(AP)  Some of the most politically influential conservative Christians in the U.S., alarmed by the prospect of a Republican presidential nominee who supports abortion rights, are considering backing a third-party candidate.

More than 40 Christian conservatives attended a meeting Saturday in Salt Lake City to discuss the possibility, and planned more gatherings on how they should move forward, according to Richard A. Viguerie, the direct-mail expert and longtime conservative activist.

Other participants in the meeting included James Dobson, founder of the Focus on the Family evangelical ministry in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and, according to Viguerie, Tony Perkins, head of the Family Research Council, a conservative policy group in Washington.

However, Dobson spoke out against the idea of a third party even if “both Democratic and Republican nominees are known to be entirely unsupportive of the sanctity of human life, the institution of marriage and other aspects of the pro-moral agenda,” according to Gary Schneeberger, a spokesman for Focus on the Family Action.

A spokesman for Perkins did not respond to requests for comment Monday.

Viguerie would not give specifics of the proposal or reveal additional names of participants, but said President George W. Bush “would not have been elected in '04 without the people in that room.”

“There is such jaundiced feelings about any promises or commitments from any Republican leaders,” he said in a phone interview. “You could almost cut the anger and the frustration with a knife in that room it's so strong. Because they don't know what else to do, they're talking third party.”

A spokesman for the Republican National Committee did not respond to a request for comment.

The participants were in Salt Lake City for a separate meeting of the secretive Council for National Policy, a group of conservative business, religious and political leaders that was co-founded years ago by Tim LaHaye, author of the “Left Behind” series of books. Vice President Dick Cheney flew into the city Friday to address the group, according to The Salt Lake Tribune.

Christian conservatives, who hold considerable sway in the Republican Party, have been deeply unhappy about the field of Republican presidential candidates.

Dobson has said he would not support Rudy Giuliani, calling the former New York mayor an “unapologetic supporter of abortion on demand.” Dobson has also rejected former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson as wrong on social issues, and would not back John McCain because of the Arizona senator's opposition to a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage.

Viguerie said conservatives “are still open” to former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, but said, “we haven't seen anything that guarantees that he will hold to the positions that he's articulating.” Romney has been questioned about his record on gay rights.

However, the proposal to consider a third-party candidate comes from anger that the Republicans whom Christians have helped elect for decades have failed to act on policy issues important to evangelicals on abortion, marriage and school prayer.

“Conservatives have been treated like a mistress as long as any of us can remember,” Viguerie said. “They'll have lots of private meetings with us, tell us how much they appreciate it and how much they value us, but if you see me on the street please don't speak with me.”

A third-party run would be a long shot, requiring millions of dollars and challenges to ballot access. Such a bid could prove disastrous for the Republicans by splitting the conservative vote.

There are already over two ''third parties''...the Constitution Party and the Libertarian Party. The former is pretty much anti-abortion. CBSNBCABCFOXPBSCNN is rather loathe to talk about them--or candidates who don''t represent the Anglo-American Oligarchy, like Ron Paul, Dennis Kucinich and Mike Gravel.

The Founding Fathers started with a blank paper and carefully and deliberately chose not to include mention of Jesus, Moses, Allah or any other religious icon in the Constitution. If the Christian religious right and other religion-based groups are so condent of their views, let''s remove their tax-deductible status and see how long they will survive.

I knew god loved us.

Gosh I hope it''''s true and the so called Christian conservatives do form a third party!

This will diminish the clout of the so called CHRISTIAN VALUE RIGHT WING(NUT) FACTION for a long long time! And it will free the GOP to go back to its original conservative roots sans the bigotry!

If you eliminated all the Christians who participated as founding fathers, writers of the declaration of Independence and the constitution, we would have no country at all. Study the life of Abraham Lincoln and you will see a man deeply devoted and dependent on God, not only personally but politically. And you want me to believe that we have a lesser need for politicians like him now. HOGWASH!

First off get your facts straight. Our founding fathers were NOT christians. The early presidents and patriots were generally Deists or Unitarians, believing in some form of impersonal Providence but rejecting the divinity of Jesus and the absurdities of the Old and New testaments.

Jefferson supported the separation of church and state and was the author of the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom (1779, 1786).

So stop attempting to rewrite history to support your invalid statements. But like good like christian NEOCON lying to get your way is not a sin.

Boy
I find it interesting that these posts accuse the Christian Right of hate yet these posts seeth of hatred. I would conclude that most of these people are guilty of the very transgression they accuse the Christian Right of.

