Romney's Hollow Victory

The New Republic:Straw Poll Winner Underperforms, While Huckabee Excels

(The New Republic)  This column was written by Noam Scheiber.

One of the main attractions at the annual Iowa State Fair, next to the 600-pound "butter cow" (a life-size heifer sculpted out of pure butter) and all manner of food impaled on a stick, is a man named Steve Deace. Deace is the host of "Deace in the Afternoon" — "the fastest three hours in all of local radio" — on a conservative Des Moines station called WHO. Last week, he and the other WHO announcers were broadcasting live from a glass-enclosed booth just inside the fairgrounds, putting them in close proximity to hordes of sun-burned Midwesterners, as well as a steady march of presidential wannabes.

When I met Deace the day before the GOP straw poll in nearby Ames, he was eager to unburden himself about one candidate in particular: Mitt Romney. Deace had been thrashing the former Massachusetts governor for several weeks — so much so that, a few days earlier, the Romney campaign had sent an emissary to try to calm him down. Judging from our conversation, the effort had been a total failure. Deace remained convinced that Romney was only pretending to be a conservative to win the nomination. He was especially peeved at Romney's recent jab at certain "holier-than-thou" critics who had questioned his pro-life credentials. "Now, if I'm a sellout, moderate, corporate Republican, I love language like that," Deace said. "Because I'm tired of hearing from the Steve Deaces of the world about the fact that I'm a sellout, corporate, moderate Republican."

Deace is a baby-faced man of about 35, with beady eyes and pasty white skin. He has the physique of a populist folk hero — he looks to be lugging around some 250 pounds — and the fans to back up that status. Several times during his Romney monologue, he was interrupted by starstruck well-wishers — a middle-aged couple introducing their daughter, a man who urged him to run for Congress. But now, as he moved in for the kill, even the groupies couldn't divert him. "You want to know who those holier-than-thou folks are, brother? Let me tell you who they are." As he spoke, he rocked back and forth so violently I felt myself getting seasick. "Those are the folks at Priests for Life and Operation Rescue and the Right to Life Committee. ... They fought the good fight for years while Mitt was sowing his conservative wild oats somewhere in the philosophical-ethereal realm."

The news accounts trumpeting Romney's win on Saturday didn't offer much hope to people like Deace. But just beneath the headlines lay an encouraging development: Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, a bona fide conservative, had finished a respectable second. His showing was all the more impressive given that the Huckabee campaign had few organizational resources, not only compared with the Romney juggernaut, but even alongside second-tier rivals like Kansas Senator Sam Brownback and Colorado Representative Tom Tancredo. Strong organization, especially a get-out-the-vote effort, confers huge advantages in the Ames poll, to which voters must trek from all corners of the state. And yet, somehow, the Arkansan excelled nonetheless. Who knows? Maybe Deace and his fellow Romney-bashers will have a viable conservative to support after all.

There's no question that Romney earned the good press he received after Ames. In winning nearly 32 percent of the votes cast, Romney firmly established himself as the man to beat when Iowa holds the country's first nominating contest, currently slated for next January. Moreover, with both Rudy Giuliani and John McCain skipping the straw poll, Romney won himself something else nearly as important: goodwill from the local Republican officials who value loyalty in a would-be nominee.

But Romney himself looked sober. Several strands of hair had broken free from the right side of his head, something I hadn''t previously thought possible, and he was unusually flushed. As Steve Deace might say, we''re not in the "philosophical-ethereal realm" anymore. - The New Republic.

Ever notice how America''s corrupt liberal wolfpack press likes to insert their "own" comments and unique "adjectives" into their bias liberal stories. The New Republic like the rest of America''s corrupt liberal wolfpack press is scare to death of Mitt Romney. They use 1930''s style German propaganda to create negative sterotypes of folks "they" deem a threat to their corrupt ways.

Just another day and another story that is intended to "prop" up their close pals the Democrats by "tearing" down the GOP.

Looks like The New Republic is involved AGAIN will more stories from Iraq that appear to be "False". The problem is The New Republic doesn''t want to talk about this issue. Why not? And where is the transparancy in America''s corrupt liberal wolfpack press?

Now for some of the story:

"When Pajamas Media heard the authenticity questions surrounding the %u201CBaghdad Diarist%u201D articles by Scott Thomas Beauchamp in The New Republic, we asked our Washington Editor Richard Miniter to look into how the respected opinion magazine could once again be the locus of such a scandal.

