Katie Couric Talks To Top U.S. Commander In Iraq Before Upcoming Report To Congress

CBS News' visit involved extensive security afforded any four-star general, but Petraeus told Couric that you can feel when a place is dangerous. He believes this one is not.

"Some people might be watching this and saying this is a nice dog and pony show. Yeah, there are some areas of calm, but if you look at the country as a whole, it's still a nightmare," said Couric.

"If you look at the country as a whole, there is an unacceptable level of violence. But that level of violence, the number of ethno-sectarian deaths, you name it, the number of incidents [Sunni-Shia] has been reduced dramatically," he said. "That's not to say there are not places where it is very, very tough. The question is which way is it headed, and I think it's headed up."

Is it "headed up" enough to start reducing U.S. troop levels in Iraq? On Monday, while talking to troops in Anbar Province, President Bush raised the possibility. When Couric sat down with Petraeus following the tour, he left the door open.

"As you know, Sen. John Warner ... after a visit to Iraq, said some troops must come home by Christmas. Do you agree with that?" asked Couric.

"Wait and see when I offer my recommendations to Congress," Petraeus replied. "The surge has to run its course. There's no question about that. The question is how can you make adjustments to the force to bring the force levels down and retain what we have fought so hard to achieve?"

This is an example of buying votes. It was probably cheaper when candidates gave liquor or money for votes. The result is the same only now taxpayers, not the candidates or their political parties, pay the bill.

Paul Brinkley, deputy under secretary of defense in charge of business transformation, said Tuesday that the U.S. government spent $180 million of that total in July alone on Iraqi goods and services.

But he acknowledged that U.S. companies, which have many questions and concerns about production and stability in Iraq, are still slow to stock Iraqi products. Considering the state of play in Iraq, Brinkley said, people are cautious about placing orders for Iraqi goods.

I think you confused our President with Saddam! Perhaps you have forgotten the reason we are in Iraq. Hundreds of thousands of Iraqians have been brutally tortured, maimed, murdered, raped, gassed, publicly shot in front of family members, kidnapped never to be seen again, blown up, thrown in prison for life just for believing in something different, dipped alive in sulferic acid until there skin melts away and then thrown in their front yard as a lesson to others etc, etc......! Iraq defied all it''s neighbors, the UN, America and even the majority of it''s own people. This war was set in motion long before our President took office! I know many dems and lefties claim they were lied to about WMD but deep down they knew he had them and they didn''t have 100% confermation that saddam didn''t. None of your argument''s hold enough information to really matter at this point. Face the facts, our country is at war with terrorist not other countries. If Iraq wasn''t harboring terrorist you must be blind. Tell that to the families of our fallen soldiers. Yes, how can bring force levels down and retain what we have fought so hard to achieve? So many have died - a lot of families traumatized. What''s the alternative? Leaving Iraq and getting the troops home? Strange, no one talks about what will happen to the remaining Iraqis and those who supported the Coalition. Those are families traumatized there, too. History shows us the results of a rushed departure or retreat by occupiers - it''s a blood bath. Some impressions will also be reinforced about America - 1) It does not have the stomach for war; 2) its high tech military is well, overrated; and 3) it doesn''t have the backbone to protect its allies (sorry, ... but Japan, Korea, Taiwan, etc. will be scratching their heads if the US does abandon Iraq). Indeed, what happens when al-Quaeda, the Mehdi Army, or simple thugs move in? I''m almost sure they will trumphet Islam, bash Judaism and Christianity - and the whole cycle gets repeated for another 100 years. Remember Beruit? Yes, unfortunately America went into this war basically alone and because of its "go it alone cowboy attitude," the world seems to treat this as an "American" problem which it itself created and must fix itself. This mindset has to changed. I see it as an international problem. The UN and the Arab League should help to hold the ground that was hard won and fought so the success stories we read about in Fallujah and the Anbar province continue until Iraq is finally secure.
