Mississippi became the first state to crack the 30 percent barrier for adult residents considered to be obese. West Virginia and Alabama are just slightly behind, according to the Trust for America's Health, a research group that focuses on disease prevention.
Colorado continued its reign as the leanest state in the nation with an obesity rate projected at 17.6 percent.
This year's report, for the first time, looked at obesity rates among children ages 10 to 17. The District of Columbia had the highest percentage — 22.8 percent. Utah had the lowest percentage of obese youth — 8.5 percent.
Officials at the Trust for America's Health advocate for the government to play a larger role in preventing obesity. People who are overweight are at an increased risk for diabetes, heart problems and other chronic diseases that contribute to greater health care costs.
"It's one of those issues where everyone believes this is an epidemic, but it's not getting the level of political and policymaker attention that it ought to," said Jeffrey Levi, the organization's executive director. "As every candidate for president talks about health care reform and controlling health care cost costs, if we don't hone in on this issue, none of their proposals are going to be affordable."
At the same time, many believe weight is a personal choice and responsibility. Levi doesn't dispute that notion, but he said society can help people make good choices.
"If we want kids to eat healthier food, we have to invest the money for school nutrition programs so that school lunches are healthier," he said. "If we want people to be more physically active, then there have to be safe places to be active. That's not just a class issue. We've designed suburban communities where there are no sidewalks for anybody to go out and take a walk."
To measure obesity rates, Trust for America's Health compares data from 2003-2005 with 2004-2006. It combines data from three years to improve the accuracy of projections. The data come from a survey of height and weight taken over the telephone by state health departments.
Generally, anyone with a body mass index greater than 30 is considered obese. The index is a ratio that takes into account height and weight. The overweight range is 25 to 29.9. Normal is 18.5 to 24.9. People with a large amount of lean muscle mass, such as athletes, can show a large body mass index without having an unhealthy level of fat.
The results of their survey are included in the report, "F as in Fat: How Obesity Policies Are Failing in America," which is available on the organization's Web site, healthyamericans.org

You''re repeating yourself.

Yah, your just a prophylactic
Unfortunately fat, sugar and salt in modern processed food tastes great. When was the last time you craved for a carrot.
However, I''ve just been told my blood pressure is through the roof, so carrots and cabbage it is from now on (yuck).
Of course Americans are getting fatter.
We''ve just had a spate of stories about how we get fatter because of our friends, because of a virus, and on and on.
It''s never our fault for eating too much.
...
These people are consciously stuffing their faces with food lacking in proper nutrition, developing into sickly, accident prone, deteriorating, undesriable beings, putting a burden on their family, friends and worse, society.
There needs to be more open, public rejection of fat people. They shouldn''t be allowed in restaurants, cabs, on public transportation, in theaters, schools, etc. They should be subject to job termination immediately if they get fat.
Enough is enough. If there are no consequences for being obese, then there are no incentives to stop gorging. Heavy ratings on insurance premiums don''t seem to help so how about public disgust? How about reducing the amount of food stamps to overweight recipients?
It sure doesn''t help when Oprah tells 200lb. women how beautiful they are after they lost 150 pounds. Who is she kidding? These women are beasts and everyone knows it but Oprah. Then they have the nerve to act like they''re actuallly "HOT".
Let''s restore the emphasis on physical education and recess in the public schools? We are breeding sedentary, sessile, physically useless beings, destined to major illnesses and short life spans.

a very shallow liberal solution to this problem is just ''throw up''..just like these liberal maidens do in hollywood..
They took recess,p.e out of the schools and now they whine about wt. I was 100 pbs. until 37. At 37 I went thru the change of life- no periods. That is when my wt went from 100 to 140. I could never put wt on before 37. I can''t lose it. I walk but can''t that well due to c/p and legal blindness. I am 52.
One of the problems is they drink pop, feed it to children is a nono. Some are over fed all ages.

Maybe we could also open concentration camps for the obese. Anyone who fails a government-mandated yearly physical could be sent to the gulag where they would be forced to exercise and fed nothing but lettuce and carrots, until they met the societally-required physical standards. Once they got too old to do this and put on weight, we could always mercifully terminate their miserable existences and save ourselves some money. "Sorry gramps, you''re the 21st century equivalent of the old Eskimo woman who gets left behind on the ice floe by her family". Yup, sounds like the nice caring country I''d like to live in.
you''ll see that the fattest people are in the south stretching from texas to west virginia...
take a look at the bible belt area of america...
it exactly overlaps the fattest states of america.
fat people and christian people...
nothing good comes out of the south.
You are a hate mongering fool. Ignorance defines you and a reflection of the dogs you evolved from. Do me a favor and drop dead, do the gene pool a favor! If you actually did that, the mean I.Q. of the nation would jump 5 points.
all the fat people are southern people.
christian people.
all the fattest states voted republican.
what does that tell you?
fat, christian, republican...
that''s the south for you, folks!
those southern christians are telling their people that the democrats will take away their food supply.
ha,ha,ha.
fat, happy, southern, christian and republican
that''s the south for you, folks!
ha,ha,ha.
that''s the south for you, folks!
bush country...christian country...republican country.
nothing good comes out of the south.
they''re harvesting all that cheese from those fat azzed dixie women.
grab yourself one of those obese southern mamas,
lift up that fat ol'' tittie and scrape yourself a handful of that dixie cheese.
hmmmm...foul, but aromatic.
don''t forget the saltines!

Obviously, all the best cooks are in the South.
Southern style cooking is the best in the nation.
word is that blue state democrats are threating to make all southern fried chicken franchises illegal...
this means war!

general william tecumseh sherman...time to come back from the grave and lay those southern states low again.
war, hate, fat people, bush lovers, bible thumpers, flag wavers...
that''s the south for you, folks!
Some have eating disorders, but with TV, video games and sedentary entertainment, we''re going to be saddled with generations of obese people who will put huge strains on our medical systems.
Educate these people and if they don''t react, tax the types of foods they eat.
..I am poor..so yer attacks those you don''t aprove of..Telling us..what to ..extersise when some with handicaps..can''t very well...get real , bogusbones you may be just the arse that has of the things you said it yer post...I am 52.
In fact, I believe a study would probably show that Americans are not necessarily eating more food, but are ingesting more unnatural additives in the foods they eat, but no one will do such a study, or release the results of such, as they would step on too many toes.
Eat, drink and be merry!! Cheers.
...and enjoying it more!

I think that would be a great idea - tax junk food. They put a tax on Cigarettes and Alcohol, and those two things kill people, right? Evidently, the high-calorie junk food is posing a health risk as well. Tax these food items, and make vegetables, fruits, etc. less expensive for the consumer - and help the farmers and ranchers as well! Nutritious food have gotten unbelievable expensive for the lower and middle classes, and fast-fix have become an inferior alternative. Also, smaller portions!!!! :O)
I love it in this country, you call a fat person, fatty, holy heel breaks out. Yet, call a person thats under weight, skinny, or make fun of them in any way, Weeellllll thats perfectly OK
Bullcrap, this country is out of whack, keep eating fattys.............LOL
Eat, drink and be merry!! Cheers.

GrammaWhamma, I''m what you would call a "health nut", who keeps down my weight because I would rather be healthy than sick. But I don''t put down those who have a problem with overweight. I have my own areas of imperfection, as we all do. I wish you well.