Miniter spoke with several people involved in the extraordinary story, including the whistle-blower and a German woman who was Beauchamp%u2019s fiancie until just before he married, of all people, Miniter discovered, a fact-checker at The New Republic. That fiancie said of her former boyfriend, the soldier/reporter: %u201CHe hates the army. The only reason he joined was because he wanted to have more experience to write about.%u201D

Read on for that and other explanations of how The New Republic got suckered."

......Was it because they don''t care about the truth? Is it because they want to work against America''s efforts in Iraq?...........you decide.

If it wasn''t for the so called liberal press and Democrats, nothing that has gone right for the the nation in the Last 6.5 years would not have even happened. From the 9-11 Commission to the Iraq Study Group to the Defeat of the Privatization of Social Security even to the so called Surge which should have happened years ago. The Republican Neo Cons are the party of wait and see and complete inaction until forced to look at issues. At which time they finally take credit for anything that was done, albeit only after the voice of the people ie (your so called liberal press) and the Democrats exposed their flawed policies and vitriol and forced them to change positions.

Proof- From Rasmussen Reports, the American people have spoken and this is what they agree on:

"Sunday, July 22, 2007

In the final poll of a series measuring perceptions of media bias, the Associated Press, local television stations, MSNBC, and CNBC are all perceived as tilting to the left when reporting the news.

Earlier releases showed that Americans tend to believe the major broadcast networks (CBS,NBC,ABC) CNN, and NPR have a liberal bias. Fox News is seen as having a bias in the other direction. In print, the New York Times, Washington Post, and local newspapers were also seen as having a liberal bias."

.....SO......when? is our liberal MSM wolfpack gong to implement "affirmative action" programs that include NOT EXCLUDE "moderates" and "conservative".

And we wonder why our corrupt liberal MSM wolfpack press hasn''t had "big stories" reporting these opinions from the American public.

Gee.........I wonder why.

JohnStorm and ainttaken, your talk is "cheap" where''s your proof? Americans are tried of the liberal propaganda coming from our news/political organziations. Read on again:

CBS (Crush Bush Station), We know you%u2019re very busy with your liberal %u201Cpropaganda blitzkrieg%u201D against the GOP in full support of your hero Hillary Rotten Clinton. You can%u2019t kid your way through this perception of basis. Americans know that you%u2019re pack full liberal DEM reporters and editors. Now for some facts:
Bad news is always bigger news than good news. But a study by the Business and Media Institute says when it comes to the economy, broadcast network news stories are overwhelmingly and intentionally negative.
The year-long study of evening news programs revealed more than twice as many negative economic stories as positive %u2014 and the negative stories were in full -length reports %u2014 while the positive were in shorter forms. The study says the "CBS Evening News" went negative on the economy in 80 percent of its reports %u2014 the highest percentage among the three networks.
And the brilliant 2003 study "A Measure of Media Bias" by Tim Groseclose and Jeff Milyo scientifically documented that the national media slants your news left, with CBS and the New York Times leading the parade.
It time for CBS and the other liberal MSM to implement %u201Caffirmative action%u201D plans to ensure that your reporters come also from moderate and conservative political backgrounds.

Are we so incapable of using logic to make our own opinions on subjects that we must constantly harp on which media outlet is biased in which direction? It isn''t a perfect world, and I doubt if any journalist or media outlet has been perfectly balanced enough to please all of the people all of the time.

Of course, there is only one media outlet that claims to be fair, balanced, and unbiased, and that it Fox, the most blatantly biased news organization in history. Fox is to news what Jerry Springer is to family counseling.

Boy, conservatives really hate it when you grab them by the neck and stick their face down into the TRUTH. They don''t wnat to know what their government is doing - they trust their Republican politicians. They don''t want to be bothered with who is doing what at who''s bidding or who is on who''s payroll. They just want red white and blue painted on everything and crosses everywhere you look. Well go to the cemetery, they''re full of crosses from our dead soldiers, dying for the oil companies. Lies, lies lies, that''s all you get from Republicans. It''s too hard to remember the details. Better to believe in God than in the periodic table. Republicans are pathetic, like cromagnons living among us. Why pray after the mine caves in - where was God when He could have prevented the cave in ? Meanwhile the coal barons pay the politicians to relieve them of inspections and safety requirements. Better wake up, people.

