(AP)  An Australian woman was killed by a pet camel given to her as a 60th birthday present after the animal apparently tried to have sex, police said Sunday.

The woman, whose name was not released, was killed Saturday at her family's sheep and cattle ranch near Mitchell, 350 miles west of the Queensland state capital Brisbane, state police Detective Senior Constable Craig Gregory said.

The 10-month-old male camel — weighing about 330 pounds — knocked the woman to the ground, lay on top of her, then exhibited what police suspect was mating behavior, Gregory said.

"I'd say it's probably been playing, or it may be even a sexual sort of thing," Gregory said, adding the camel almost suffocated the family's pet goat by straddling it on several occasions.

Camel expert Chris Hill said he had no doubt the camel's behavior was sexual.

Hill, who has offered camel rides to tourists for 20 years, said young camels are not aggressive, but can be dangerous if treated as pets without discipline.

The fate of the camel was not known.

The woman was given the camel in March as a birthday present from her husband and daughter. "She had a love of exotic pets," Gregory said.

Why would you buy a camel for a 60-year-old woman as a birthday present?

People should not be getting exotic animals. Leave them alone. I don''t give two ****** for the people that made the poor decision to get it. My concern is what is going to happen to this poor animal now?

People that do these kinds of things should go to prison.

It''s a sad story but why do people want to try to tame exotic pets? Does purchasing a Camel come with training manual and do''s and don''ts?

They should bring that camel to America for all the beastly American hoz who ''enjoy'' mating with their dogs, other animals, and anything that looks like a dik!

On second thought, scratch that idea; because they may want to lynch Michael Vick even more should the camel proved less capable than their canine se.ex partners.

I can''t imagine how the woman felt, and how did this kill her? Suffocation? How devastating for the family!

The camel should be placed in a zoo, it was only doing what it thought was right. I had a Saint Bernard try this when I was ten years old, I had already physically matured and he could smell a scent he took as only a male would. We just laughed it off, no harm done.

This also shows men are animals and will mount anything they think is offering it to them. Whoever wrote about Vick is right, put him in a cage with the camel, except why should the camel be punished.

"It''''s a sad story but why do people want to try to tame exotic pets? "

A camel is not an exotic pet, camels have been used for hundreds of years overseas the way we use HORSES here- as work animals. The problem was some idiot gives a HUGE strong animal to a frail 60 year old woman, this is like giving a ST Bernard to a woman living in a nursing home.

"had a Saint Bernard try this when I was ten years old, I had already physically matured and he could smell a scent he took as only a male would.

Now that I''ve stopped laughing at this, let me explain canine behavior: this had nothing to do with your being physically mature at age 10. Your dog was exhibiting dominant behavior--trying to see if he could ''pull rank'' on you and thus be higher than you in his ''pack''--your family. All puppies, even females, do this amongst themselves when they''re very young, as play and to determine who orders who around.

When pups leave the litter and go to families, it is common for them to accept adults as ''alpha'' and then to test the kids to see where they fit in the pecking order. The younger the child, the higher the pitch of the voice, the more likely the dog is to try and dominate them, seeing them as ''littermates'', and this is how males do that.

The appropriate response is a stern and deep-voiced reprimand accompanied by a physical rebuff. There should never be a question that a dog, no matter how much he is loved and cared for, is not an alpha but an omega--that''s to say he comes AFTER even the youngest of his pack''.

Don''t try this with a camel at home, folks :)

How to know if your camel thinks you''re hot:

1. Offers you a drink in an open glass;
2. Asks if you are really happily married;
3. Struts around without a shirt;
4. Asks if you want to see his "other" hump;
5. Asks if you''d like to smoke a camel;
6. Starts telling you about the time it was sooo hot in the desert everyone had to take off ALL their clothes

Also if you have a male dog and he''s not fixed, no matter how much attention and care you give him he will challenge you from time to time. The best way to deal with this is to lay your throat across the back of his neck and to growl softly. Believe it or not it works every time because it re-establishes you above him in the pack pecking order. ALWAYS remember that to your dogs, your entire family is a pack.

kkpp123456, I seriously doubt the woman''s family in AUSTRALIA reads CBS news in America.

The woman did nothing, it was the idiot who gave a 60 year old woman a 300+# animal as a pet who is responsible.

The expert says it all on the camel''s intent;

"Camel expert Chris Hill said he had no doubt the camel''s behavior was s3xual."

Hey nggr- either read the wikipedia page I posted and learn something about inter-species relations, or shut up about what you know nothing about.

Excuse me I am from Mitchell, Queensland Australia where it happened so people from here do read CBS news. As for people that bought the animal are responsible it was actually her family members that bought the animal and it wasn''t 300+ when they gave it to her it was actually a baby. So you really all wanna stop running your mouths without knowing all the facts...

