Sept. 11 And Since
Reflecting on the events of Sept. 11, 2001, the day that changed America.
But informed sources tell CBS News U.S. intelligence believes Osama bin Laden is hiding out in the Chitral district of northern Pakistan. A number of reports from human sources, including some alleged sightings, have put him there, reports CBS News national security correspondent David Martin.
None of the reports has been independently confirmed, but there are enough of them to persuade intelligence analysts that it's his most likely location.
Chitral is a remote, rugged area governed by tribes that will not allow even the Pakistani army to operate there.
"They have a code of hospitality for guests, and they've probably also gotten a fair amount of money from bin Laden," says Daniel Benjamin of the Brookings Institute, who tracked bin Laden during the Clinton administration. He believes bin Laden is surrounded by body guards armed with surface-to-air missiles and good intelligence.
"I think it's quite likely he has a very good early warning system (and) that there are perimeters set up so people know who's coming and going in the area that he's living," Benjamin said.
Before 9/11, bin Laden's deputy Ayman al Zawahiri always seemed to be at his side. But no longer.
"They're separated for good reasons," says Benjamin. "Most countries don't let their top two people travel together or undertake anything that would be risky together."
Last year, a U.S. missile strike narrowly missed Zawahiri after the CIA tracked him to a meeting of senior al Qaeda operatives south of Chitral. Al Qaeda seems willing to risk Zawahiri in order to protect bin Laden.
"It seems like they've made a decision that bin Laden will have a much higher level of operational security," Benjamin says. "Zawahiri will take more risks and is probably in a more accessible place."
So far, it's working. The only proof U.S. intelligence has that bin Laden is even alive are his own videos.

See all 243 CommentsPart of me freaked just a wee bit to get this confirmation, but after calming down does Bin Laden really have the clout he once did after being off the scene for 6 years holed away in Pakistan with his funds frozen? Let''s not make the same mistake of thinking because Saddam at one time was able to take over Kuwait that he was still a threat by 2003 . . . like if we can get him great but let''s not just start bombing Pakistan indiscriminately thereby inflaming a country with nukes just to kill a paper tiger . . .

That''s like something a Republican fan would say . . . gee I wonder why he''s such a fan of Repubs . . .
Even though I''m a Barack supporter, I thought he sounded kind of brash when he made that statement about bombing Pakistan a couple of weeks ago that Hillary had a field day with. But now I''m thinking geez, he was right on ''target'' with that assessment just like he was about the war in Iraq being a mistake . . . maybe bombing Pakistan ought to get more consideration, I don''t know . . .
Are you really that ignorant? 9/11 was being planned while Clinton was still in office. Its uninformed people like you spreading lies and mistruths about 9/11 that is greatly contributing to the ignorance of the American public as a whole. Try actually researching the topic before running your mouth.

Next thing you know the USA will get hit again because the Islamofacist OBL dont like the MAYOR elected by small town, USA. I can just hear it now..."If only we didnt have those elections, OBL would not have HIT us again".
Is it my imagination or does the speech sound much like the same corporate hating, democracy hating, revisionist history and conspiracy theories we keep hearing from the far left liberals here in the US and in posted comments here on CBS.
Hmmm, I wonder if Adam Ghadan the traitors PARENTS post on here? Does our government keep track of them?

Re: "Where Is Osama Bin Laden?"
Who cares?
Even if the long-dead Osama was actually responsible for all of the attacks that are attributed to him, we know that the illegitimate Bush cabal is responsible for the pointless and unnecessary deaths of more Americans than Osama, and the mass-murder and torture of far more Iraqis and Afghans, than Osama and Saddam combined.
Who cares about the fake Osama video, or where he is buried, when the illegitimate Bush cabal remains at-large, and continues their mass-murder and torture rampage, and remain the number one threat to our country and to our Constitution?
A simple question is, despite of the U.S and NATO''s presence in Afghanistan, how and why the Afghans manage to grow opium and drugs? the percentage has been raised to about 60% more that it used to be before 2001. It should not be a surprise. TO stop terrorism, one must also control drugs and arms smuggling.

