D.C. Asks Supreme Court To Uphold Gun Ban

(AP)  The District of Columbia on Tuesday asked the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn a ruling that struck down the city's 30-year-old ban on private handgun ownership.

If the Supreme Court takes the case, it could lead to the high court's first direct ruling on the Second Amendment since 1939.

Mayor Adrian Fenty announced the appeal on the steps of police headquarters.

"The bottom line is we do not need more guns in this city," Fenty said.

A federal appeals court panel ruled in March that the district's broad gun law was unconstitutional.

The law bars residents from keeping handguns in their homes and prohibits the carrying of a gun without a license. Registered firearms such as rifles and shotguns must be kept unloaded and disassembled or fitted with trigger locks.

Fenty noted that the appeals court ruling deals specifically with the issue of guns in the home, saying it does not affect the ban on carrying handguns on the street.

The law remains in effect during the appeals process.

erasmus6/Dear. I have tv. I watch it as it shows me things I other wise can''t see. I rather not see violance, so switch it over. Parents won''t. USA went to a system. A rate of the programme. I can watch as I wish. Children can''t and should not. Foster Mums would ban what she felt our minds should not take in in the home. She felt it best.
The Barbie,GI Joe Dolls, guns ,send the wrong message to the girls and boys. As well as the so thin. I heard a child girl in store talking stuff she should not..dieting. I would say a 6 to 9 year old.Her Mum putting that in her head. Men are just as bad in this..The line * I want a slin, trim ptretty woman she best remain so.* It won''t work..we all age..Parents/care givers are the ones that must step on to the plate to teach the children.
We don''t need a nanny govt to do the right thing. The laziness of the care takers who think of * me,myself, and I *parent. *Do yer own thing parent.
I never bought the mags. They are worthless to a legally blind person. We had a dress code and what the girl wear or should I say lack of is banned by my personal dress code. There is no need for baggy pants as they can be used to hide a gun or what have ye. There are places that ban that look.

I agree that the t.v. is to blame for the way kids are today. All they see is violence and s-e-x. It is no wonder that kids are so messed up.

Also, so many kids are becoming anorexic from reading fashion magazines and watching all these skinny models. It is time people wised up and started being responsible.

Just think, if everybody stopped buying the magazines and turned off the t.v., that would sure straighten them out pretty quick, wouldn''t it? Of course we know that would never happen!

erasmus6,Dear. I was in high school and wrote verse for home work. Now I read the stories and felt I could say it in verse. So I hoped someone would enjoy. So I just write. I am so happy you like. IF you wish to write my verses in a notebook so you can enjoy. Do but give me the credit in the name Barbara Ann. I had no idea they would touch others as that is my hope. I just write verse for the joy of it plus hope it will help. Thanks.
Oothers hope I will change my mind on the guns. I can''t see the bloody thing. My room mate has told me this *I don''t understand why they take a gun to a fist fight*. I told him it makes no sense. The TV is the blame as kids see their favourite person shot to death in a fight in the programme they see. The next week''s show he/she is a live. There is no sense to that. In Marysville a 17 year old shot his 16 year old brother. Where were the teen''s parents. The gun is a kid''s paws. Grt that bloody thing out of the home. No need for it there.

erasmus6 Dearest... Yes I have seen here in Seattle in a store We were shopping and in line to pay our things. A man had to. I had to show ID to buy things that something in them to make street drugs. Tell ue the limit of the items and they demand ID. It pissed me. Everyone if it is on a list. Everyboby...It is not the America I grew in. I try to tell like is as best I can. Nobody trust one other anymore. The first time my room mate was asked for ID and they filling out the data on some bloody form. I ask as a blind person what are yer doing. I also suffer from C/P. I am so scared that my handicaps could be used against me. I upset due to them. That could mean my death. Plus the abuse I try so hard to forget. The more I fight my handicaps the worse they become. So I stay inside. My prisom is my body. That is the truth. If it was not for the kindness of one person I would not be sharing this by computer.

"Laws that forbid the carrying of arms . . . disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes . . . Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man."
- Thomas Jefferson quoting criminologist Cesare Beccaria

rheola you said..I realize I am on a touchy subject, and will fully understand if you disagree.

Yes, it is a touchy subject if people cant discuss sensibl... and you are right in what you say..I do go to church sometimes, and I myself was amazed at parts of the old testament, particularly before Moses. I think the first fight was Abram, who had built up an army to protect his people from marauding kings and when they captured his nephew (Lot), Abram sent his army to rescue him, as any loving relative would do if he had the means.
It appears that there were times that they were attacked and fought back, but there were time when they also went out and killed people, for which I don''t understand.
But from Moses time on the commandments were to NOT commit murder, to love your enemies etc, which is where the Christian basis it''s beliefs on, and follow the example of their leader, ''Christ'' who preached peace, love etc. unlike Mohammad who said that it was unfitting for a prophet to take captives until he had made a great slaughter and to slaughter all who would not submit in the whole world..

Wasn''t Ireland a different matter. Wasn''t it more that one side objected to the English coming down and taking over, it just happened that one side was catholic and the other Protestant, and the Irish wanted to protect their lands from the English..
Of course here I could be wrong, as I don''t really know much about that part..

In one of your posts you said something about having to fill out paper work and show ID to buy razor blades and cough items.

REALLY? Everybody does?
