Chip Reid was named CBS News National correspondent in June 2011.

Reid had been Chief White House Correspondent since January 2009. He joined CBS News in 2007 as Capitol Hill Correspondent and covered the 2008 Presidential campaign extensively, most recently traveling with Sen. John McCain.

Prior to joining CBS News, Reid covered the Senate and the House of Representatives for NBC News since fall 2004, and reported for all major NBC News broadcasts, as well as MSNBC, where he also anchored political coverage.

Before that, Reid was based in Los Angeles for NBC (2001-03). During that time, he was embedded for seven weeks with a lead unit of the U.S. Marines during the initial march of U.S troops from Kuwait to Baghdad. After the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, Reid reported from Ground Zero and from the Pentagon, and followed that with stories on the war on terror from datelines around the world, including Afghanistan, Israel, Uzbekistan and Egypt. He also covered domestic stories in the western U.S., including wildfires and politics.

Reid was based in Washington, D.C. for NBC (1996-2000), where he covered Al Gore's 2000 Presidential campaign--and the fallout from the voting irregularities--and the impeachment of President Clinton, as well as many other Beltway stories. Before joining NBC, Reid was a reporter at WJLA-TV (1994-96) and WTTG-TV (1990-93) in Washington. His career in broadcast journalism began at ABC News as a field producer in Washington (1988-89).

Previously, Reid practiced law, first as Counsel to the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee (1982-86) and then as a litigation and lobbying specialist at a major Washington, D.C. law firm (1986-88).

Reid was born in Wilmington, Del. He was graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Vassar College in 1977 with a degree in psychology, from Princeton University in 1982 with a Master's of Public Affairs and from Columbia Law School in 1982 with a law degree. He lives in Washington D.C. with his wife.

PLEASE CBS - I miss the gravity and knowledge of Chip Reid at the White House. I was horrified to see him doing a story about dogs the other night. I agree with merlinusmc's comments - please get Chip reid back to where he belongs.

Please - Please - Please send Chip Reid back to the White House and save him from the Mall's of America. I greatly miss his balanced reporting! The team of Chip & Nancy in D.C. were outstanding, why would you breakup this power duo? I'm sure Norah O'Donnell is a wonderful person, but her reporting borders on insult. She's like a third grade teacher on the President's payroll.

Instead of congress and the president going after social security, why not go after present and past administration retirement benifits and their pension fund, they got more than I have

I guess the worst thing I have heard on the news today was what I call a racist remark that as long as the President is in the White House their will be now forward progress!
