One of the holiest days of year for Shiites marked amid increased tensions with Sunni Muslims.

(AP)  Iraqi authorities imposed an indefinite ban on all vehicles in the Baghdad area Saturday in advance of a major Shiite religious ceremony, government television announced.

News of the ban came hours after a car bomb killed seven people and wounded dozens near Baghdad's most important Shiite shrine. Sunni extremists have staged attacks in the past during Shiite festivals, which have drawn huge crowds since the 2003 ouster of Saddam Hussein's Sunni-dominated regime.

It was the second vehicle ban in Baghdad this month in connection with Shiite rituals.

The latest ban was ordered to protect Shiite pilgrims traveling to Karbala, 50 miles south of Baghdad, to attend ceremonies marking the birthday of the "Hidden Imam," a 9th century religious figure who devout Shiites believe will return to Earth to usher in the rule of peace.

The festival reaches its high point Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

The ban was widely expected even before Saturday's car bomb. It will cover all vehicles, motorcycles and bicycles as of 6 p.m. Saturday, the television quoted military spokesman Brig. Gen. Qassim al-Mousawi as saying.

Vehicles were banned in Baghdad from Aug. 8 through the morning of Aug. 11 during Shiite ceremonies honoring another Shiite saint, Imam Musa Kadhim, who is buried in the capital.

The noontime bombing in the Kazimiyah district of Baghdad occurred when a bomb hidden in a parked car exploded in busy Oruba Square about 500 yards from Imam Kadhim's tomb.

A medic at the local hospital said seven people were killed and 30 wounded, including two children.

Shop owner Hussein Abdul Rahman, who suffered minor shrapnel injuries, said the square was less crowded than usual because some many people had joined the pilgrimage to Karbala.

"Thank God — it could have been much worse than this," he said.

No group claimed responsibility, but suspicion fell on Sunni religious extremists who consider Shiites as heretics and collaborators with the Americans.

The U.S. command in Baghdad announced the grisly discovery of an execution site in the Arab Jabour area just south of the capital, a Sunni Arab area where al Qaeda in Iraq is known to operate.

During a 24-hour operation on Tuesday and Wednesday, soldiers found human skulls, decomposing bodies in a pit and bones wrapped in bloody clothes, U.S. spokesman Lt. Col. Christopher Garver said in a statement. Troops found blood spatter in a nearby building and other signs that executions had taken place there.

The troops took fire as they entered the area and shot back, killing one suspected terrorist, Garver said. Eight others were taken into custody, and the U.S. troops discovered homemade bombs and a weapons cache including trigger wires.

In a series of pre-dawn raids Saturday targeting al Qaeda in Iraq, U.S. forces killed three insurgent suspects and captured 17 others, Garver said.

Among those seized in an operation northeast of Samarra was a man who is suspected of providing money for weapons and other support to foreign fighters, and a suspected "associate" of senior al Qaeda leaders who had been sent to Beiji to set up operations there, he said.

In preparation for the ceremonies in Karbala, police asked hotel owners not to accept guests who have no passports or residency papers as protection against Sunni extremists infiltrating the crowds.

Police said vehicles would be banned from the city to prevent car bombings. Cordons of police checkpoints were being set up to protect the two major shrines that are the focal points of the ceremonies, said Raid Shakir Jawdat, Karbala's provincial police chief.

I think the only question left in this entire mess is how many more American''s will die before we get a leader with the guts to admit that George W. Bush is a FRAUD and INCOMPETENT! He was USED by the enemy within and the enemy who attacked us. American Fascist saw a chance with the attacks on 9/11 to take over some of the richest oil fields in the world and they had a Morally corrupt human in the office of President that could be used to accomplish that. They have failed and Bush has failed. The sad part is our nation has only begun to pay for the failures.

JFK would have been PROUD of BUSH !

Just as JFK wanted to bring Democracy and freedom to the areas of the world that were under terrible dictatorships, as a Democrat Progressive, so too has Bush attempted to liberate the poor people of IRAQ from the unspeakable evils of Saddam.

Bush is therefore a modern, brave poregressive, in the mold of JFK.

That the Iraqi people embraced DEMOCRACY is evident by their vote where over 95 % came out, risking life and family. Since then, what have we seen ? The OUTSIDE powers of IRAN and SYRIA, our true enemies, and the enemies of peace, have infiltrated to cause civil unrest. We are not killing innocent people, we are not firebombing children, or cutting off the heads of reporters.
These barbaric ISlamic Fascists- are. Do you support women''s rights ? If so, support and join the fight ! You can not be progressive if you do not support this war on radical islam.

So, all you muddle headed liberals, get your mind straight. We are fighting our enemies, the same guys who killed us on 9 11, and would kill us now. I say, thank God for Pres Bush and our brave men and women in uniform. Bush is a true JFK porgressive. BOMB IRAN . NUKEs ?
We need to now take the fight to IRAN, Hezbollah, Hamas. and Syria and be done with all this. They are our enemy. They are the enemy of all those who seek freedom. Wimps, commies.

