CBSNews.com Legal Analyst Andrew Cohen's new blog on the big issues and analyzes important cases of the day.

(AP)  A legislator who filed a lawsuit against God has gotten something he might not have expected: a response.

One of two court filings from "God" came Wednesday under otherworldly circumstances, according to John Friend, clerk of the Douglas County District Court in Omaha.

"This one miraculously appeared on the counter. It just all of a sudden was here - poof!" Friend said.

State Sen. Ernie Chambers of Omaha, a Democrat, sued God last week, seeking a permanent injunction against the Almighty for making terroristic threats, inspiring fear and causing "widespread death, destruction and terrorization of millions upon millions of the Earth's inhabitants."

Chambers, a self-proclaimed agnostic who often criticizes Christians, said his filing was triggered by a federal lawsuit he considers frivolous. He said he's trying to makes the point that anybody can sue anybody.

Not so, says "God." His response argues that the defendant is immune from some earthly laws and the court lacks jurisdiction.

It adds that blaming God for human oppression and suffering misses an important point.

"I created man and woman with free will and next to the promise of immortal life, free will is My greatest gift to you," according to the response, as read by Friend.

There was no contact information on the filing, although St. Michael the Archangel is listed as a witness, Friend said.

A second response from "God" disputing Chambers' allegations lists a phone number for a Corpus Christi law office. A message left for that office was not immediately returned Thursday.

Attempts to reach Chambers by phone and at his Capitol office Thursday were unsuccessful.

1) Kudos to Senator Chambers. If people think this lawsuit is a total and utter joke/fiasco then they''re right - but that''s the whole point! It''s about time someone actually took action to show Americans how stupid they are when they file these lawsuits (i hope the Judge in D.C. who sued the dry cleaners for losing his pants is paying attention).

2) Triple Kudos to whoever responded - be it "God" or someone on behalf of "God."

Everyone already knows that one can sue anyone for anythng. All it takes is a hard-up lawyer who will take your case, and an idiot judge who will hear the case.

We have more than enough of both. So this is a HUGE waste of time.

like mankind, God denies the charges, has a lawyer
Himself. anthromorphic concepts of God. in the image
of Himself did he make mankind. in the image
of mankind did man make God. and so forth. the
''burning bush'' still talks to moses(symbol of israel).
God as prime mover, is responsible for the behavior
of all His creatures, by the law of special agency,
business law. God aims to make a prophet. what
does it profit a man to gain the whole world but
lose his own soul. as millions will die today from
some physical reason, they wonder? why was i ever
born? from nowhere, going nowhere, for no reason?
or was there a mighty Purpose underlying it all?
another meaningless today for many. eat, sleep
and defecate. just bodies with bodily needs.
progress a grim joke. and the cost of living?
going beyond the reach of the many. malthusian
economics. what a tragedy. as we all go eventually
to the ''gallows'' in allusion, some laugh, some cry.
hang down your head tom dooley, hang down your

boy you''re bound to die. aren''t we all, tom dooley?

LAF! So god took time out from his or her day to respond to this fine suit? How about instead this god spend time healing sick children that fill our hospitals or stop the fighting overseas? How about this god make an appearance to us all and prove once and for all that he or she is real. Will not happen of course, because just as someone made this response up to the courts, someone made up this god and all gods current and prior to this god. Why spend time in Douglas County, Omaha, and not where the real problems are god? Oh, I know, I know%u2026.because god only exists in the minds of the weak and cannot really solve problems.

It%u2019s a shame that the world sees us reading a letter from a god from within our hallowed court system. Had this happened in an Arabic nation, American bible thumpers would tisk and nod their collective heads at the sight%u2026.

LOL stevecburdet, since u want to post bible fiction, let me join you: "So they sent twelve thousand warriors to Jabesh-gilead with orders to kill everyone there, including women and children. "This is what you are to do," they said. "Completely destroy all the males and every woman who is not a virgin." Among the residents of Jabesh-gilead they found four hundred young virgins who had never slept with a man, and they brought them to the camp at Shiloh in the land of Canaan."

