(AP)  North Korea and Syria held high-level talks Friday in Pyongyang, the North's state media reported, amid suspicions that the two countries might be cooperating on a nuclear weapons program.

The talks took place between Choe Tae Bok, secretary of the Central Committee of the North's ruling Workers' Party, and Saaeed Eleia Dawood, director of the organizational department of Syria's Baath Arab Socialist Party, the official Korean Central News Agency reported.

The two sides discussed ways of improving friendship and cooperation and other issues of bilateral interest, KCNA said, without elaborating.

Their meeting came amid suspicions that North Korea may be providing nuclear assistance to Syria, a charge both Pyongyang and Damascus deny.

The allegations arose after an alleged Israeli air raid earlier this month on unknown Syrian targets possibly connected to a weapons program.

Andrew Semmel, acting U.S. deputy assistant secretary of state for nuclear nonproliferation policy, said last week that North Koreans were in Syria, and that Syria may have had contacts with "secret suppliers" to obtain nuclear equipment.

Semmel did not identify the suppliers. However, he said that North Koreans were in Syria and that he could not exclude the possibility that the network run by the disgraced Pakistan nuclear scientist A.Q. Khan may have been involved.

U.S. President George W. Bush, when asked at a news conference Thursday about the suspicions that North Korea is giving nuclear assistance to Syria, said, "We expect them not to."

In a gesture of bi-partisanship, Pres. Bush ought to send Speaker Pelosi back to Damascus to get an explanation from Asad about Syria''s collaboration w. North Korea. Pelosi said the Syrians were ready for peace; she ought to hold their feet to the fire now. While there, she also ought to find out about the Syrian and Iranian deaths reported by Janes'' defense analysts, allegedly they were poisoned when the mustard gas or sarin gas warheads they were fitting to Syrian rockets exploded. The Speaker seems to have the confidence of Mr. Asad and she could get the world some valuable info.

Fortunately for us, Bush is such a master at foreign relations, his foreign policies are so highly regarded worldwide, and he is such an expert at negotiations, that this should be resolved in a matter of hours.

(For you righties that aren''t smart enough to figure it out, this is sarcasm.)

Yeah, the during the highly touted Clinton admin., the US made an agreement whereby N. Korea agreed not to have a weapon research program or try to produce nuclear weapons. They secretly broke that deal.

Obviously the only way to negotiate with the kind of "trustworthy" nation that N. Korea is, should be at the end of a gun barrel!

We have had 34,000 troops in South Korea for 50 years now, it''s past time to end this one way or the other and pull our troops out. If we had troops in Iraq this long, the whole world would be screaming about it.

Since this is the only site on the web that closely resembles your story lastdance, why dont you email these guys and ask them for the evidence proving it so the US AG can prosecute Cheney.

You can tell him to disclose the same information about Rumsfeld too.

Personally, I find total disgust in people who generate gossip. The same for those who repeat it.

BY THE WAY.

A pulse neutron generator is a pulse beam weapon, not a nuclear energy plant. Libya has ZERO pulse beams defending its air space, guaranteed.

Best way to deal with N Korea is to give S Korea Nukes, then pull out. Another MAD in an envelope.

Fortune magazine :

Rumsfeld was a non-executive director of ABB, a European engineering giant based in Zurich, when it won a $200m contract to provide the design and key
components for the reactors. The Defense Secretary sat on the board from 1990 to 2001, earning $190,000 a year.

Rumsfeld has never acknowledged that he knew the company was competing for the nuclear contract. In response to questions about his role in the reactor deal, former Pentagon spokeswoman Victoria Clarke told Newsweek in February 2003 that %u201Cthere was no vote on this%u201D and that her boss %u201Cdoes not recall it being brought before the board at any time.%u201D
But an investigation by Fortune magazine revealed that Rumsfeld did know:

ABB spokesman Bjoern Edlund told Fortune magazine at the time that %u201Cboard members were informed about this project.%u201D %u2026 %u201CThis was a major thing for ABB,%u201D the former director [who sat on the board with Rumsfeld] said, %u201Cand extensive political lobbying was done.%u201D
The director recalls being told that Rumsfeld was asked %u201Cto lobby in Washington%u201D on ABB%u2019s behalf.
