Poll: Little Progress Seen Since Katrina

By
Joel Roberts
(CBS)  Two years after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, fewer than half of Americans think progress is being made in rebuilding the region - and a sizeable percentage questions the government's ability to respond to similar natural disasters.

According to a CBS News poll released Tuesday, 45 percent of Americans say at least some progress has been made, but just 9 percent say there's been a lot of progress. One third says little or no progress has been made.

HOW MUCH PROGRESS HAS BEEN MADE IN REBUILDING THE GULF COAST?

A lot

Some
36%
Not much/none
34%
Don't know
21%

These views show little improvement in opinion since August 2006, the one-year anniversary of Katrina's landfall and the levee breaks.

More Americans (59 percent) now say they have confidence in the government's ability to handle natural disasters than said so immediately after Katrina. But nearly four in 10 (39 percent) still express little or no confidence that the government can respond to such disasters.

CONFIDENCE IN GOVERNMENT'S ABILITY TO RESPOND TO NATURAL DISASTERS

Great deal
16%
Fair amount
43%
Not very much
30%
None
9%

There's a sharp racial divide in views of how much progress has been made since Katrina. Blacks, who were particularly hard hit by the hurricane, are much less likely than whites to see significant progress in rebuilding the region.

Just 2 percent of African Americans say there's been a lot of progress, and another 18 percent say there's been some. Among whites, 11 percent say there's been a lot of progress, while 38 percent say there's been some.

Blacks are also less confident than whites in the government's ability to respond to natural disasters: 42 percent of African Americans have at least some confidence, while 54 percent have little or none. Among whites, 61 percent have at least some confidence.

There are political differences on this question, too. Republicans are more confident than Democrats that the government can handle natural disasters like Katrina. But even among Republicans, just one in five say they have a great deal of confidence in the government.

This poll was conducted among a random sample of 1,214 adults nationwide, interviewed by telephone, Aug. 8-12, 2007. The error due to sampling for results based on the entire sample could be plus or minus three percentage points. The error for subgroups is higher. An oversample of African Americans was also conducted for this poll, for a total of 169 interviews among this group. The results were then weighted in proportion to the racial composition of the adult population in the U.S. Census. The margin of error for African Americans is plus or minus 8 percentage points.

Why is time and money being spent on rebuilding New Orleans? It is gone and should STAY gone. Only idiots would rebuild something that shouldn''t have been there in the first place. IT IS BELOW SEA LEVEL! This is only going to happen AGAIN.

Most people have moved on with there lives and are now living in other states with new homes and jobs. It would cost way too much for them to move back. And for the ones that are still sitting their in the trailers or whatever, who are still whining, well what can I say? They were probably whining and doing nothing, even before Katrina happened.

Of course fewer than half of Americans see progress in N.O. - they don''t live there, and the media would rather show bad news than good. So their views are based only on what they see on TV. This is perhaps the dumbest poll I ever seen here. It''s meaningless.

Personally, we would be better off without New Orleans. It''s the worst place in the world to build a city (below sea level), and it was the American equivalent of Sodom and Gomorrah.

Part 2:

2. When his PR people finally dragged Bush down to N.O. for a nicely staged press junket, what did Bush say? He said that His Federal Government would launch the biggest program since the "race to the moon" to reconstruct and rebuild N.O., creating a model for the whole world to see the greatness of the USA and its indomitable spirit. Sounds great! But what actually happened when Bush left and they turned out the lights again? Bush gave a few billion more dollars to Cheney''s cohorts in another no-bid contract and FEMA sent down a bunch of trailers for the "lucky" few who could get them. Nobody knows what happened to the $billions$, but we now know that those "lucky" ones received poisonous trailers which made them sick. Thanks, Georgie!

3. When it became clear that FEMA had totally failed to do their job, and that countless Americans had needlessly suffered and died due to their incompetence, what did little Georgie do? He told his friend, "You''re doing a great job, Brownie!"

I doubt that the "democratically controlled" government in LA is doing a very good job, but their hands have been tied by an uncooperative and even overtly hostile federal government, led by none other than Little Georgie Bush, He-who-promises-much-but-delivers-only-death-and-destruction.

No wonder the people of New Orleans are not happy with Little Georgie!

"Little Progress Seen Since Katrina"

That''s mainly due to the fact that the same people are in office who were in office prior to Katrina.

Libs won''t be happy until New Orleans is restored to its pre Katrina level.....63% black and 100% on welfare. Yep, the chocolate city will rise again! :)

Part 1:

Nothing brings out the conservative spin machine as much as a clear case of bald-faced lying by their lord, Gee Whiz Bush! Perception5, and others, are posting all over the place about how it is supposedly the Democrats fault for every problem in the big N.O. The truth is:

1. When he was warned by his own people that Katrina would hit the gulf region hard, and that much of N.O. would be destroyed and thousands of people would die, what did little Georgie do? Nothing! He just sat there, apparently oblivious. (After all, he is a War President! Little matters like the weather are of no consequence to "The Decider"! Besides, they''re just a bunch of democrats, so why not let them die?)

Americans should be allowed to live where ever they want, even if it''s below sea level in a hurricane zone. That don''t mean the rest of America should have to pay for people to live in such a stupid place to live and die.