Nice god.....nice nice god. Would ths god be alive today, we would send him or her to the court system for mass murder, no?

Boy, sounds like God doesn''t want to take responsibility.

Maybe Ernie needs to specify the God above this one - kinda like a "Supreme God"?

Also, is God an American citizen?

God only gave ten laws in the book of Deuteronomy and no one but Jesus has been able to keep them all. TEN LAWS, how simple you think this would be to keep. The reason we have sickness, wars, broken marriages, etc. is a result of our not keeping god''s laws. One of the first is belief. Check yourself by these ten laws and see if it the reason we have "problems" isn''t found right where you live. We all inherited the sin nature from Adam, but we don''t have to live under sin because Jesus fulfilled the law so that we through faith in Him might through the indwelling of the Holy Ghost be able to live above sin. Not that we won''t sin again but we strive to live without it. Our goal should be to honor God with our lives because Jesus gave His for us that we might have everlasting life. John 3:16 says that god so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever believes in him should not perish. No god, no peace. Know god, know peace:)

As fellow Democrat and Atheist I hate to disagree with the good Senator, but the "person" he is referring to is not God, but rather anyone of the legions of idiots that follow this myth once they get into power. Like Bush for instance. There is no god, just mentally ill people who murder in the name of the myth.

LOL again stevecburdet. No god no peace indeed. Know god know peace indeed. Ask the Jews if they know god, and then if they found peace. Ask the Arabs if they know god and then found peace. Ask American religious leaders if they know god and found peace. I have no god and I do have peace. Its the god squad that cannot find peace because they constantly fight and deny the existence of thousands of other gods, also man made, by trying to sell their own brand of god. You cannot find peace if you have to sell 24x7.

And I am glad u brought up the commandments. Here''s a commandment for you, broken by your god, yet in your book of truth. Remember, jealousy is not good for the soul:

So now the LORD says: "Be patient; the time is coming soon when I will stand up and accuse these evil nations. For it is my decision to gather together the kingdoms of the earth and pour out my fiercest anger and fury on them. All the earth will be devoured by the fire of my jealousy."

I have no trouble believe that God is there, but I have a lot of trouble swallowing the fact that given free will, we weren''t given knowledge to go with it. All the mysteries of God and man has to make decisions based on what, the one Good Book He left us, written 2000 years back, with no moral guidance on todays fiascos like genetically engineered food or cloning?

How can man incorporate a God into his life if that God is unapproachable, unattainable, out of touch, and divorced from those He created?

I want God close to me, I need Him close as times get darker and darker. I have loved Him only to get tested and trials time and again until I am sick of the whole business. Yet, take Him to trial and He says No Jurisdiction.

He has all the excuses on His side, free will and Satan and no jurisdiction. I won''t get to make excuses when it is time for me to stand and be judged.

God says all will be revealed, but He plans to make His revelations when it is too late for man to learn from it and correct his mistakes. It is from lack of knowledge NOW that man stumbles so, and works so hard to find his own answers.

I would trade a little free will for a bit more hands-on by God. I mean, what crime is there to having God around more and having man a bit less afraid and running around like crazy trying to find meaning, when meaning is supposed to be just upstairs.

God is always around. We are made in his image. You have merely to look within to find Him. He works through us and through our free will we do what He asks of us. Very simple. It all comes from within.

adasher1, God is jealous for your soul. I wouldn''t write if I didn''t hope that someone might see Jesus in me. Thou shalt have no other gods before me. This is one of god''s commandments. Yes there are other gods, including pride. Humble yourself before it''s too late. Romans 14:11 - For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God. God bless you, adasher1. Jesus loves you:)

You say "God only gave ten laws in the book of Deuteronomy." Perhaps if you actually knew anything about the bible you apparently so value you would know that God gave 613 commandments and not just 10.