Yes, that is what I am asking; it is not that simple. All black money goes to Alkhaeeda and Taliban. We must stop drugs and arms smuggling at an international level, otherwise this cycle will continue forever:
Cutivate drugs - smuggle arms - Share money and interests with global leaders and corrupt politicians who allow to smuggle weapons and drugs - Fire those weapons on U.S and NATO - Kill innocent - Curb human rights - Impose our own version of Islam - Start again from begining.

President Bush''s trademark struggles with the finer points of public speaking were on full display Friday, when he thanked his "Austrian" hosts for inviting him to this year''s "OPEC" summit.
The "Language Mangler-in-Chief" was in Australia attending the APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) summit. Along with misidentifying his host country and the name of the summit, Bush struggled to leave the lectern, trying to exit the stage the wrong way.
"Thank you for being such a fine host of the OPEC summit," Bush said to Australian prime minister John Howard. He quickly corrected himself, "APEC summit," and joked Howard "invited me to the OPEC summit next year. (Such an invitation would be impossible because neither the US or Australia are members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries.)

Neo-Cons Enlist Bin Laden''s Help To Counter 9/11 Truth
Discredited Pentagon-affiliated IntelCenter to release another dubious tape right when Bush needs it most, Osama pops up hours after new Zogby poll shows Americans want new 9/11 investigation for second time running

The U.S. government, via its closely affiliated IntelCenter front, is to release a new tape of Osama Bin Laden on the sixth anniversary of 9/11 in a desperate ploy to counter 9/11 truth and a new Zogby poll that again proves the majority of Americans are highly suspect of the official story.
A pre-released image shows an apparently older looking Bin Laden with a dyed dark brown beard, meaning the individual in the tape is either a body double or the terror master has been using Grecian Formula 16 in between his dashing from cave to cave across the mountainous Pakistani border region.
This administration achieves its objectives through fear. Bin Laden is an effective tool in such a campaign.

In an online editorial yesterday, Joel S. Hirschhorn, PhD, former Senior Staff Member of the Congressional Office of Technology Assessment (OTA), called for a new investigation of 9/11. %u201CFirst, let the technical truth emerge. Then, if necessary, cope with the inevitable political, conspiracy and other questions. You may be right about 911 being planned while Clinton was still in office. But planned by whom, and who knew about it in advance, or are you making that decision in hindsight?
On whose watch did 911 occur (nine months into their administration?
Who ignored warnings that planned terrorist attacks, using hijacked liners, were in the works?
Who sat on their backside until it was over and did nothing, even during the hours it took to complete.
Who had authority to order air force jets to intercept known hijacked planes and did nothing.
Who has extremely close ties with the Bin Ladens and flew them out of the country immediately after 911?
Who immediately blamed Osama /Al Qeada for 911 and, with full support of the american people, immediately went after the Talaban in Afghanistan?
Who quickly abandoned the effort in Afghanistan and attacked Iraq, almost guaranteeing Osama would not be found?
Who has 911 benefited the most?
There are hundreds of other questions, the answers to which are too horrible for most Americans to contemplate, that they just shrug them off as conspiracy theories.

Re: "Curiuous how the ramblings of the loonie left and Bin Laden appear to mirror each other more and more."
This is hardly curious. When the Bush regime pumps out fake "Osama" videos in order to prop up their failed policies, and to demonize any opposition to their desperate last gasp fascisitic drive, it is expected that the message of their imaginary enemies would match that of their dissenters.
This is by design, and meant to embolden their ever-shrinking minority of boot/arse-lickers and apologists.
Having been proven wrong on every single issue, the Bush dead-enders have only fiction remaining from which to appease their delusions and craven paranoia.
Funny how the random mass murder of the Nazi right and Bin Laden appear to mirror each other more and more.
