(CBS/AP)  The most prominent figure in a revolt of Sunni sheiks against al Qaeda in Iraq was killed Thursday in an explosion near his home in Anbar province.

Abdul-Sattar Abu Risha was leader of the Anbar Salvation Council, also known as the Anbar Awakening - an alliance of clans backing the Iraqi government and U.S. forces.

CBS News chief foreign correspondent Lara Logan reports that when Abu Risha chose America to be his ally against al Qaeda, he became a marked man.

Motivated by the murder of his own family members, he took on al Qaeda in the most public way - using a TV commercial to recruit Sunnis for a police force in Anbar that until then, no one would join.

As the region's security improved, he flaunted his elevated status with everyone from Iraq's Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to GOP presidential hopeful John McCain.

And just 10 days ago, he publicly celebrated with President Bush - the relationship applauded as a model for defeating terrorism.

With the U.S. success in Anbar province showcased in Washington this week, it's hardly surprising that America's enemies would strike back. The question is what impact that will have on U.S. efforts to build similar relationships with the Sunni populations in other parts of Iraq.

Today in Ameriyah, Logan saw first-hand how the same model has turned one of Baghdad's most violent Sunni neighborhoods into a much more peaceful place. Fourteen soldiers were killed in Ameriyah during a recent one-month period. They've gone from that to not having a single attack in the last month, thanks largely to another influential Sunni Sheikh, Khaled al Obeidi - also from Anbar province.

U.S. soldiers mix easily with his gunmen - former insurgents the army now calls "volunteers."

Together they say they've driven al Qaeda from most of Ameriyah, much the same way Sheikh Sattar helped drive them Anbar. When news of today's assasination broke, Sheik al Obeidi said this would not stop him and blamed those working on behalf of Iran.

"They sabotage any project that unites Sunnis and makes them powerful," he said.

If the U.S. can't protect its new-found allies, they risk losing everything they've gained.

In Washington, meahile, Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman said U.S. forces provideed personal security for Abu Risha -- at one point even parking an M-1 tank outside his house. While U.S forces did train his security detail, Whitman said he currently was being protected by his own people.

A Ramadi police officer said Abu Risha had received a group of poor people at his home earlier in the day, as a gesture of charity marking the beginning of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. The officer, speaking on condition of anonymity out of security concerns, said authorities believed the bomb was planted by one of the guests.

A senior member of Abu Risha's group, Sheik Jubeir Rashid, called the assassination a "criminal act" and blamed al Qaeda.

It was not the first time Abu Risha and his colleagues have been targeted.

In June, a suicide bomber blew himself up in the lobby of Baghdad's Mansour Hotel during a meeting of U.S.-linked Sunni tribal leaders, killing 13 people and wounding 27.

Among those killed was the former governor of Anbar and sheik of the al-Bu Nimir tribe, Fassal al-Guood - a key ally of Abu Risha. A day later, al Qaeda in Iraq claimed responsibility for the attack.

Al Quaeda is like the mafia. You''re either with them or against them, it doesn''t matter if you''re a Muslim or an infidel.

This is an implicit admission that they''ve lost the battle for the hearts and minds of Sunnis in Iraq and so they have to resort to the intimidation of their Muslim brothers. That''s good for us. Thanks for being a schmuk as usual, Al Zawari!

They did the same thing in Afghanistan when they assassinated the leader of the Northern Alliance right before our invasion. They were losing support, so someone had to die. Of course, it wasn''t them. Martydom is always for someone else, never for OBL or Al Zawari or Omar.

While conservative Americans cling to the fear of
an Al Quaeda base of operations in Iraq, AQ knows they''ve lost any hope of being an influence in a Shiite dominated future Iraq where the Sunni minority is looking elsewhere for protection and the Kurds have walled them and everyone else off.

Nice smile, was that the smile of death from Clueless George. Just as George Duma$$ Bush and his allies were gloating about all of the PROGRESS being made in Iraq reality sets in again. I wonder what kind of SPIN the Whitehouse is going to put on this. Many of the Iraqi citizens view anyone who sides with the occupying as traitors. If our country was invaded by imperialists what would we call Americans who sided with the enemy? If we spent five trillion dollars and 100,000 more GIs wasted their lives in Iraq there would STILL not be any peace. This seems to be obvious to most rational thinking people except that our IDIOT Chimp-in-Chief, and the neo-fascist who follow him blindly like lemmings, are anything but that.

Thomas Jefferson knew about fascist nazi islam..... he killed plenty of them....

In 1786 Jefferson and John Adams went to negotiate with Tripoli''s envoy to London, Ambassador Sidi Haji Abdrahaman or (Sidi Haji Abdul Rahman Adja). They asked him by what right he extorted money and took slaves. Jefferson reported to Secretary of State John Jay, and to the Congress:

The ambassador answered us that [the right] was founded on the Laws of the Prophet (Mohammed), that it was written in their Koran, that all nations who should not have answered their authority were sinners, that it was their right and duty to make war upon them wherever they could be found, and to make slaves of all they could take as prisoners, and that every Mussulman who should be slain in battle was sure to go to heaven.[1]

It is encouraging to see that Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) stood up on the Senate floor today to defend General Petraeus and to say what most Americans have been feeling:

"Now, anyone who has had the opportunity to meet the General, and anybody who has bothered to follow his career or his academic pursuits, knows that these are dangerous and unwarranted allegations. However, there might be a silver lining to this slander. Libel, really, because it was printed The New York Times. lars008,
I agree with you about the threat posed by Islam, since Islam is nothing but a sect of christianty. First step in confronting islam is to destroy the root of it named christianty. chcek out the following verses of muslim book quran;