I always find it amusing that the bible thumpers rarely have the foggiest notion of what that bible actually says.

But then, as it is all but axiomatic that most Christians, outside of the charlatans and hucksters who exploit them (and who are often quite clever) are simpletons, I shouldn''t be surprised.

This is hardly the first suit naming this particular defendant. Nor will it be the last. The best one I remember reading about, the person had all the local churches served as God''s representatives and asked the courts to consider church assets as granting the court quasi in rem jurisdiction.

The good senator''s problem is that he didn''t provide proper service on the defendant''s representatives.

That''s true. He should have had all churches served with the goal of ending their tax-exempt status. That''d scare the hell out of them. After all, we don''t give tax-exempt status to any other carnivals or dog and pony shows, so why should we do it for this scam?

Respectfully, I would ask you to explain what you mean by this and await your pontification on what God "inside" means to you. Please forgive my being suspect of your oversimplification of a complex and life-long study of the issue of religion and God, but I am willing to hear you on the topic (which is not the case on politics).

When I look inside myself and listen to my little voice, what I hear is Chinese food, because my little voice loves Chinese food and is always telling me to go get eggroll. Eggroll is not a sin, grant you, but I am fairly sure it isn''t God either.

This world and my place in it is extremly complex and to placate me with an overly simple and unexplained answer is the basis of the whole problem. Lack of knowledge.

What? That''s not in the Bible?

Ah, the good Christians don''t practice what they preach?

Oh my!

I consider myself a Christian, but it is not my place to judge others. Free will does mean that people have a choice. Being Christian means that you accept people''s choices and not judge them. Doesn''t mean you have to agree with their choices, only accept their right to make them. the love they neighbor part is hard when the mussic is blaring at 2 a.m.

"How can man incorporate a God into his life if that God is unapproachable, unattainable, out of touch, and divorced from those He created?"

AaaBee, I hope you want an answer to your question because that''s what I have for you.

First, God did not create us and leave us "to our own devices". True, He did give us free will, but He also gave us something else--or should I say, Someone else. God realized our hopeless condition and sent us a Savior. His Name is Jesus Christ. There is no name above that Name. Period.

I challenge you to search through history and you will find the finger of God at every point. God has involved Himself in human history and the results are there for you to examine.

You will also learn that the Bible is an accurate source that is trusted by the majority of unbiased historians.

One good reference book is "Evidence that Demands a Verdict" by Josh McDowell. Josh took the same trip I''m challenging you to take. An attorney, Frank Morrison, decided to write a book about Jesus and His last days but deny the resurrection. But he came to study the facts with care and wrote his book on the other side. His first chapter is known as, "The Book that Refused to be Written."

This is a search you will enjoy. Many people have undertaken it and are far better for it.

The responses I''ve read are truly pathetic and mean spirited. You dissrespect Christains and lump us into one category. Not all of us are evangelicals with blinders on. The tolerance you spout extends to anyone but those who believe in God. Your arguments are negated by the stereotypical rhetoric you always use. All I can say is that it is truly a waste of the Court''s resources to have to deal with such triva. I would think a State representative would have more important things to do for the people of Nebraska. But, I guess that''s an example of free will, either do something constructoive or waste limited resources to grab your 15 minutes of fame.

The Bible did mention that man will bring down (false) religion (Babylon the Great) in the finally days in the blink of an hour religion will be no more. Even the World leaders that pimp religion will say to bad to bad. (Rev 18:1-10) So look around your congregations and notice how empty it is becoming? Notice all the scandals being reveal? Get out of her if you dont want to share in her faith.. that is if you believe...

But, wait, the bible says god dwells in the light on one verse and in the dark in another. It says he dwells in chooses temples in one verse, and that he does not dwell in temples in another. It says that he is seen and heard in one verse, yet another says he is not seen nor heard. One says he was tired and rested, one says he never tiers nor rests. One says he is satisfied with his works, yet another says he is not. Anyone that says that this book is a trusted and accurate work does not need to be a historian%u2026.they need to be a story teller like the rest of the biblical authors.

