Syria was the subject of IAEA investigation in 2004 on suspicions it could have been a customer of the nuclear black market run by the Khan network - the same operation that supplied Iran and Libya with materials for their clandestine atomic projects. But the diplomat, who demanded anonymity for discussing confidential information, said the IAEA found no concrete evidence of such activity.

The issue also was raised Tuesday at U.N. headquarters in New York, where Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told reporters he was awaiting clarification on the “intrusion of Israeli air force into Syrian airspace.” Ban said he read North Korea's report denying involvement but did not have any independent information.

The editorial in Tishrin, which reflects Syrian government thinking in a country where the media is tightly controlled, said the U.S. accusations show Washington's pro-Israel bias and have no credibility.

It said Washington was “busy on behalf of Israel circulating claims” that the incursion involved “possible nuclear facilities supplied by (North) Korea.”

“The strange thing is that the Americans are talking on behalf of Israel and are providing excuses and concocting new false spins such as talking about presumed Syrian nuclear activity and completely turning a blind eye about the Israeli nuclear danger,” the Syrian editorial said.

Israel is widely believed to have nuclear weapons but has never acknowledged it.

The Syrian newspaper said the accusations “recall those false claims that the Americans and the British circulated about Iraq's nuclear programs.”

Tishrin was referring to Saddam Hussein's alleged weapons of mass destruction program, one reasons cited by the U.S. for the invasion of Iraq in 2003. No such weapons were found.

It said Washington's “blatant bias toward Israel has hurt - and continues to hurt - the image the United States and its role of justice, fairness and the preservation of international peace.”

Israeli President Shimon Peres sought to calm tensions following with Syria.

“The nervousness in relations between Syria and ourselves is over,” Peres told foreign reporters in Jerusalem. “We are clearly ready to negotiate directly with Syria for peace.”

Peres' comment followed similar remarks Monday by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, who said he has “a lot of respect for the Syrian leader and for Syrian behavior.”

Olmert said he is prepared for peace negotiations with Syria if the conditions are right. He has made the same offer of peace talks before, but this was the first time he has mentioned Syria at all since the reported airstrike. In 2000, Israel-Syria talks neared agreement but broke down over final border and peace arrangements.

pwrslm,

good show.

Obviously the moveon.org folks are not too happy. They''d love Syria, Iran AND North Korea to obtain nukes and deliver them - on Israel, and then on us.

Then Hillary and Boy Obama would wring their hands and make all kinds of excuses - just as they are doing now - NOT to obliterate Ahmedinejedad and his terror state.

We had the chance to do so when another Democratic Coward and Bigot dropped the ball back in 1979. If we - God forbid - are even nuked by the Iranians, and that peanut *** is still alive, he should be hanged in the rubble of our city - while we do what he should have done back in November 1979.

When the Israelis finally get rid of Olmert, as they should, hopefully the next PM there will deal with Assad the way he and his daddy should have been dealt with - not by a feigele like ehud barak.

Syria is not a signatory of either the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), - an international agreement banning the production, stockpiling or use of chemical weapons - or the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT.

Globalsecurity.org cites Syria as having one of the most advanced chemical weapons programs in the Middle East. A major chemical warfare accident in July killed dozens of Iranian Engineers and 15 Syrian Engineers/soldiers when a chemical warhead exploded when being installed on a SCUD missle.

Remember, pound for pound, dirty nuclear bombs are more destructive than a nuclear explosion because the radiation is not released as explosive energy, thus emitting its deadly radiation for centuries.

Chernobyl is an example of a dirty bomb. How many people are living there today? In case you don''t know, it''s a ghost town.

The code Islam lives by;

You can lie if it is to decieve the enemy.

The enemy is every person who does not adhere to Sharia.

Do not make peace/friends with the Jews and Christians, only make a hudna, or a temporary peace, while you build your strength until you can fight and win.

It is a crime to kill a Muslim. It is not a crime to kill a non muslim. If you kill a Jew, you will be rewarded in heaven.

If you kill non muslim children, it is not a crime. If you die while you do it, you will be rewarded in heaven.

Its ok to kill muslim children if you blame it on the enemy, to bring disgrace and discord among non muslims.

Islams mandate in the Koran is to recover the property of Allah, and allah owns the world. Any infidel that refuses to submit to Islams authority, or convert to Islam, is your enemy. Any non Islamic nation that refuses to convert or submit to Sharia has committed an offense against Allah, and all muslims are ordered to fight against those who offend the right religion.

The only guarantee you have to get to heaven is to die while fighting for Islam. Hell is full of women, because they cant fight. All those you conquer are your slaves, all of the possesions they have are booty, and you must give 10% to the Imams.

We MUST maintain nothing less than constant vigilance in regard to the role(s) that Syria plays. Based upon its;
1. terrorist history
2. teachings of hate
3. decades of ''being in bed'' with Iran
4. attempts to procure nuclear, chem and bio weapons (of mass destruction)
5. mass murder of internal opponents
6. engaging in continuous deception
... to state a few ...
Make no mistake about it. The dangers and horrible consequences which Syrian policy portends, should never be minimized!

And now another horrible suspicion is crossing their minds. Did Bush''s Israel-first advisers invade Iraq in order to assure that Israel would have easy access to oil?

A March 31 Ha''aretz article reported upcoming plans to reopen a long-unused pipeline from Iraq''s Kirkuk oil fields to the Israeli port of Haifa. Israel''s National Infrastructure Minister Joseph Paritzky suggested that after Saddam Hussain''s departure Iraqi oil could flow to the Jewish state, to be consumed or marketed from there.

This is the real reason for wanting the current Syrian government out. Notice it does not just say oil for consumption, it says oil to be marketed. Israel wants to start dealing in oil even though there is none under their country. Since they really don''t have any natural resources they will eventually have to find a way to create revenue. since nobody in the region wants to do business with them they probably will not be able to rely on the service industry either. If the U.S. market crashes they will loose their investments as well. This however should not be anybody elses problem.
