would probably shake your head at her. She needs to clean up her act. Either she needs to figure out how to balance being a pop star and a mother, stop partying and drinking and doing drugs. Or she needs to quit and focus on her children. They are her little treasures and deserve to be treated as such.

If Brit%u2019s little sister has any hope of sustaining a career in entertainment, she needs to completely abandon that dysfunctional trailer trash family, especially her mother.

To MILopez35 -- everyone is judging "Miss Spears" because she is acting in a judgmental fashion. Everything she does is about her -- not her ex and not her children. I think driving around with a pacifier in her mouth is the first step to an insane assylum. She obviously has some sort of mental problem. What it really boils down to is that she is a spoiled little brat who hasn''t grown up yet. How can a child raise children? She has to start acting like a grown up before she can be treated like one. She is being treated according to her actions. Right now, no one is to blame for Britney''s behavior except Britney!!!

She does need help. I just wish she would listen to the people that REALLY care about her. Never been a big fan, but I am a caring individual. This will either straighten her up, or defeat her. Someone needs to watch her though. I think she may try a suicide attempt. Just a feeling....

jfackrell1, you are talking as if you believe children are a form of property to which a mother is automatically entitled, no matter how imcompetent a mother she is. The difference between you and her is that you continue to fight for your kids. She will probably shrug it off and realize now that she does not have any kids depending on her, she is even more free to live outrageously.

The Early Show (as well as all the other network morning shows)devoted a ridiculous amount of air time to this dysfunctional family, yet they have indefinitely cancelled an appearance by Dawn Meehan. For those who don''t know her, she is the HILARIOUS mom of six who sold her kids'' Pokemon cards on eBay and who has WELL over 1 million views and perhaps as many dedicated readers of her blog. IMHO, she is Erma Bombeck...reincarnated!

The EARLY SHOW''s executives have foolishly missed a WONDERFUL opportunity to boost their 3rd position rating in network morning shows. I, for one, am SICK to DEATH of the media''s incessant coverage of this pitiful family''s plight. It''s a shame that the EARLY SHOW chooses to follow suit with the other networks and broadcast this garbage because, as a faithful TODAY SHOW viewer, I would have gladly jumped ship to watch Dawn''s segment (as would hundred of thousands of other fans) instead of being subjected to the continuing trailer-trash saga of Brit/K-Fed.

May God (and the family court system) help those kids!

Britney is not a child! When is a child a 25 year old woman? I was married and had my first baby when I was 25 and I had no problems caring for her. I think Britney has serious problems and her self-destruction has been witnessed this past year. It''s just sad those little boys were even around it. I can''t imagine how hectic and stressing their short lives have been with her as a mother. Britney has created her own problems and I don''t feel sorry for her. If those boys meant anything to her she would have done all that she could to keep them. Britney is just a self absorbed has-been performer and her children were paying the price. I hope K-Fed is going to step up and give them a more stable and safer life.

I am very happy how the judge ruled, but he also should be concerned of Britney driving with her kids without a licence.
That girl is going to kill someone or kill herself before this is over.
Everyone treats her like a child, which she is metally, but for heavens sake this woman is 25 years old and many of us have to be a grown up at that age and be responsible.
I hope Federline can make it to these little boys. They are the real victims.!!!!!

I''m not sure who I feel sorrier for, her kids, or the public. Her kids are with their dad - hopefully in a safe, sane environment. But the public is still in danger - albeit self-inflicted danger. For some reason we continue to watch (thus support) this lip-syncing talentless trollup. Remember what happened to Milli-Vanilli when it was discovered that they lip-synced? They were gone in 60 seconds. ANYONE can have a studio magician work voice-magic for them on a 96 track sound board. Singing well on stage is a true talent - one which BS (how appropriate) simply cannot deliver. Why do we allow her to get away with it? And her dancing (so to speak)...does anyone remember the "Elaine Dance" on Seinfeld? Elaine even dances better. Geeeesh, let''s religate her to the "Humorous Hog-pile of Hackneyed Hollywood Has-beens"! ''nuf said!

