1 Million Chinese-Made Cribs Recalled

CPSC: Deaths Of 3 Children Linked To Simplicity And Graco Cribs

(CBS/AP)  Nine-month-old Liam Johns died in his bed, suffocating when the drop side of his crib came loose and he got stuck between it and his mattress.

"We were in so much shock," Liam's father Chad Johns told CBS News. "It took a very long time before we could sit down and grieve."

About 1 million Simplicity and Graco cribs are being recalled after Little Liam and two other children became entrapped in their cribs and died of suffocation, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said Friday.

Liam had been sleeping in a Simplicity crib.

A year after Liam's death in 2005, six-month-old Edward Millwood was found dead in his Simplicity crib in Georgia.

The two died in the recalled cribs which were sold through May 2007. A 1-year-old child died in a newer model of the cribs, which has not been recalled but is being investigated by the safety agency, CPSC officials said.

In all three deaths, the consumer had installed the drop-rail side of the crib upside down, the CPSC said. This creates a gap in the crib that children can slide into and suffocate.

Seven other infants have been entrapped in the cribs, according to the CPSC. There have been 55 reports of the cribs' drop sides detaching or the hardware failing to hold the side to the crib.

Simplicity Inc., of Reading, Pa., is listed as manufacturer of all the cribs, which were made in China. The recalled cribs were sold nationwide, under the Simplicity or Graco brands, from January 1998 through May 2007. The recall involves multiple models and model numbers.

It's the largest crib recall in CPSC history, and now the one place parents are told they can safely leave their children without supervision is in question.

"Crib hardware failure is actually one of the most common causes of death in cribs," Nancy Cowles, a crib safety advocate, told CBS News correspondent Sandra Hughes.

In fact, according to Cowles' organization Kids In Danger, 30 children are killed and 1,200 are injured every year in crib accidents.

And while these cribs were made in China, in this case she says China isn't to blame:

"The problem is the design flaws that the U.S. manufacturers designed into the product," Cowles said.

"Simplicity strives to make safe products, that is our number one priority. That's why we worked with the CPSC to take this action," Simplicity president Ken Waldman said in a statement.

In a separate recall in June, the commission recalled about 40,000 Nursery-in-a-Box cribs, manufactured by Simplicity, because the assembly instructions incorrectly explain how to attach the drop side.

None of the cribs that Simplicity currently supplies to stores is included in a recall, the company said in a statement.

The commission, however, cautioned consumers who have the newer versions not covered by the recall to check to make sure the drop side is installed right side up and is securely attached. The newer hardware has a flexible tab at the top of the lower track and a permanent stop at the bottom. The older hardware has a flexible tab at the bottom of the lower tracks.

In an earlier Simplicity recall, a 19-month-old child in Myrtle Creek, Ore., died Jan. 6, 2006, in a crib that carried the Graco logo, the CPSC said in February 2006. Mattress support slats came out of the crib, and the child suffocated after getting trapped between the mattress and the footboard. That type of crib had been included in a December 2005 recall of about 104,000 Aspen 3 in 1 Cribs.

The company is offering free repairs for cribs with older hardware. For more information, consumers can contact Simplicity at (888) 593-9274.

I''m not sure how the Chinese were able to design these death-cribs under the eyes of the US company and sabatoge the instruction manual, but if we let all Americans know that it must be China''s doing, then we can finally rest assured that the deeper problems have been addressed. Fools we will not look!

It is time to stop shopping at walmart and buying their Chinese garbage that is Made in China. We need to teach the big corporations that, that is what you get for dumping American workers for cheap labor. Stop shopping at Walmart because guess what????? Our complete idiots in Congress can''t stop the poisoned products here in the USA because China is now a superpower and tells the U.S. what to do. Plus, they can literally bankrupt the U.S. if they take their money out of the U.S.

Maybe Bush could explain why, under his administration, the number of product inspectors at the Consumer Product Safety Commission was cut from 17 to 1. Yes that''s right ONE inspector to inspect 12,000+ different products that come into this country EVERY YEAR. Just another federal agency, charged with keeping us safe, that had it''s budget gutted by Bush and his administration.

Its easy to understand why there is only one inspector, thats so big business can regulate themseleves into bigger profits at the cost of the american tax payer. When did it become wrong to use american tax payer dollars to help americains??????