Are you kidding? JFK would probably never have had any occasion to even associate with Bush, they came from different intellectual societies. Although we tend to give JFK more credit than he really deserves as an American president, he still would have recognized that Bush is a total light weight in terms of leadership, patriotism, and his qualifications to be any kind of president of the United States.

Pastdue: Isn''t Bush a graduate of Harvard Bus School. What are you smoking ?
The fact remains, if you are a progressive, as JFK was, you must be for bringing liberty and freedom to all people. I listen to DEMOCRACY NOW, on Pacifica radio, and the message there is clear. Bush is a Progressive. He wants us to fight for freedom, democracy and libery. Just because IRAQI s are not white or European does not mean that they do not deserve a life free from pain and torutre, are you a racist and an idiot ?
JFK and Bush are both Progressives. Are you ?

ARE you saying that JFK would have INVADED a country like Bush did? Are you saying JFK would have killed all those people trying to "give" them something that HE does not understand? That''s about the sickest thing I''ve ever heard. JFK stood his ground and blockaded Cuba... played a hand with a nerve Bush has never had to PREVENT sending our Troops to die. You are a disgusting little person for saying this but to even utter the words progressive in the same sentence as Bush is beyond belief!! You are not real smart are you?

Are do not know anything about histroy. Do you believe , for example, that the Communist party were a threat during the 1940s and 1950s in the USA ? Did they infiltrate our government and State Dept for example. Was there in internal plot to destroy Democrady in the US ? Yes or N0 ?
I only use this as an example of how little most liberals really know about the world, our history and the evil we face.

JFK knew. And our great President Bush knows. How about you ?

How many Liberals do you hate there Swastika Breath? Do you hate Jefferson and Madison, who Con''s didn''t just call Liberal but called them Radical Liberal''s? How about the Roosevelts? Teddy and Franklin? Both of them were Liberals. Then there''s Wilson and Truman, hate them as well? We already can read your hatred for Kennedy and your love for Joe McCarthy... you do know old Joe NEVER uncovered ONE, not ONE, Communist with all the rights he trampled on don''t you? You know fascism isn''t the answer sparky and hating your history isn''t either. Sieg Heil Y''all.

Keep worshiping at the "golden elephant" and the "golden donkey" and there will not be a nation left. We will become a third world nation if we continue on this path. Both partys are corrupt and NEITHER are looking out for the interest of the people of the US.Free trade agreements, amnesty for illegals, tax breaks for corporations to move out of the US, violations of civil libertys etc. it goes on and on.

An accurate account of Chriatianity as well as Ismam & Budahism is of utmost importance...

I agree with you there j-whitman. But, in that case, the Islamic fundamentalists really believe in that stuff. Loony-toon use the religious right to get elected, then followed through in the same vein and used it to exact revenge on the attempt on daddy''s life and to secure oil for his evil buddies, all under the guise of "God told me to" And if that is the case, does that not lower shrub to our enemies level? And American blood is spilt. And the public says stop but he is still holding the office. Scary shiit, man.

What has changed in the course of Iraq? Iraq is in worse shape now than it was last year and is breaking up into multiple communitys with multiple civil wars still raging. Al Queda has its presence and they have almost run the Yaziks out of Iraq. I see no improvements in Iraq or our position there.

It is interesting how ignorant so many people are: That you believe that Bush is not a pure Progressive in the mold of JFK, is to deny the basic facts of History. Just as JFK wanted to bring freedom and "liberty" ( as stated in his ing. adress ) and was ready to carry any burden , commit any forces , etc to do so, is just what Bush is doing ! Bush was a young man at that time and no doubt greatly influenced, as was Cond. Rice, and others. Once Mc Govern and other Communists pacificist took over, they purged the Democrats of that "wing" of the party who wanted stand up for freedom and follow the destiny of America JFK called for.
Too bad your college education was so narrow that you missed these and other historical facts.
Liberals, true Liberals know so little, because they avoid confontation with Evil forces, would rather talk about fat content in foods, or "global warming" (what a joke that is !) while they fly around in privated jets !

Liberals, true Liberals know so little, because they avoid confontation with Evil forces, would rather talk about fat content in foods, or "global warming" (what a joke that is !) while they fly around in privated jets !

the south can''t be depended upon to do the right thing for america.

J do you not know the Iraqis are dancing in the streets? Problem is they are dancing to avoid a bomb or the other Iraqis dancing with weapons aimed at them.Bush said they would be "dancing" and would be bringing "flowers" he just forget that the dancing was to avoid death and the "flowers" were to mourn death.

JFK''s inaugural address was, indeed, moving. Is that as far as you got in your study of JFK? It sounds as though you are still glamorizing his presidency, which was a short presidency. Whomever taught you the history of that era, was or is sadly lacking in factual history. When you say McGovern "purged" the party, you are forgetting that the Democratic party is not like the Republican ~ all of the same mind. The Democratic party always was and always has been a coalition of difference. It was then, more the working class party than it is now, but still it incorporates a variety of ideaological difference. Still, JFK would not like being compared to George Bush. Point of interest,JFK did have some true ideals, and his speeches were, in the main, written with his considerable input, unlike Bush.