I agree with most that is said. Britney, Paris, Nicole and Lindsey are a product of their environment. Unfortunately, in all 4 cases, their parents, the entertainment injustry, news people and their fans, are also to blame for their behavior, because they all condone it. They act 4 years old because people enable them to act that age. I think all 4 should be behind bars for a very long time. They need to be treated like REAL people instead of misunderstood, misplaced, misbehaved child-stars. If Britney loses her children for good, then she has no one to blame but herself. But, I''m not sure K-Fed is the best thing either. Granted, he is probably the only stability those kids may have at this point, but there needs to be some serious intervention on behalf of those kids.

Britney and the other are washed up has beens.

And I agree that our news attention needs to be on something a little more important!!!

Anyone who would return children to their druggie, unsafe, nut of a mother is an idiot! Good thing the judge is not. Children aren''t property, if you don''t care for them and protect them, they should go to someone who will.

I think she needs to lose them permanently, until she''s been clean and sober and working and stable for a year.

I think the whole situation is a shame that a gold digger is now incustody of her two children. She loved this guy and unfortunately Britney has a good voice but is just a typical blonde Bimbo. She went and got pregnant not once but twice for a loser who was just after her money. I mean he abandoned his last girlfriend who had a kid for him
No wonder she is in despair and acting crazy as she loved blindly. Britney should try and face the reality of live and be strong.

It is a shame that we still have a lot of con men not just sucking the women for their money but trying to humilate them and break them down.

K-Fed does not care for the kids from my perspective but having custody of the kids guarantees him regular income. Just another gold digger who knew his strategy from day one when fortune made Britney crawl along his path. Everyone who cared about Britney tried to warn her but she ignored their warnings.

Now she is just a little girl embarrassed and confused at the reality of the truth. Maybe next time she will think twice before she starts the baby machine factory and be sure that this is a real decent guy who respects women and works and earns his own money.

Well, the "worm turns..." "Ya reap what you sow" what comes around goes around.....Britney had no qualms about breaking up the family K-Fed had with Char---so it only seems fitting that Brittany and Kevin broke up and then he became a performing laughing stock...then she became a performing laughing stock...now she loses her kids...the coup de grace would be if Kevin moved back in with Char, and Char ended up help raising Brittney''s kids. Talk about poetic justice.....

Char was 8 months pregnant with her 2nd child by Federline when she got the news that he was dumping her for Brittany. So Brittany figures deeply in that family break up--then after the 2nd child was born, Brittany played games to keep Char and Kevin''s kids from spending time together (or so the tabloids said) now--it looks like the shoe is on the other foot..the thing is--who broke up Kevin and Brittany? Brittany? and where will those kids end up now? Kevin is hardly a model father. Bet he wants more child support now. LOL

This is not Rocket Science.

Britney Spears is not in denial ~ she is under the same delusions many celebrities are under, they''re special and everyone better treat them that way ~ they make ridiculous amounts of money, therefore they are literally able to buy anything they want, when ever they want. There are ZERO restrictions. The word NO doesn''t compute.

This is a case of a young woman who has been shown ''just how special'' she is her entire life (without anyone taking the time to teach her how to be an adult). Anything she wants she gets. Doors are opened simply because of who she is, rather than what she''s earned.

The industry creates these problems by paying children ridiculous amounts of money and then they stand back and shake their heads when someone like Britney goes off the reservation.

She realized somewhere along the line that her bank account opens any door she wishes ~ regardless of her behavior.

The joke is on all of us as Britney has proven that fact to be correct. No matter what this young woman does ~ someone is going to take notice and publish 500 different accounts of ''What does it mean when Britney holds her Starbucks cup in her left hand''?

Cause and effect.

