FBI: Violent Crime On The Rise

(AP)  Violent crime rose nearly 2 percent last year, the FBI reported Monday in nationwide data that show a slightly higher increase than expected.

The number of big-city murders also increased, by 1.8 percent -- the same rate as homicides nationwide. Robberies and arson also rose in large population centers, but the number of rapes and car thefts dropped, FBI data show.

The new numbers confirm that crime rates continued on a two-year upward trend after a relative lull in violence between 2002 and 2004.

Justice Department spokesman Brian Roehrkasse cast the report as good news in the effort to combat gangs, guns and violence, pointing out that the rate of crimes per 100,000 people had declined to its lowest level in 30 years.

"While there's encouraging news in the latest crime rates from the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting Program, violent crime remains a challenge for some communities," Roehrkasse said in a statement.

The Bush administration has pledged to spend $50 million this year to combat gangs and guns, and is pushing Congress for new laws to let the federal government better investigate and prosecute violent crime.

Overall, violent crime rose by 1.9 percent in 2006 -- slightly higher than the 1.3 percent increase reflected earlier this summer in preliminary FBI data.

A five-year look at crime rates show that the number of murders, robberies, rapes and other violent offenses committed in 2006 is returning to the peak reached in 2002. Crime dropped dramatically after that, the FBI data show.

In 2006, for example, an estimated 1,417,000 violent crimes were committed across the country. That was a sharp rise from the 1,360,000 crimes reported in 2004 and approaches the estimated 1,425,000-mark reached in 2002.

Any numbers on economic crime, like fraud, embezzlement, and illegal kickbacks to corrupt government officials?

The two should not be regarded separately, they are both anti social acts that harm others, and should be treated the same.

with roughly 1.5 million violent crimes in 2006
there must be a lotta people who are now in prison
or on the run. how many criminal lawyers are
there who do an excellent job of keeping criminals
free? crime is big business. crime pays. it was
a book i read at the l.a.p.d. to pass the time.
i was almost killed by a bomb after seven months
which ended my big police career. that was at
parker center. there must be a better way.
they make suggestions all the time, like
vast siberia type concentration camps out in
upper montana. or vast slave labor camps out
in death valley, ca to sweat it out. is there
a solution? i don''t think so. preemptive
law enforcement or crime prevention is hard.
to be really pre-emptive go high tech. have
everyone on earth in their own cell, operated
by a central computer. androids deliver the
**** sapiens their food. then we''d all be ''safe''!!
from each other. lol.

we are celebrating the coming crash of 2007 on
october 17th. join us at the bolshoi ballet
inn. where we will rememeber the heroes of
the bolshevik revolution, their 90th anniversary.
it is also the 20th anniversary of the 1987 crash,
when again everyone lost their life savings. lolol.
aw what the heck, its only money. as the
Greatest Depression approaches, remember our comrades
who fought and died so you and i could get a tuna
sandwich for free, as communism is just christianity
put to a ridiculous extreme. everyone sharing
and sharing alike and doing all that you do out
of the kindness of your own heart. not based
on the vile, violent premises of ayn rand and
atlas shrugged and objectivism. a world ruled
by self-interest will soon destroy itself.
now let us sing the internationale. tschiakowsky
and swan lake. taxed to death? who isn''t.

Yep YOUR right and I know when it started to spiral out of control Nov. 8,2004 when George W. Bush said," I have the vote to spend my capital, it is my capital to spend, so he is spending, and spending, and spending. The rest of us are going to the poor house.

You are correct, as the economy continues to get worse and foreclosures and debt keeps growing violent crimes will only continue to rise. Because mans instinct is to survive at any costs. You cannot take a mans home through him in the street and say FU to him and his family this is why people go postal. And corrupt politicans, corporations and Bankers are having a field day with it. They are using the prison systems now as slave labor and cheaper than china this is why they are doing it. The only people that can stop this is you the People of The Nation you must make your voice heard. Here is how you can do it in your city right now: http://ronpaul.meetup.com/cities/ If you have the ability to take action it is your responsibility. Do you have the ability?

FBI: Violent Crime On The Rise
Murders, Robberies And Other Violent Crimes Nearing 5-Year Peak

Why? With this incredible US economy, multiple wars, 9/11, right wing love i.e., Conservative hate and Carl Rove style politics divide and multiply.

As jobs get outsourced, and houses repossessed some people will see no way out. Crime will only increase if we do not improve the economy.