Engineering gaffe or the one made in the factory?

And who designed it and gave those blueprints to the factory?

And if the consumer is installing it improperly, is it due to a bad instruction manual or the people just being dumb, forgive me? I''ve read some badly written manuals, complete with generic or poorly conceived diagrams, but it''s also not beyond my comprehension to know some people have IQs lower than the temperature of liquid nitrogen and not look for obvious mistakes... especially if it''s something for children; we''re supposed to cherish life, right?

IT''S TIME TO PUT THE BLAME WHERE IT BELONGS:

THE BUSH ADMINISTATION, AND IT''S FAILURE TO ENFORCE SAFETY LAWS AND REGULATIONS, AND THE LACK OF SAFETY INSPECTORS, HAS ALLOWED THIS COUNTRY TO BE FLOODED WITH DANGEROUS AND DEFECTIVE PRODUCTS FROM CHINA.

THIS ADMINISTRATION HAS PUT OUR CHILDREN AT RISK, AND HAS A TOTAL DISREGARD FOR THE SAFETY OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE.

WE SHOULD ALL BE OUTRAGED, AND DEMAND THIS PRESIDENT TO STEP IN AND PUT A STOP TO THE KILLING OF OUR CHILDREN AND PETS, BY CHINA.

STAY THE COURSE (MY ARSE) IT''S TIME FOR ACTION......

it''s not "made in China" that is the problem... Saying this only places the blame on others and not placing it where it belongs. The blame belongs to corporations looking for cheaper ways of doing business, as well as our greedy society not willing to accept less in pay that has cause much of the sky-rocketing costs to live.

It won''t be long, the jobs that once left our country for cheaper wages, will soon return. For the wages are going up in other countries and corporations here in the States will see the cost of doing business is too costly through recalls, the need to pay more for shipping, etc.

Now we are seeing the sad results of the selling of america. It''s not enough to kill our pets, now they''re going after our babies. But the real blame lies in capitalism. These greedy pigs will sell out their own mother for the mighty profit. It seems to me that this pig-out capitalist system has about run its course, but as long as there are people stupid enough to believe what they say it will just keep on feeding on us.Me, I''m selling my home here in Idaho, the reddest of the red!I''m getting away before somebody taps my foot.Keep your heads in the mud, you conservative jerks.Apparently you like it.

No, my biggest problem here is not with China but rather with Simplicity Inc. who has a responsibility to make sure the products they are sending out are safe, they did not obviously do this.

Had they had the proper checks and balnces in place this may not of happened. Believe me I feel that we should bring more of our production back home and get off our lazy assests but until than companies need to be held accountable for the safety of there products not keep deflecting the blame.

First, the blame lies not with the Chinese, but with our own corporations (if anyone). Although, I can tell you that in the case of my own company, Chinese labor was invoked not to greedily increase the profit margin, but simply to remain price-competitive with our competitors. Many U.S. companies simply have no choice but to use offshore labor if they want to stay in business.

Second, correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that there have been major recalls of cribs and strollers even when they were being manufactured in the U.S.

Finally, this recall is a drop in the bucket when compared to the total volume of goods manufactured in China.

Well if Mattel is any example some other corporate bigwig is soon going to tell China they''re sorry they got China in trouble again.

The profit margin realized from manufacturing in China must be enormous; enormous enough to make our Business "leaders" into kow-towing supplicants of China.

If China''s cost of living allows those "low wages" to build their empire, how come America''s cost of living is so high?

And with so many media sources hyping up China and its "1.3 billion shoppers" (and media pirates, where one can buy a DVD for $1 over there and never mind all the software opportunities we''re missing out on...) all those Americans who put in hard work, just to see their jobs offshored to a country, of which more and more of their products are being made toxic or will break down around the time the warranty expires... who''s telling them to use lead paint and cheap capacitors? We just tell them how to make it; they do the actual work. There are problems in both sides, but most of the problems have less to do with "design flaws" than they do toxic materials.

Tell me where I''m wrong; I have been before.

So Mattel''s problem with the poisonous detachable magnets were in fact a design flaw FROM Mattel? And these cribs were ALSO a design flaw?

Ahhhh....so it was these company''s management that, in their push for cheaper, cheaper, cheaper, were really at fault.

Well, that''s ok then. Just as long as it isn''t some FOREIGN Business killing our children.