As Ronald Reagan would say%u2026%u2026.. %u201CWell %u2026%u2026%u2026 there you go again %u2026%u2026%u201D Looks like our liberal MSM wolfpack has some explaining to do%u2026%u2026.. now for the facts:

The %u201CCenter for Media and Public Affairs%u201D did an accounting of the network newscasts from September 5 thru October 22 and found an overwhelming liberal bias.
On the "Big Three%u201D" network newscasts, the audit showed a clear jihad against the Republican Party. Only 12 percent of election stories that aired on NBC, ABC, or CBS could be regarded as remotely "favorable" to Republicans.
"Democrats basked in glory." The study showed that 77 percent of news accounts in the six-week period offered favorable evaluations of Democratic candidates and lawmakers.
77% to 12% isn%u2019t what most Americans would say was %u201Cfair-n-balanced%u201D. Does anyone one out there think that any of the networks engaged in this propaganda will carrying this story?............. sad and shameful that Americans can%u2019t trust the news anymore%u2026%u2026%u2026%u2026..

Go to Fox News then.. Have you ever been to a predominantly Republican City and looked at their newspapers.. My God the Arizona Republican and San Diego Union Tribune look like Picture Books. The stories are so mundane and un-insightful it is scary. Thinking people require in depth reporting. With this depth, unfortunately for NeoCons, comes exposure of the lies and attempts to brainwash... Most of your type can''t even muster up the attention span to read a complete story especially one that criticizes your philosophical leanings. A story in and of itself is news and as such is required to analyze all aspects and not just tow the Administrations agenda. This is why Freedom of the Press is so important... Your President and His Bully Pulpit should be able to counter any dissenting view points since they are in power. However they demonstrate a gross disregard for the truth and instead love secrecy and back door deals, ala wiretapping without the courts approval. Stop attacking the press and grow up. Intelligent adults can discern for themselves what the truth is. Instead stand up for your President and tell us why he has been so good for this Country and this Planet. The press is doing their job... btw I do read Fox News, too bad they do not allow us to post on their website. cont.

And one more observation isn''t Fox the network that brought us some of the most ground breaking morally corrupt programming back in the late 80''s when they created the Network. All to gain market share from the traditional 3 networks. I.e. Married with Children, Beverly Hills 90210, Melrose Place hmm.. How do they reconcile with their Conservative slant which is a hallmark of their News Department. Sounds pretty Hypocrital to me.. But Hypocrisy and the Republican NeoCons go hand in hand.. Oooh be scared of the big Media Monster... Be very scared....

Experiance is paramount at a time when the primiary issue is saving the lives of Americans against terrorism. This war is about the life and death of our country, not castles in the air. Obama has very little experiance yet much hope., which is nice if there was no war. Clinton has failed miserably with the very issues she continues to promote, and having a CLINTON back in the White House is a HUGE error in judgement. The next president needs to have experiance running a corporation, having professional morality, know the differance between right and wrong, and be credible. It is more than intelligence, more than ability, it is who would you want to be alone with against a terrorist attack? I say Guiliani not Romney.

Who''s gonna protect you from Gun Violence in America or an Automobile Accident for that matter. If and when another terrorist attack takes place you can be assured that either party will react with fierce force. Because we are all American and proud of it. The Republicans do not own that intrinisic value which is so American. Domocrats are just as responsible and effective when it comes to protecting and using force if applicable as any Republican. We need someone who cares about the working class and does not use fear to scare us into voting for them. Wake up America.. How many Registered voters in Manhattan voted for Bush in 2004. I dare say it was less then 30% and that from millions of ppl who experienced the terrorist attacks first hand. Franklin Roosevelt (a Democrat) said it best. "All We have to Fear is Fear Itself" Because fear is the most powerful of all emotions. (And I thought the republicans were not emotional like the lefties ha ha)

Sieg Heil the Terrorists are gonna get us!

More bad news for the 110th Do Nothing Democrat Congress. Don''''t look for CBS (Clinton Broadcasting Station) to report on these polls results...............as usual:

"August 21, 2007
Congress Approval Rating Matches Historical Low
Just 18% approve of job Congress is doing

by Jeffrey M. Jones

GALLUP NEWS SERVICE

PRINCETON, NJ -- A new Gallup Poll finds Congress'''' approval rating the lowest it has been since Gallup first tracked public opinion of Congress with this measure in 1974. Just 18% of Americans approve of the job Congress is doing, while 76% disapprove, according to the August 13-16, 2007, Gallup Poll.

That 18% job approval rating matches the low recorded in March 1992, when a check-bouncing scandal was one of several scandals besetting Congress, leading many states to pass term limits measures for U.S. representatives (which the Supreme Court later declared unconstitutional). Congress had a similarly low 19% approval rating during the energy crisis in the summer of 1979."

