Journalist Lawrence Wright Knows More About Al Qaeda's Leader Than Many CIA Operatives

(CBS)  "I actually did wonder what I would do if I had the opportunity to interview bin Laden. Because, you know, am I a citizen or am I reporter?" He said. "It crossed my mind that if I had the opportunity to interview him, I really ought to just kill him."

But if that opportunity came to pass, Wright said he would have to act as a reporter.

"Honestly, I would interview him," he said.

Wright wasn't a spy, but spies were spying on him. The FBI came to his house and wanted to know about some of the calls he made to a certain number in England.

"And then they asked if I could identify a person named Caroline Wright, who's my daughter. You know, she's not a terrorist [but] she went to high school with the Bush twins," he said. "Were they listening to my calls? I don't know. I asked them, you know, but they wouldn't answer."

The title of Wright's book, "The Looming Tower," is from a favorite passage of bin Laden's in the Koran - "Wherever you are Death will find you, even in the looming tower."

"He thought that the war should be taken to the looming towers of America," Wright said.

Wright's one-man show, called "My Trip to al Qaeda," ran for six weeks off-Broadway at a theater near Ground Zero, and later this month it will be opening at the Kennedy Center in Washington.

"Washington is the one place where I think it really needs to be seen," he said. "I want people in the political and the intelligence community to have a chance to see this and get a sense of the background of the people that they're really struggling against. I think one thing they'll learn is something about what's happened to our country as a result of those strikes: you know, the compromises that we made on our civil liberties. These are dangerous adjustments in our country."

It's something Wright was thinking about even before 9/11 when he wrote this bit of dialogue for Denzel Washington in "The Seige" in a scene in which a terror suspect is being interrogated:

"Bend the law. Shred the constitution. Because if we torture him - and let's call it what it is - you and I - then the country, men like us have sworn to defend and died to defend, is gone, and they've won."

But when Wright compares the United States portrayed in his movie and the United States as it is today, his outlook is somewhat bleak.

"'The Siege' has a happy ending," he noted.