My 3rd grand child will be born in December. New parents please ask the help of your parents or grandparents to put those new baby items and toys together. Unless your mechanically inclined you may make a tragic mistake. Read the directions and if it doesn''t seem right go back to an older adult for help. Your parents and grandparents were young once, too. My granddaughter told me she wouldn''t buy from a thrift store or yard sale because she wanted her baby to be safe. Now we all have to be cautious of what we buy and where we buy it. It does take a Village to raise a child! Also for the person who thinks you should buy expensive items to be safe: not everyone has the money you must have. I buy many of the same products at the "cheap places" that have the designer tags you think are safe because they cost more where ever you shop. It is a buyer be where market.

Foreign goods and labor are "Good for you"!
Americans - repeat after me - goods and labor "from China" are "Good for you"!
Be sure to thank GWB - all these wonderful things/events happened under his watch!

Erm, did you idiots actually read the actual news article, or are words just too difficult for you inbred rednecks to understand??

It is stated that "in all three deaths, the consumer had installed the drop-rail side of the crib upside down, the CPSC said."

The idiots (READ AMERICANS) installed the thing wrong now it is "CHINA''s FAULT" ?! ***??

And :

"The problem is the design flaws that the U.S. manufacturers designed into the product," Cowles said.

The fault lies in the design, which is designed by AMERICANS. YEP, AMERICANS. And yet the news blow it out of proportion to highlight China, which is unfair bias with racist overtone.

If the beds had lead based paint on them, then could "us redneck Americans" complain without being called rascist? I bet not, cause you just naturally hate America first. Well, Americans can complain even if it''s misguided. I bet if Chinese complain, they get put in prison or shot. Don''t you remember Tienemen Square?

If the war on terror is real, those terrorists milling about in the Middle East will eventually move farther east. They''re already attacking India.

China should eventually be worried about Al Quaeda, but if the number of poisoned products continues (the Mattel toys'' magnets (but not the lead paint) and arguably this crib excluded because a designer may have more of the pertinent blame), global market consumers will rightly avoid China like they would the bubonic plague and the multinational companies will HAVE to relocate in order to save face. China is arguably in a worse position than the US thanks to deadly pet food, antifreeze-laden toothpaste, tainted human food, amongst other things...

Oh, it''s also funny when media outlets (CBS isn''t alone) go back and forth between "US Corporation" and "Multinational corporation", especially when bad news is afoot. In a globalized world ran by corporations that seek the lowest cost, and doubly so if they move their HQ out of the US (usually to avoid paying taxes), they are not US corporation. They are multinational corporations.

Getting bit tired of these defective Chinese product stories. Obviously these multi-nationals making billions of dollars do not want to sepend a penny actually testing the products they sell till people start dying.

These companies have become nothing more than a marketing entity for Chinese manufacturers. They only advertise, sell, and collect money and outsource everyting else to china with total ignorance to safety of their products.

Blame has to be shared by irresponsible companies who sell garbage and are only too ready to point fingers and the sky falls.

''Tis wrong to be belittling the parents for being "too stupid" to assemble the crib. From Simplicity''s web site:

"The drop-side failures result from both the hardware and crib design, which allow consumers unintentionally to install the drop-side upside down."

Proper design would have brackets that could not be mounted incorrectly - they simply wouldn''t fit if assembled wrong.

Of course, it is cheaper to make four identical brackets, although I do not know if that is what happened in this case. For some reason you can''t get to the assembly instructions on Simplicity''s web site anymore.

CHINESE OWN DEMONIC-RATS AND BUY THEM THE ELECTIONS!!!

DEMONIC-RATS SOLD THE USA OUT TO CHINA!!!

The tale of shady Chinese Clinton donors avoiding U.S. justice is a familiar one that dates back to the 1996 Clinton-Gore fundraising scandal known as Chinagate. The Clintons took millions in laundered foreign campaign donations from Chinese Communists in exchange for liberalizing trade policy with China, dropping pending indictments against influential Chinese figures, spots on a U.S. trade mission and overnight stays at the White House.

Many of the Chinagate donors were successfully prosecuted even though Clinton Attorney General Janet Reno blocked investigators%u2019 efforts at the Justice Department. More than 100 people connected to the fundraising scandal fled the country, however. Norman Hsu seems to be following their lead.
