Senate Wants To Beam Craig Up

The saga of Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho) may very well be the “Star Trek” of politics. Like the science fiction series that was continually renewed for four decades, Craig got an extension on his Senate career Wednesday, making him the Washington story that won’t go away easily.

A judge in Minnesota declined to issue a ruling until late next week on whether Craig can retract his guilty plea in a men’s restroom sex sting.

And Craig quickly confirmed the obvious.

“Today was a major step in the legal effort to clear my name,” he said in a statement. “The court has not issued a ruling on my motion to withdraw my guilty plea. For now, I will continue my work in the United States Senate for Idaho.”

That means Craig will remain in office beyond Sunday, his self-imposed deadline to resign, tormenting a Senate Republican hierarchy that would really just love for him to set sail in his 42-foot yacht, his home at the Capital Yacht Club.