Listen dude, you CLAIM you are from Australia, but you have no proof here to back it up. As far as the 300# goes, DUH, it was a baby when they GAVE the camel to her, but they still GAVE her a 300 pound animal (now at age 10 months) that will get much heavier as he grows further.
They may have gave her a 25# animal initially but he is over 300# NOW and she''s dead.

"Let ME Stop laughing tmonta1, as a life-long practicing zoophile since pre-puberty I can state without reservation or hesitation that this was NOT some BS dominance display, it''''s well known in my circles that male dogs are very interested in the smells of women''''s genitals. According to you I guess his mounting the sofa and humping it with an erec-tion is a dominance display to the SOFA!"

Newster,

Canines can have odd sexual impulses but it is FAR MORE FREQUENT for their attempts at ''humping'' humans to signify trying to establish dominance. Young male dogs have frequent erections and oddly-directed impulses but this generally diminishes with maturity and purely sexual impulses are directed towards more appropriate ''partners''--assuming they''re around.

Cases of dogs actually trying to have intercourse with humans for sexual pleasure are NOWHERE NEAR AS FREQUENT as the dominance issue.

I have no doubt however, that a few twisted humans can succeed in redirecting a dog''s natural instincts and conditioning his behavior so that they are satisfied in their own twisted needs. Don''t ever give him access to other dogs, stimulate and deprive him repeatedly, then only give him access to what you want him to have. There are some truly sick puppies out there, and I''m not referring to the canines.

Sorry Newster. While I%u2019m sure you''re totally into what you do, I don''t believe your experience at age 10 was your ''canine calling'' for this type of behavior--at least not from the dog''s view.

tmonta1, you still don''t know what you are talking about on this issue, you CAN''T know what you are talking about, because you have not seen it in person. The p0rn you see on-line is faked but gives a pretty good idea. Most dogs DONT breed, most are neutered, so satisfying their basic needs for s3x is no different than petting, grooming, treats.
It''s not just young males but males of ALL ages, they do have all the same parts men do.
Give me 2 minutes with any male dog at random and you''ll see how off-base you are, and how the dog responds positively- and wants more of the same.
Many, especially older males don''t even need much encouragement at all to go at it.

Perfect example of why people should not have "exotic" animals as pets.

Camel mating behavior is very entertaining. The male chases the female who gives a good run. Then she slows down - but doesn''t come to a full stop - and urinates. This is to let the male know to keep trying and he will have success. Then they run some more. Then she stops and kneels to the ground...and nature takes over.

If the woman was running away from the camel, it is quite natural that he thought he was going to get lucky.

Good grief.... I need to go scrub my eyes and brain with bleach after reading most of the posts on here. I never thought I would say something like this, but I sincelerely hope something horrid happens to some of you, so that the world can make such horrible comments about you and your own families. In alot of places, camels are used as work animals, same as horse and oxen, mules, there among the pack working class. Have been living among humans for centuries. Just goes to show, that animals are, and always will be unpredictable beings, and should be treated as such. AS for one person here.. I hope one bites a certain part of your body off, along with what ever part of your brain that is suffering sickness,so no children happen across what you have put up.

kkpp

And how many of them are 60 year old frail women?
This is like giving an 8 year old a Cyldesdale stallion for her birthday, you don''t give pets to ANYONE unless they ask for one! this is the problem around xmas time with puppies and kittens, people will amazingly do stupid things like give a St Bernard puppy to a 70 year old woman who lives in a small apartment on the 3rd floor, or a Clydesdale stallion to an 8 year old kid whose last pet was a kitten but she wanted a real horse after playing with ''my little pony''

You don''t people living animals they my not want or are ill equipped to deal with, and you certainly don''t buy inappropriate pets for other people. You wouldn''t buy your neighbor lady a set of underwear and bras for xmas, why would you buy her a PET she may not even want or may not be able to handle?

If not aided, courting and mating can be very violent. If the male selects a female and she is not willing to go down quietly when he approaches her, he will bite at her neck and eventually roughly force her to the ground. There the female utters her guttural protest, while the male first straddles her and then gently slides down until he is squatting on his back legs (Photo 6). Copulation lasts for about 15 minutes. This is accompanied by much gurgling and grunting. The male pushes forward continuously with many pelvic thrusts. The male gives about 7 ml of *** with an average of 615 million sperm per mm (Chen and Yuang, 1979).

The male is normally docile and easily controlled, however, in the rutting season he can become so aggressive that he is dangerous and cannot be handled. He is extremely restless. He blows a balloon-like flap out of the side of his mouth which is called a palatal flap (Charnot, 1963; Yagil and Etzion, 1981) (Photo 5). I
