Black Leaders Blast Justice System In Jena While Many Locals Resent Town's Racist Portrayal In The Media

(CBS/AP)  The rally was heavily promoted on black Web sites, blogs, radio and publications. State police declined to give crowd estimates, but participants at the park and the courthouse appeared to number in the thousands.

Sharpton admonished the demonstrators to remain peaceful, and there were no reports of trouble as of midmorning. Many white residents in the predominantly white town of 3,000 have complained that the town was being unfairly portrayed as racist.

"This doesn't offend me. I'm glad they're doing it. I believe in people standing up for what's right," one white resident, Ricky Coleman, 46, said as he watched the rallies. "What bothers me is this town being labeled racist. I'm not racist."

"I don't think these folks have a clue what's happened here," said Kenny Robertson, 50. "This is a good town. I was born and raised here. We're not racists. When all you foreigners get out of here, things will go back to normal."

A group of about a dozen white residents and black demonstrators engaged in an animated but not angry exchange during the march. Whites asked blacks if they were aware of Bell's criminal record, blacks replying that Jena High School administrators had mishandled the incidents at the school.

Another white resident, Bill Williamson, 59, said he spent much of the morning trying to convince black visitors that the town was being treated unfairly and that Bell belongs in jail. "I think we changed one man's mind. He listened and found out something about it. But most of these people don't want to hear," Williamson said.

The demonstrators included large numbers of civil rights movement veterans and college students from across the region who weren't alive in the '60s.

Elizabeth Redding, 63, of Willinboro, N.J. said she marched at Selma, Ala., when she was in her 20s.

"This is worse, because we didn't get the job done," she said as she trudged up a hill leading to the park rally. "I never believed that this would be going on in 2007."

Tina Cheatham missed the civil rights marches at Selma, Montgomery and Little Rock, but she had no intention of missing another brush with history. The 24-year-old Georgia Southern University graduate drove all night to reach tiny Jena in central Louisiana.

"It was a good chance to be part of something historic since I wasn't around for the civil rights movement. This is kind of the 21st century version of it," she said.

Red Cross officials manned first aid stations near the local courthouse and had water and snacks available. Portable toilets and flashing street signs to aid in traffic direction were in place. At the courthouse, troopers chatted amiably with each other and with demonstrators who began showing up well before dawn.

Sharpton said Bell, whom he spoke with Wednesday, was heartened by the show of support.

"He doesn't want anything done that would disparage his name -- no violence, not even a negative word," Sharpton said.

Tina Norris, who owns Café Martin in Jena, says the people here have been referred to as another Mayberry and they're tired of being laughed at, reported CBS affiliate WAFB-TV.

Norris says, "This is an incident that's been blown out of proportion. We're ready for it to be over. Get back to our small-town life."

Reginne Gardner, 38, a black Jena resident, collected cash from protesters who parked their cars on the lawn of a relative's home. Gardner said race relations in town have always been strained, but have grown even worse since this episode unfolded.

"I hope this makes things better," she said. "We all have to live here. I wish we all could get along, black and white."

Just think, if they had driven a little further south to New Orleans, they could have helped rebuild, or marched against all the killings there. That would have really helped the community.

Thanks you for your reply, and I respect the same. However, please know that my posting is a 3 parts comment as that described below! If you should read it carefully than you would find it in harmony with the subject in question.
I see your comment is agreeable with me to some extend, but please refer to my Penal Code Posting in part 3. - However; one cannot separate the movement of the NAACP from that they have already capitalized on the media for this case! If you see what I wrote than you would understand! Especially on the part of been %u201Cfair and natural%u201D with the TN Penal code judgment!
But, ones the surface movement like that done by the NAACP starts, and later down play it after a release of the arrested students - to a hush-hush profile when the music is over. Many will look at Al and Jessie for their participation on this as orchestrated by them no dough. By the way that white student on the hospital bed, would be asking him self (why is there a marching rallied with he picture of Martin L. This situation about whether or not this boy gets to jail has nothing to do with Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton''s credibility. If they like to be in the camera all the time, thats their business. This situation that they are trying to fight, whether or not you believe their real reasoning behind it, is to find justice both ways. No one is saying that the boys who beat up the kid shouldn''t be punished, but if the same crime was committed before and something not nearly as harsh was done, why do the black kids get a harsher punishment? If we as a country decide that beating up someone is wrong, why should the color of their skin matter? If this boy "Belle" is going to jail for however many years and the other boy just got suspended for a couple of years, do you find that just? If one goes to jail, they should all go.

I guess AL and Jesse were just to busy contemplating and researching their decision whether they should have attended, and gone to Nevada to help that lame doc OJ Simpson or not. However, should they have rallied there they would have been seen as just another group of loonies of their NAACP circus, as the American people would have seen them for what they truly are. RACIST covered in sackcloth%u2019s!

They only pick and choose news when there are whites against blacks, grab the media by their horns, and later capitalize on the free media movement. I must say they are smart! And perhaps some of those politicians when they do run for office they should learn from Jesse and Al as how to stir a controversial subject to get a free media, and to cross their point to the public, but NOW YOU KNOW this is wrong.

He would instigate, rally, not be part of the problem of course, later get involved as the soul savior for the solution, and get a banquet for his celebration. Only to see the other innocent co-workers be terminated! LOOKOUT FOLKS the DEVIL ITS JUST INFRONT OF A PULPIT CHURCH - AS HE IS OUTSIDE OF THE CHURCH AND USES MANY CARASMATIC FACE TITLES!

I haven%u2019t yet heard the so call Reverends say or sympathize to that beat-up student/family and the same to the 6 boys where the LORD says VENGANGES IS MINE SAYS THE LORD! But I guess they have their own NAACP bible interpretation!

Notice how the NAACP always starts their revolution march marking accusations before it is all exposed at a trial. IT IS CALLED: - PUBLIC OPINIONS COURT RALLIED - SUPPORT%u201D, and that%u2019s how they grab the media by their horns, and get in the wagon. If they were so righteous why would they need the media%u2026? One only needs to look at the news and %u201CWalla%u201D what do you see, but many spices and colors involved!

Should you close your eyes for that moment, and re-cap on that moment in time that this student received countless traumatic blows, and/or left aside unattended begging to stop hitting him to death. Now, think if that person was your son or daughter regardless of any race, creed or gender in your opinion court! Now can you see! I pray that this does not happen to anyone!

And, to end my comment I wish that those white students involved should have expressed their Freedom in a more responsible and sensitive way! Sure there are loops in the law, but that is not a license to offend someone%u2019s Creed, Nationality, Color, *** or Gender. You just don%u2019t know how beautiful of a freedom we have it here Compared to other countries!

Remember our boys over seas are fighting the same for our %u201CFreedom%u201D the as well!

Lots of stuff off the point about our soldiers. Not sure how they have to do with the racial injustice in Jena.

I will make one simple observation: I am a white person. But when 8 or 9 white kids can beat up a black kid and get off scot free. And same thing happens by 6 black kids on a white kid. And the black kids get tried as adults and sent to prison. This is just pure and simple racial injustice. Proof is in the pudding. Racists on this bulletin board claim all sorts of bad things about the black kids. Yet 50,000 marched in their defense. None of these racists hiding behind their internet acronyms marched on behalf of the white racists in Jena. Not one. Vote with your feet. Talk is cheap. Racists are tough hiding behind anonymity.
