New York Reacts To Dirty Bomb Threat

By
James M Klatell
(CBS)  Travel in and around Manhattan was brought to a near crawl Saturday as police were prompted by the threat of a radiological weapon to step up security measures.

New York police say the threat of a dirty bomb was unsubstantiated, but CBS News correspondent Randall Pinkston reports, the response was emphatic.

No one got a pass: At check points along major traffic routes, officers with radiological sensors scanned cars and mail trucks, city buses – any vehicle that could transport dangerous cargo.

There was also aerial surveillance, plus extra sensors on police patrol boats in the city's rivers and harbor.

First word of the threat came from an Israeli-based Web site quoting an alleged American member of al Qaeda predicting attacks in New York, Miami and Los Angeles.

Terrorism experts say it may be a hoax, but, for America's enemies, it accomplishes a goal.

"It's a cheap way to disrupt us, life is going to be more difficult for residents of New York City today," said CBS News terrorism analyst Randy Larsen. "Traffic will be more difficult. It's something for al Qaeda to do, even if they have no capability whatsoever."

Throughout the summer, officials say there's been heightened chatter from intelligence sources of possible threats. Just last month, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said he has a 'gut' feeling that al Qaeda is about to strike.

In July, CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric asked Chertoff if there was any intelligence that al Qaeda was ready to attack at a moment's notice.

"No specific evidence that we're poised on the brink of an attack," Chertoff responded, "but a recognition – as you see from time to time when cases become public – that there are people in the country who at a minimum sympathizers, if not more, and who we have to keep a very close eye on."

A dirty bomb, if one were to be set off, might not kill many people, but it would damage the nation's sense of security.

"Remember it's not a weapon of mass destruction, its a weapon of disruption," Larsen said.

Officials in Miami and Los Angeles made no adjustments to their normal security arrangements. By late today, New York City had taken down check points, but officials insist they will not lower their vigilance.

Nearly 6 years have passed since 9-11 and New York still lacks a state-of-the-art duct tape and plastic shield to help ward off dirty bomb attacks.

There is a terrorist group that has already killed tens of thousands of Americans--and its still on the loose! Its called Merck Pharmaceutical--one of its primary weapons is Vioxx. Maybe Homeland Security can go find and annoy them.

Re: "Why have few NYorkers been informed of state of the art duckncover techniques??"

Good point. How does Cheney really know if his new mini-nukes even work, unless he gets a chance to try one out?

Re: "We need to know that 110% protection, the best our tax money can buy"

What tax money are you referring to? We are almost $9 trillion in debt as a country, not counting personal debt, and we have a staggering bill due from the self-defeating "War on Terror", that has yet to be paid.

China very nearly owns our collective arses, and our economy appears to be heading towards a nasty and painful contraction. Our country is nearly routed. I don't know how we could possibly afford what you are proposing, and it sounds a bit like you are welcoming a police state.

In conclusion:

I would surely hope that NYC security would be contiguous despite rogue, or unproven threats.

The NYPD TRULY HAS to be america's most knowledgeable and able ~ with highly competent diversity in technical awareness for first response and threat. AND, by measure of the US executive branchs' pattern of virtual neglect of specific funding for extra NYC defenses... the NYPD is expected to be miracle-inductive.

I am concerened that there are few stories of heightened Federal defenses of NYC. Why is the NYPD always rumored to be working alone? Why have few NYorkers been informed of state of the art duckncover techniques?? The list, really, is frightfully long.

WE NEED 24/7 TECHNICAL FEDERAL PRESENCE IN NYC: Our army corps of engineers shuld be employed to
truly create a 24/7 FIRST DEFENSE against radiological/germicidal attacks launched from the street, ship, port, or subway.

We need to know that 110% protection, the best our tax money can buy, plus, the best the NYPD and FED can offer in terms of humanpower protection and threat assumption are in place ALWAYS... 24/7.

Let this be a providential reminder that NEW YORK CITY should be protected first and foremost by the Fed. We are TRULY America's ground zero, and should have our defense funded DEMONSTRATIVELY that way...

forgive me for filibustering here, but has anyone got a real comment here in response to the lesson of this 2 week threat, hoax or no? can this be a feint to gauge preparedness and knowhow? or what?

discuss... lessons?

1. NYC and DC and perhaps LA are US ground zero: their ports should be a world-reknowned scientific model of DB and WMD preparedness and response?

2. We need to focus our political response on bangforthebuck... 30 cents on every dollar for WHAT?

3. ALQ wants to *** us financially first?

The poetry is nice, the partianship dealable, of not ridiculously ignorant, but where's the good ol american knowhow consensus lie here? neocon or lib? religion? Never mind bushit, the prez with a small p... the dems will clean up the financial and military mess, as we always do...

what have we learned here?

ERRATICA SUM?

" am in such a state of fear or terror I dirtied my pants with explosive diarrhea a Dirty Bomb a Dirty Poo Bomb :)
A Dirty Bomb Threat or explosive diarrhea attacks can happen very suddenly :)"

my vote is for YOU to be the FIRST one who watches the "Dirty poo bomb" device made of medical and warehouse wastes explode on the subway platform in front of you!

Probably easy to say for you from minnesota or oregon, far from the 1st battleground of domestic terrorism...

Come with me and the other 1 million new yorkers for ONE MONDAY MORNING on the train... and we'll wait those anxious miuntes and speak in person about terrorism and real bankforthebuck (30 cents on every dollar ENFORCED) "HOMELAND SECURITY" got in in ya?

I think NOT.

you all might want to stop watching internet video and TV and read this before you comment irresponsibly...

Fed of American Scientist testimony about dirty bombs, circa 2005:

http://www.fas.org/faspir/2002/v55n2/dirtybomb.htm

Believe me, if it is shipped here, it's coming through NYC, and we are the first target.

why hasn't rove used that to galvanize public support behind the suspicious "Homeland Security" project? Why do we not regard NYC as the true ground zero and first defense of the "homeland"?????

idiocy, or intrigue???

I'd say, ignorant idiocy, but I am an intellectuall elitist from a blue state who lost their best friend in the WTC...

go figure!

Re: "1. thanks feelfree for the tip on the movie, but you "preach to the choir" about religion and politics here."

Apparantly not, because there's still some right wingers here who post like stinkingrick and the other bibull thumpers.

Hey ms PHD- shutupyouface! you don't know what you are talking about in regards to legally blind, I've worked with legally blind as well as totally blind on-line and in person before and dealt with their text to speech and speech to text software problems, so I know how it is.

I'd much rather read Michelle's posts than your KRAP, she comes off well educated, as well as educated in the school of hard knocks while you come off as a TROLL