When the angels said: "O mary, God gives you good news of a word from him (god), whose name is the Messiah Jesus, son of Mary, revered in this world and the Hereafter, and one of those brought near (to God). He will speak to the people from his cradle and as a man, and he is of the righteous." She said:" My Lord, how can I have a child when no mortal has touched me?" He said: "So (it will be). God creates what he wills. If he decrees a thing, He says to it only, "Be!" and it is" (Quran, 3:45-47)

The case of Jesus with God is like the case of Adam. He created him from dust, and then He said to him, "Be!" and he came into being. (Quran, 3:59)

"I have come to you with a sign from your Lord. I make for you the shape of a boird out of clay, I breathe into it, and it becomes a bird by God''s permission. I heal the blind from the birth and leper. And I bring the dead to life by God''s permission. And I tell you what you eat and what you store in your houses" (Quran, 3:49)

Behold! The angels said:"O Mary! Allah has chosen you and purified you-chosen you above the women of all nations." (Quran 3:42)

At length she brought the (babe) to her people, carrying him. They said: "O Mary! Truly an amazing thing has you brought!
"O sister of Aaron! Your father was not a man of evil, nor was your mother an unchaste woman!"
But she pointed to the babe. They said: "How can we talk to one who is a child in the cradle?"
He said I am indeed a servant of Allah: He has given me Revelation and made me a prophet;
"And he has made me blessed whosesoever I be, and has enjoined on me Prayer and Charity as long as I live;
"He has made me kind to my mother, and not overbearing or miserable;
"So peace is on me the day I was born, the day that I die and the day I shall be raised up to life (again)"!
Such was Jesus the son of Mary: it is a statement of truth about which they vainly dispute. (Quran 19:27-34)

perception5,

Look at the population size of America. It is huge compared to Iraq.

If the number of people killed since 2003 in Iraq were killed in America adjusted for population size we would lose 25 million people.

What happens on the streets of an American city is not the result of another country occupying them. We have no occupying soldiers walking around. We have no civil war raging between Catholics and baptist.

What is happening in an American city HAS NOTHING in common with Iraq cities and it is totally stupid to make the comparision.

Oh really senator - where have you been - talk about head in the sand!!

Running for Max Cleland''s Georgia Senate seat in 2002, the Republican Chambliss questioned his opponent''s patriotism. You may recall he even ran TV ads with photos of Cleland alongside those of Osama Bin Laden and Saddam Hussein. The ads were roundly maligned at the time as a new low in political dirty tricks. But, of course, they had the desired effect...... Chambliss won.

Libel, really, because it was printed [in the] The New York Times. Now, all of America understands [why] MoveOn.org and other groups like it are called the ''nutroots'' of our society. These people are nuts and they don''''t care who they hurt, they don''t care who they smear they don''t care who they libel. Politics is more important than anything else and power is the most important anything of all."

Priceless, Senator. And right on target.

You liberals don''t yet know what a fatal mistake you have made.

The case of Jesus with God is like the case of Adam. He created him from dust, and then He said to him, "Be!" and he came into being. (Quran, 3:59)

"I have come to you with a sign from your Lord. I make for you the shape of a bird out of clay, I breathe into it, and it becomes a bird by God''s permission.

He said I am indeed a servant of Allah: He has given me Revelation and made me a prophet;
"And he has made me blessed whosesoever I be, and has enjoined on me Prayer and Charity as long as I live;
"He has made me kind to my mother, and not overbearing or miserable;
"So peace is on me the day I was born, the day that I die and the day I shall be raised up to life (again)"!
Such was Jesus the son of Mary: it is a statement of truth about which the vainly dispute. (Qur''''an 19:27-34)

It seems the Repugs never gave up on attacking the messengers of news they don''''t like - we still have a free press and live in a free country irregarless of what Repugs are trying to get people to think .... AMERICA will never be under a DICTATORSHIP ! Cheers !

We may just have to take it down then...the whole thing. When we have a government that is so OBVIOUSLY headed in the WRONG direction and WE the PEOPLE can''t turn it around then that Government does NOT represent us. Right now I honestly wouldn''t life a finger to protect or defend the Bush Administration. As far as I''m concerned they are nothing but traitors. By the time our next President is sworn in, that person will be taking a nation close to if not bankrupt and a Military that is Broken or close to it. That isn''t right.

Another day, another Bu$h failure. Could he be more incompetent? The only thing that you can count on with Bu$h is that everything he touches will surely turn to sh*t.

what religion was muhammad ali baba before he tried to convert to judaism haji???

%u201CAt Medina he expected the Jews to recognize the agreement between his teaching and theirs, and to own him as a prophet in the true succession, perhaps as the Messiah for whom they were waiting. The Moslems, when they prayed, turned their faces toward Jerusalem; the Day of Atonement was made a solemn fast for Moslems, the one great fast in the year. Mohammed did not see why if he acknowledged Moses and his Torah, the Jews should not acknowledge him and his Koran.

What we are seeing in Anbar is a joke. The violence across Iraq is only marginally less than the high of 2006 after the bombing of the mosque.

So we are suppose to think that because the violence in Anbar is somewhat less than the overall violence in Iraq that constitutes real progress in Iraq???

No it does not. First of all, the surge had nothing to do with Anbar.

Second, Anbar is a 99.9% Sunni province. No Shiites around to fight with.

Thirdly the Sunnis SAID PLAINLY that they are going to attack the Shiite govn when they are ready.

So we are arming and training them so they can turn around and attack the central govn.

Well, you know, since the central govn has accomplished NOTHING, maybe that isn''t such a bad idea.
