Where Is Osama Bin Laden?

Sources Tell CBS News U.S. Intelligence Believes Al Qeada Leader Is In Chitral District Of Northern Pakistan

(CBS)  As Osama bin Laden urges Americans to convert to Islam in a new video released Friday, the al Qaeda leader's location remains a mystery.

But informed sources tell CBS News U.S. intelligence believes Osama bin Laden is hiding out in the Chitral district of northern Pakistan. A number of reports from human sources, including some alleged sightings, have put him there, reports CBS News national security correspondent David Martin.

None of the reports has been independently confirmed, but there are enough of them to persuade intelligence analysts that it's his most likely location.

Chitral is a remote, rugged area governed by tribes that will not allow even the Pakistani army to operate there.

"They have a code of hospitality for guests, and they've probably also gotten a fair amount of money from bin Laden," says Daniel Benjamin of the Brookings Institute, who tracked bin Laden during the Clinton administration. He believes bin Laden is surrounded by body guards armed with surface-to-air missiles and good intelligence.

"I think it's quite likely he has a very good early warning system (and) that there are perimeters set up so people know who's coming and going in the area that he's living," Benjamin said.

Before 9/11, bin Laden's deputy Ayman al Zawahiri always seemed to be at his side. But no longer.

"They're separated for good reasons," says Benjamin. "Most countries don't let their top two people travel together or undertake anything that would be risky together."

Last year, a U.S. missile strike narrowly missed Zawahiri after the CIA tracked him to a meeting of senior al Qaeda operatives south of Chitral. Al Qaeda seems willing to risk Zawahiri in order to protect bin Laden.

"It seems like they've made a decision that bin Laden will have a much higher level of operational security," Benjamin says. "Zawahiri will take more risks and is probably in a more accessible place."

So far, it's working. The only proof U.S. intelligence has that bin Laden is even alive are his own videos.

Part of me freaked just a wee bit to get this confirmation, but after calming down does Bin Laden really have the clout he once did after being off the scene for 6 years holed away in Pakistan with his funds frozen? At least bin Laden admits in this latest video that the reason he ordered 9/11 was because Bush surrounded himself with murderers. This is the first clear evidence that 9/11 would not have happened if Gore was allowed to count his votes and was elected president as he was suppose to be.

The things are not that simple. Being an Indian, I know very well that it is not a difficult task to capture Bin Laden. The problem is that there is a drugs and arms network run by these terrorists and they traffic drugs into EU as well as other parts of the world. In almost any country, they have links to the drug smugglers. In many of these drug smugglers, one can assume there are also many of the so called politicians those are elected in every country. So how would the drug smugglers tolerate anyone and how would we be able to finish the network.
A simple question is, despite of the U.S and NATO''s presence in Afghanistan, how and why the Afghans manage to grow opium and drugs? the percentage has been raised to about 60% more that it used to be before 2001. It should not be a surprise. TO stop terrorism, one must also control drugs and arms smuggling.

You may be right about 911 being planned while Clinton was still in office. But planned by whom, and who knew about it in advance, or are you making that decision in hindsight?

On whose watch did 911 occur (nine months into their administration?
Who ignored warnings that planned terrorist attacks, using hijacked liners, were in the works?
Who sat on their backside until it was over and did nothing, even during the hours it took to complete.
Who had authority to order air force jets to intercept known hijacked planes and did nothing.
Who has extremely close ties with the Bin Ladens and flew them out of the country immediately after 911?
Who immediately blamed Osama /Al Qeada for 911 and, with full support of the american people, immediately went after the Talaban in Afghanistan?
Who quickly abandoned the effort in Afghanistan and attacked Iraq, almost guaranteeing Osama would not be found?
Who has 911 benefited the most?

There are hundreds of other questions, the answers to which are too horrible for most Americans to contemplate, that they just shrug them off as conspiracy theories.