Tuckerndfw is completely correct. The far right fringe of Christians is more concerned with power than faith. They obsess over the acquiring the power to force upon everyone else how to live their lives. I do not recall anywhere in the gospels that Jesus instructed his followers to install governors who will enforce his teachings upon the land. That was strictly a Roman notion.

The problem with the moral right wing is they believe that the past was better than the present and the future. They are nut cases and I for one would like to see them leave the Republican party maybe it would go back to being the Grand Old Party. But as soon as any party starts to pick up pace they like vultures jump on board and try to take it over. So I say let the losers go and we can pretty much shut them down.

These people are NOT going to leave the Republican Party, they finally have a "National Party" which is why the left the Democrat Party in the first place. These people will only leave the Republican Party when and if the Party decides to kick them out. Putting a Pro Choice Canidate on the ticket in this next election would, in effect, kick them out in much the same way that the Democrats forcing a vote on the Civil Rights Act forced them out of that party.

The pitiful thing is, jimfinster, you are absolutely right. Since we have a representative government, the more moral and conservative a nominee is, the greater the loss, only illuminates the true moral condition of our country. Instead of gloating, you should be mourning, but that is only for those who greive

Could you or anyone else in the Religious Reich give us all a date, a SPECIFIC DATE in time, when YOU think this nation was more "Moral" than it is today? I''ve asked you losers this question over and over and have never gotten an answer. There has to be a date certain we can discuss isn''t there IF you are right! The Problem is folks they can''t give you a date certain because when you roll the calendar back to that date and look at "Christian Conservatives" during THAT time, it''s embarrassing. Not only are they wrong they are so WRONG no one would admit it. So let''s have it all you Religious Nuts out there, what''s the date? 1956? 1948? What''s a good date we can look at? Sieg Heil and Amen

An elite group with only a few hundred members, the CNP meets three times a year, usually at posh hotels or resorts, going to extraordinary lengths to keep its agenda and membership secret. According to members willing to speak about it, however, the council unites right-wing billionaires with scores of conservative Christian activists and politicians, and these encounters have spawned countless campaigns and organizations.

Supported by moneybags such as Texas oilman Nelson Bunker Hunt, Amway founder Richard DeVos and beer magnate Joseph Coors, some in the group helped fund Oliver North''s secret campaign to aid the Nicaraguan contra rebels during the 1980s and financed the right-wing jihad against President Clinton in the 1990s. (The impeachment effort was reportedly conceived at a June 1997 meeting of the CNP in Montreal.) In addition, the group has funded an army of Christian organizers. Falwell says that in the past two decades, he has raised hundreds of millions of dollars for his ventures, including Liberty University, through the CNP. "My guess is that literally billions of dollars have been utilized through the Council for National Policy that would not otherwise have been available," he says. Bush attended a CNP meeting at the start of his presidential campaign in 1999 to seek support, and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld took part in the group''s gathering last April in Washington, D.C.

singinrick,

Where do you get that sftodd insulted Christians in his post about a 3rd party? His point was it would dilute the conservative vote and make it safer for leftists to dilute the Democratic vote by forming their own party.

That development would greatly benefit both the Democratic and Republican PArties.

Now that was truly an insult of both Christian cultural conservatives and ultra-left paranoia coming from a liberal Christian. You see, you are not the anointed spokesperson for all Christians.

Council for National Policy:

TheocracyWatch, a CRESP project, describes it as "an umbrella organization of right-wing leaders who gather regularly to plot strategy, share ideas and fund causes and candidates to advance the theocratic agenda."[5] Southeastern Louisiana University philosophy professor Barbara Forrest says of the Council for National Policy "The CNP membership also includes a sizeable segment of Christian Reconstructionists: "Reconstructionists espouse a radical theology that calls for trashing the U.S. Constitution and replacing it with the harsh legal code of the Old Testament. They advocate the death penalty for adulterers, blasphemers, incorrigible teen-agers, gay people, ''witches'' and those who worship ''false gods''.

DAMMMM! These guys sound like the Taliban! I wonder how many people realize what this organization is really all about???

Being a Christian conservative myself I must admit that there aren''t really any strong candidates in the Republican party running this time from a moral and social standpoint. Voting for the lesser of the 2 evils will be the determining factor come election time.
Posted by singinrick at 01:03 AM : Oct 02, 2007

WOW! Newsflash folks, singinrick is a CHRISTIAN CONSERVATIVE! Rick, we never knew!

Seriously, I have to chuckle at your forlon post. But you really don''t get it. The more conservative and "moral" the Republican nominee is, the bigger his loss will be. After 8 years of good old GWB, Americans are thoroughly sick of that fake pious crappola.

The more parties the better. Maybe it would be harder for the corporations and special interests to subvert our Democracy.