Brittney is beyond being ''rebellious''. This chick has two brain cells left and even they are on a search and destroy for each other. She''s shot, and still being exploited. No one is going to keep her from making CDs or personal appearances if it means $$$$$ in their pockets. Where is the stupid ''crying fan''(gag) yelling at her own people who encourage her to ''hang in there and keep doing what you do, girl...''...moron.

Silvico -- have to agree -- and to top it off I''m sure that her family, friends and advisors all warned her off the bum - but she probably believed he oved her for her and not her money - then she was devestated when he tried to get all he could get his paws on. Add in post partum depression and maybe even harmonial imbalance and you''ve got someone like Britney going off the deep end.

Hopefully she gets a full physical, some therapy and gets back with her family - she''s going to need them now.

As for Britney, She is on a fast train to a grave if she keeps this up. I hope everyone who see her life''s up''s and downs as just entertainment, and I''ve done it too, can back off. She needs to wise up before it''s too late.

it''s a hedonistic nation, the meaning of life
is to have fun, fun, fun. they who have the most
fun wins. there are lots better ways though to
have fun besides, love, dope, rock n roll, which
is the main religion of the Empire.

having the ''disease'' of addiction is terrifying.
all addicts know they have it. it scares the
heck outta them. she is not in denial, she''s hooked.
i can''t wait for her next cd to come out november
13th. i hope she doesn''t end up another janis
joplin, jimi hendrix or jim morrison who all
died of addiction at age 27. rotsa ruck kiddoe.
you''d be surprised at the millions who were rescued
from the brink of death, and made a quiet recovery.

I am a divorced parent with 3 years sobriety. My ex-husband has custody of our daughter. On the Early Show while getting ready for work, I heard them say if the mother is trying to follow a program of sobriety they will not take her child away. I had 1-1/2 years of sobriety at the time of our divorce. My ex-husband got up in a court of law and admitted under oath to trying to strangle me and hitting our daughter. He was given custody of our daughter because of a stereo type. Far too often the media focuses on the people who are very early in their recovery. It''s not unusual for someone early in their sobriety to fail, sometimes several times. Is there anyone in Hollywood who is practicing sobriety, enjoying their new way of life, and helping others to achieve the same thing?

Losing custody of my daughter is the worst feeling I have ever felt in my life. Britney Spears has been ordered to give up custody in front of the entire world. I feel horrible for her. You have to be tough to live through something like that sober. That is why these stories are important, so people like me can hear them and throw a new light on things.

If I could give anyone a gift, it would be to help them to learn to accept life on life''s terms. Instead of being upset, please take a moment instead to say a little prayer for these people who need help, whether the know it or not. I hope she finds the right path for her.

Why are you people reading about Britney Spears? If Americans paid more attention to what their elected leaders were up to, we would never have allowed us to be LIED into Iraq!

If you had been paying attention, you would have know that Cheney and Bush were LYING about WMDs, aluminum tubes, mushroom clouds, Saddam-Osama links, Niger Uranium, fake color coded ''terror alerts''...

3,800 Troops would not be permanently DEAD, thousands more maimed for life, $500 Billion wasted on a needless WAR for regional dominance and control of Iraqi Oil.

WAKE UP AMERICA! Give Britney some time off! PAy attention to the Democracy that you are losing slowly but surely.

***** Stop The War & Corporate Corruption *****

Why Don''t You Know Ron Paul??????

The corporate media will not give Ron Paul any Exposure. Because, NBC is owned by GE. GE is one of the world''s largest war-makers. They make things that go boom. They make $Billions on war. A Ron Paul administration would be bad for business. CNN is owned by AOL. Majority share holder is Saudi Royal Talal who is also partners with GHWBush in The Carlyle Group. Another major warmaker. And on and on. You get the picture. This is why they are doing a Media Blackout on him. Because they don''t WANT YOU TO KNOW THE TRUTH!!!!!