Guiliani''s experience with terrorism consists of going to Ground Zero and staring at the rubble; making promises to the firefighters then renegging on those promises; and billing himself as "The Hero of 9/11."

The fact that he was in the same place at the same time as the firefighters who were heroes does not make him a hero.

Of course, the neocons thought Bush Junior was in the military too, so they''ll believe anything Rush Limbaugh and Fox News tells them.

There is a very good reason Guiliani did not run against Hillary Clinton for the New York Senate seat in 2002-- he knew he would get the pooh kicked out of him!

Now, having flip-flopped so many times trying to pretend he''s a conservative right-winger, poor Rudy will really get munched if he wins the nomination!

We can not have any elected officials let alone one in the WH that does not accept science. Even the Pope who usually agrees with these weird people said that it is absurd to believe that evolution and creationism can not both be embraced. Hopefully, Catholic woman will listen to their fearless leader and dump this Christian right crowd this time around.

Romney is much more capable and viable in the general election.

Good thing Mitt has money to spend and it''s the only way to get public awareness of him. The rest of the presidential candidates fear him. Why? Because once the country knows him, most people will believe in him. He''s got the whole package others don''t have. All they do is pick up dirt to throw at him, but, sadly, their own hands are now dirty too.

Mitt is the most viable moderate conservative in the Presidential race and the best qualified to bring new leadership with his vision for America''s future. As Michael Reagan has reminded everyone, his beloved father, The Gipper; when Governor of California signed a major pro-abortion piece of legislation before he became our party''s greatest conservative and pro-life President. So good people do evolve in their positions on social issues. Gov. Romney has an impressive resume to showcase. When elected governor in 2002 he assumed a monstrous 3 billion dollar deficit and put the state od Massachusetts back in the black without raising taxes. His success in public office mirrors his record in the private sector at Bain Capitol where he reorganized and made household names of companies such as Domino''s Pizza and Staples. He also bailed out the U.S. Olympics in Salt Lake City in 2002.Candidate Romney graduated valedictorian in undergrad; then pursued a double degree at Harvard (M.B.A. and law) graduating in the top 5% of his class while doing so. Gov. Romney''s record not only reflects his fiscal expertise; but he''s also pro-life. As governor, Romney vetoed a bill which would have funded human cloning and the destruction of human embryos. A strong family man, Romney has been married for 38 years to his wife Ann. Romney has also taken a tough stance on terrorism, and he''s the only top tier presidential candidate who strongly opposed the flawed Senate immigration bill.

Every candidate is attacked. For Romney, it''s his religion, his too-perfect family, or the fact that he changed his mind. But when you get past all that, he really seems to have the strongest resume. I was leaning to supporting Fred until I really studied Romney''s credentials. I wouldn''t vote for someone just because he looks presidential. But you can''t accomplish the kinds of things he''s done without legitimate skills. He knows how to involve the right people to solve very difficult problems, and those are the kind of problems this world has. I like Fred''s ability to memorize a script, and he delivers his lines with authority, but I doubt those skills will fix the complex problems we face today. With Romney, I think we''ve got someone who can actually change things in a good way. He understands economics and business, and we seriously need someone who does. He''s a communicator. He has managed very large organizations, and in every case left them in far better shape. Not many people have that kind of talent. No other candidate in either party is really on his level. Rudy comes closest, only because of 9/11. Take 9/11 away, and Rudy''s resume is much thinner.

If Romney really wanted to be president, he would dump the (R) after his name, Bush has guaranteed that the letter in question has become a near insurmountable handicap.

.........omega39, let''s hope Americans vote for the candidate that is "best" qualified to lead this nation forward. Mitt doesn''t have to "talk" about what he''ll do, one only has to look at the long list of accomplishments to know that he can get great results.
The current problem in America "is" that folks look for the "D" or "R" after the candiates name and it''s not serving America or its people very well right now.

Mike Huckabee doesn''t believe in evolution and Mutt Romney believes that a White Salamander told Joe Smith to dig a hole and find gold tablets upon which the new cult of mormonism could be founded.

Nice to see that the Republishit Party has gone beyond the pale when it comes to topping the ********* candidates of old - like Ronnie Ragoon, the Great Drooler, who ruined our nation and handed its governance to the televangelists of the day - Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson and the "Moral Majhority."

How can there still be people who unashamedly call themselves members of the Republiturd Party ? Have you people no SHAME for what your "party of Lincoln" has done to our nation''s reputation around the globe ?

Fritter away your dollars on your ''god-fearing'' candidates, and continue to worship BOTH your gods.....your tiny organs and your wallets.