Yes, and.....

Respectfully, I have already stated that I believe God exists. All your nice points have been dealt with and accepted, but the journey progresses.

Mankind is searching, always on the hunt. If it were God for which we hunt, my finding Him should have ended the emptiness. It didn''t. My reading the Good Bible Genesis to Revelations should have slacked my thirst for knowledge. It didn''t.

I want God and cannot find Him. I need God and cannot feel Him. I am afraid, and feel like I stand without Him. Air has more presence in my life than He does, and I need Him more than air.

What then, dovestar? Am I not trying hard enough? Or perhaps is God not available, not near, not accessible to the needs of this frail human frame.

If I felt that I am the only one who dispaired, I would accept the blame of God''s aloofness on myself, but how many of us here know the feeling of aloneness, even Mother Theresa felt the same. If we labor as God asks us to do, and He cannot be with us in our labors, why do we need a God at all then, if we end up living our lives alone and unguided, even after we search, find, and accept Christ?

Personal to Adashert
If you look hard enough you will find stuff like that. Like the famous example, "And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself. (Matt 27:5) Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.(Luke 10:37b)
Many of these examples are arrived at by taking verses out of context.
But can you explain why the Bible has more evidence for its accuracy than any ten pieces of classical literature combined? And despite the attacks on it that Book stands today solid as a rock? Can you explain that?

congress shall make no law respecting an establshment
of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise

today is hedonism or epicureanism, religion of love,
dope and rock n roll. a populist religion. eat
drink, be merry, and marry everyone, for tomorrow
we die. the purpose of life is to have fun, fun,
fun, at someone else''s expense, they work, you enjoy
the profits and the gravy and party hearty while
they work their fingers to the bone. so that
the good times may roll. spend, spend, tomorrow''s
money, for tomorrow will never come, and the debts
of yesterday will be written off, because there
will be no one around to collect those debts. so
go ahead, leverage fifty quintillion dollars against

Once again, Mudrose, we converse on an interesting topic and once again, you fall away into meaningless sarcastic drivel.

When a person asks you a sincere question, this is your idea of a reply?

Hiding behind platitudes; is that an authentic basis upon which to build religious or political beliefs? What do you have but insupportable platitudes to give when you are asked even the most straightforward questions. Some of us, Mudrose, can see through insincerity.

What about answering me from "within", Mudrose. How about taking a look at how you feel and posting, for once, a genuine thought of your own.

the first amendment to the us constitution is
quite explicit. i repeat. congress shall make
no law respecting the establishment of religion
or the free exercise thereof. and so the religion
of war, the religion of the police state, the religion
of no religion are also dominant religions in the
u.s.a. the religion of prisons for the many, and
freedom for the few, is another religion. operation
infinte justice and operation infinite mercy. for
Reality or God as you like it, is infinitely just
and also infinitely merciful. define infinity.
you cannot. you are using finite terms to define
infinity. and as a finite being, any concept
you have of infinity will come up short. little
short, need a loan, try the loan ranger. he never
asks debts to paid back. money for nothing, chicks
for free. aw what the heck, its only money.
that''s another religion too. some call him uncle sap.
uncle sam that is to say? the common fund is there
to have fun with. borrow now, never pay it back.
we''ll amortize it over 30 million years. give the
love loan to future generations. it ain''t so cool?
no its getting hotter.

I guess this just goes to show you how much Respect there actually is for God in America, particulary by those who claim to know God so well as to Hypocritically and Heritically Speak on God''s behalf. Of particular note is CBSnews, claiming to be an agent of the Free Press is Reporting, apparently as usual in the style of an Op-Ed piece but not under that banner, through diligent Investigative Reporting, although They don''t actually even attempt to verify the author of the Response. So muuch, so veeery much to have Faith in United States of America.
